We got up at 6:30, made breakfast, packed up and were on the walking trail by 7:30. 45 minutes later, we arrived at the train station. At least we got our exercise for the morning. We got some “coffee to go” with milk and secured a seat on the outside bench to wait for out train. We lucked out today… we were on track #1. That meant that we did not have to drag the bags down 2 flights of stairs, under the tracks and back up! WHEW!!! The train was on time. We were later than usual getting on the train due to a mass exodus out the door I picked. I could have figured out to get on at the other door but too late. We crammed into a compartment with two nice young ... read more

We got up late and headed to the art museums. We hiked up the hill to an area known as Gradec, or the old upper town. This area has museums as well as well as parliament (Sabor) and the government of Croatia (office ot the Prime Minister). There were lots of sleek black BMWs and Mercedes as well as flags and guards, and a TV reporter reporting, dressed in suit and tie and athletic shoes. We saw the Burglars’ Tower, 13th century guardian of the area; an orthodox church with the typical iconostasis, painted wall between heaven and earth; and the Church of St. Catherine, locked. The first museum we saw was the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art. This museum was originally known at the “Peasant Art Gallery.” It features 80 expressionistic paintings by untrained artists. ... read more

We went to the market in the morning. It is huge and held every day. At the bottom was the flower part. Up some steps was cheese and vegetables and some household goods. Up more steps was the clothing part. We got fruit and vegetables for our salad. We got bread for dinner and breakfast. It was fun and colorful. We went in the Cathedral, Croatia’s most important church, Neo-Gothic style. The church was destroyed several times by war and an earthquake in 1880. I lit a candle for Maryella and one for Charlie. We went to McDonald’s for free WIFI. I still can’t get WIFI at the apartment although Gary can on his Ipad. We sat in the bar next to McDonald’s and had a beer as we worked on internet stuff. I posted 3 ... read more

We got up and headed for the train station around 7:00 am. There we had our pastries and white coffee at (ugh-NO-YES) McDonald’s. It was quite the place, with free WIFI and a dollar menu for breakfast. The white coffee was pretty good. In Slovenia, McDonald’s charges for ketchup – 20 cents!!!! There is a transportation hub here. The bus station is across the parking lot from the train station. The train station has 5 or 6 places to eat, a large and very clean restroom with self-flushing toilets, and smoking lounges. There is an elevator for bikes that enters on one side and exits the other… ride right in and out. We found it worked fine for suitcases as well J. We dragged the bags out to the #6 platform where we waited for the ... read more

We went to the train station and bought tickets for Zagreb tomorrow and Lake Bled today. (For some reason I thought we got bus tickets and tried to get on one, but it was a train ticket… not much difference in time or money!) The train was electric, very comfortable; it stopped at every small town and took an hour to get to Lecce Bled. From there we took a 10 minute bus to the small resort town of Bled. The Lake Bled was as beautiful as all the descriptions we had read. It truely felt like Switzerland! The weather was so nice, sunny, 70 degrees, delightful place. We decided to walk around the lake, 3.5 miles, which the guide book says takes 1.5 hours without stops for photos. Our walk took almost 4 hours! We ... read more

Day 32: otherwise known as the day we went from the Adriatic to the Alps, or better yet, the day we went from 100 degrees to 80!!! Today I realized I have not watched a TV show since I left the USA (not counting a couple of World Cup soccer games), and I haven’t had a diet coke in 10 days!!! These are good things. Our ferry ride was our last of the trip. I really do like this Croatian ferry line Jardolina, clean, always on time, reasonably priced, decently restaurant, comfortable beds. AC is questionable though… we didn’t have much in our cabin and it was hot and stuffy. We got up at 5:45 am and went to breakfast at 6. We had a full breakfast of ham, cheese, scrambled eggs, bread, cereal and two ... read more

We slept very well with air conditioning! We were innovative again with our breakfast cooking, and figured out a way to soft boil our eggs… in an electric hot water pot. It took a while as each time it boiled, the pot turned itself off!!! But it was a good breakfast with last night’s bread and some peach juice. It is very HOT HOT HOT again. We did some interneting in the AC, packed up, and left the luggage in the hallway of our room. Our owner was so nice to let us leave the bags after we checked out at 11:00 am. We went by the ferry office to get our tickets; we need to board at 7:00 pm. We had a beer overlooking the harbor. Then we walked to the beach, 30 minutes, and ... read more

Today was a day of travel, as will be the next 2 as well. We had a taxi pick us up at the apartment at 11:30, bus to Vela Luka, Korkula (west end of the island) at 12:15-1:20pm, and ferry ride to Split at 1:45-4:30. This was the nicest Adriatic ferry we have been on. The AC worked really well, and it was newly decorated. Only bad part was a group of restless 30+ 4thgraders who were very loud! We arrived in Split on time at 4:30pm in the afternoon. We were met by the sobe owners, husband and wife team, so nice, who dragged our bags along the waterfront and up into the old town apartment… only a couple of stairs on the whole trip! They gave us a beer on the patio while they ... read more

This is going to be a down day, relaxing again. We saw some of the old town last night, and will probably try for the other high points tonight. We cooked breakfast and Gary did another load of laundry. The internet connection is fantastic, so we caught up on blogs and other travel arrangements. It was quite warm (83 degrees inside) and we don't have AC here (neither do any of the houses in this area). The heat made us very sleepy and content to do nothing. Coffee has been an interesting problem here in Croatia. Unlike Italy, were every apartment has at least one coffee pot (stove top boiler), we have not seen any form of a pot here in Croatia. They seem to use Nescafe instant coffee or get good “white”coffee at the bar ... read more
