Thursday 21.1.2010 day 99 Cambrils fishing village/ roman Quarry Today we are having tapas and drinking sangria on the water front promanade at this ‘traditional Spanish fishing village’ (well maybe it was 30 years ago!) on a warm sunny day. Very pleasant - what a hard life. We also decided to checkout the 2200 year old Roman Quarry where the Romans (what did they ever do for us?) dug out the stone for the old city of Tarragona. Unlike many other ancient sites in Spain, this one was sign posted like an English Neolithic site (ie nothing helpful). After 500 metres we got to the aqua duct which was under scaffolding and being repaired, and blocking the path to the Roman quarry. Only then did the sign say ‘Closed for repairs 2009 to 2011, sorry for ... read more

Tuesday 19.1.210 day 97 Tarragona We went back to Tarragona again and got a Tarragona pass that got us into a lot of the Roman sites for free it was 10€ each but was not worth it the main site I wanted to see was the Roman Circus it was fantastic and very well preserved it cost 3€ to see that and the other sites we got in was the wall but there was a lot of wall you could see without paying for it. The pass also got us in to the Amphitheatre that we had seen from out site the day before and we did not see any more by going inside so it is not worth paying to go into that. We also got to go in to a few houses which ... read more

Monday 18.1.210 day 96 Cambrils Today we decided to go to what we had been told by our resort was a little fishing village close to our hotel. We drove though the village but it seemed more like a tourist destination about 10% of the ships in the harbor where fishing boats the others where luxury sports boats and game fishing boats. The place was full of 4 and 3 star hotels and the beach front was full of upmarket restaurants with seating all along the beach front. We drove along the beach front and too our surprise came across out town it turned out that the two towns are next to one another. We then keep going and drove by the coast to Tarragona where we had a look around it coast. Between our town ... read more

Saturday 16.1.210 day 94 Spain - Salou Cosra Daurada We had a good sleep in and then headed to the Roman part of Tarragona. There was settlement in the region by the 5th century BC, the Romans up a military base in 218 BC and over the next 200 years the entire Iberian Peninsula was conquered from this base. In the 2nd century BC a great wall was built around the city. The wall was original 3,500 meters today 1,100 meters remains and we got to see a lot of this it still forms part of buildings that are in use today including the coffee shop that we had coffee at in the local forum. It was the hub of the daily life in Roman times and still is today. While we where there was a ... read more

Thursday 14.1.210 day 91 Andorra We drove to Andorra today. Andorra is one of the smallest country in the world, 464 sq km 2 ½ times smaller than Paris. It has the best skiing in the Pyrenees the lifts can get 95,000 people up to the ski fields an hour, the population of the country is 76,900. It has great hiking and motorcycle riding in summer. There are no taxes in Andorra so petrol food and alcohol are very cheap. There is more than 1 shop per 40 residents in Andorra we saw about 30 motorcycle shops in about 5 km of one another. There are police on almost every pedestrians crossing directing traffic helping people across the road including people in wheelchairs and giving directions to tourists.
