2019 / New Adventure
We are creating this blog for family and friends to once again travel “with us” as we explore the beauty of both Scotland and Ireland. As we sat here trying to come up with a somewhat unique title - and we did have some fun ones - we settled on “Day Trippin’ Thru Scotland and Ireland”. (Maybe not too unique, but compared to a few of Jim’s suggestions, this will work). Oh, and this trip Jim won’t be behind the wheel ... & believe me he’s not used to this!! Looking forward to a great time & hope you all enjoy our trip!

We are hoping this blog will allow us to share our adventures and pictures with family and friends as we travel in our motorhome from Wisconsin to Alaska and then back home.

Our final day of touring Scotland. It’s been great, the weather held out the majority of the time .. even had some sun at times. There were only a few times that a light rain fell during our stops. I consider that to be extremely lucky for us. We included a city tour this morning, as well as a tour of the Edinburgh Castle. Sometimes it’s just easier to share some pictures than to try describing the uniqueness & character of this entire city. Our late afternoon included a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia, which interestingly has a mall attached to it. Dinner at a small Scottish Pub finished off our week. It was a fun & very interesting week. The architecture throughout the country was awesome. We had members of our tour group from ... read more

Guess I’m falling a bit behind on my posts. It’s been a great yet extremely busy week. We started this day with a stop at the Scone Palace and a tour of the Murray family home. After that, it was on to St Andrews, the Home of Golf. This was one stop that we were both looking forward to. Our stop was at the Old Course, which was also host to the Alfred Dunhill Championship. What a beautiful place!! After time roaming around & trip to the gift shop, we were given the opportunity to hit balls. Jim & many other golfers in our group loved this!! Our evening was spent at a dinner theater which included Scottish dancers, a bagpipe, & Scottish stories & songs. How fun!! ... read more

I can’t believe we are into Day #4 of our adventures already. This morning we traveled through the Culloden Battleground, and then on to the small village of Tomintoul, the highest village in the Scottish Highlands. Here I finally found my first connections from my family name. I’ve looked at all gift shops that carry ancestry information of the more basic family Scottish names, but have found nothing close to my McPhail name. Our ancestry says there were seven McPhail brothers that came together to the US many years ago from the Scottish Highlands. Well ... while walking past a local whiskey store, I noticed their window display featured Gordon & MacPhail whiskey. This is distilled by a local company, and we found a very nice & rather expensive collection of whiskey. Ha, imagine that, the ... read more

We spent a lot of time traveling today, making for a long day, but one full of spectacular scenery. We made a fairly short stop in Fort William before moving on to Glenfinnan and taking a few pictures of the viaduct used during the filming of Harry Potter movies. Our next stop was the ferry ride to the Isle of Skye, which is the largest island of the inner Hebrides and quite famous for its’ beautiful landscapes. We also stopped for a few pictures of the bridge and a small area made famous by “Saucy Mary” . From there we crossed the Skye Bridge back to the mainland and one more stop near the Eilean Donan Castle (the remains from feuds between the Campbell's and the McDonald’s.) Our evening was spent in an interesting older hotel ... read more

Most of today was spent on and off the tour bus. After a drive through city tour of Glasgow and it’s beautiful Georgian architecture, we were off for a cruise on Loch Lomand. Overcast skies kept many clouds down over the hills, but I did get a few pictures. Very limited to just a few mallard ducks and several swans. Plenty of small cottages lined the walkways to and from the dock ... even an old phone booth that Jim checked out long enough for a photo for the grandkids. Remember those days before the newer technology & cellphones? From the small cruise we worked our way to the Glengoyne Distillery for a sample & a guided tour on how it’s made. Overall, quite similar to the process on the tv series “Moonshiners” ... except this ... read more

We arrived in Glasgow, Scotland early Sunday morning. We are currently six hours ahead of our family and friends back home. It seems like we lost all of Saturday night while in the air. Of course our room was not ready upon arrival, so off we went to explore a bit of Glasgow. It’s a beautiful older looking city & is the largest city in Scotland. We met the other members of our group over a drink and dinner. There will be 42 of us together this week. ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Prince George August 30th 2015

Our final two nights were scheduled to be in Prince George, British Columbia. We got in about mid-afternoon yesterday. Jim and I had decided we would stay just one night and then start our trip home. Due to some health issues back home, we feel that is where we would like to be. As for our trip, it was fabulous and we visited and did so many things that we had only dreamed of previously. We traveled the full Alaska Highway plus more ... even made a trip to the Arctic Circle. We saw lots of wilderness, as well as a few big cities that kind of shattered the "wild Alaska" image I had. We missed the Northern Lights, but only by a day or so if you believe the "you should have been here last ... read more

Lots of traveling this past week, including one night stops in Watson Lake, Iskut, 2 nights in Stewart, and another one night in Smithers, British Columbia. All of these were done without cellphone service, and very, very limited wifi. With the way we live today, this was quite different for most of us. We spent two nights in Stewart with only electricity, and no tv .... a good thing we carry water and plenty of movies. We thought that was rather rough until we got to Smithers with their 15 amp service. Most of our rigs would like to have higher amps available, but we managed with the help of generators on the cool morning. Oh .... before I go any further, I need to correct a mistake in the last post. I was telling you ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Skagway August 22nd 2015

Our trip took us from Haines to Skagway by way of a 45 minute ferry ride. To drive, it would have been 350 miles, but the ferry covered the 15 waterway miles easily. Skagway is definitely a tourist town. Our ferry dropped us off between 4 huge cruise ships that had already docked. We were not going to be alone in this small town. We had a total of 2 1/2 hours before a scheduled train ride, so like everyone else, we shopped and then got something to eat. The town is set up to resemble an old gold mining town, complete with old time store fronts and boardwalks up and down their Main Street. Our train ride was a 3 hour ride to White Pass Summit, a 40 mile round trip up to an elevation ... read more

We heard there was a great place to watch the bears not far from Haines, so we took a drive out last night. After watching several large grizzlies from across the river, we had a momma bear and her two cubs come out of the wooded area just ahead of us. We were able to move in rather close to get some good pictures and a good view of them catching and eating fish. The momma bear would catch a salmon and then one of the cubs would go to her to get the fish and then take it back to the bank to eat it. With two cubs, the bears were pretty busy. After they ate, they headed down the bank of the river right in front of us. There were plenty of people out ... read more
