Awoke around 6, watered the plants, made some instant coffee I’d picked up at the hotel in Malta, and worked on the blog on the balcony. The town is very quiet in the morning, only the lady across the alley cleaning her balcony and sweeping the street. We walked to the café/meeting place and had coffee and pastry. The group met and we had a tour of the city, with Marthe Keller pointing out practical places like the grocery and hardware store. My roomie Martha and I went to the grocery and stocked up. We came home and made ham and cheese paninis and a beer for lunch. At 3 pm, we met in the castle and drew numbers for studio space. It was tense! Mine was easy, any place without light. I got the storage ... read more

Woke up at 6:00 am, packed, had the B&B breakfast of sweet cream pastry, pear juice and strong coffee. Managed to get my bag down the stairs and walked to the train station, about 5 blocks. I saw my nice train agent and asked him again to help me remember my schedule. It went like this: Gallipoli to Zollino: 9:25 – 10:03 Zollino to Maglie 10:07 – 10:18 Maglie to Otronto 10:19 – 10:45 You can see that I had 4 minutes for the first connection and 1 minute for the second. I wrote down the next trains because I did not expect to be able to drag my heavy suitcase out of one train, across tracks, and on to another train. Amazingly I MADE ALL THE CONNECTIONS! It was difficult to figure out which train ... read more

The bus ride was not terrible but not comfortable either. I sat by a nice Italian girl who knew the bus drivers. We were put in the front row of seats, me by the window. There were 2 bus drivers who alternated every 3 or 4 hours. The bus started in Catania, where I was dropped off by the ferry bus, and ended in Gallipoli. I guess I’ve ridden the entire line. My destination was Gallipoli, which comes from the Greek word meaning beautiful city. It is a fishing village on the coast of southern Itlay. It has an old town on an island, which is linked to the new town by a 16th century bridge. The harbors are still used today by fishing boats, and there is plenty of fresh seafood and a seafood market. ... read more

I woke up early! I was warned that several rooms would be leaving at 6 am, and they were noisy but it was ok, just part of a B & B! I got up and walked along the waterfront. Mt. Etna was postcard perfect, so I have some nice shots. What a surprise to see a huge cruise ship pulling up to the pier!!! Ugh. Buses lined up, tour boats ready, all the restaurants and bars open, and a very friendly talkative guy cleaning up the street messes from the night before. He pointed out Etna, Castelmola, Taormina, etc. etc. in Italian, but I understood perfectly! I returned to my "villa." Breakfast this morning was the same as yesterday except fresh mozzerella was substituted for the spinach. I decided I would picnic on the beach today, ... read more

I awoke at 7:00 am, had a nice shower with plenty of hot water and water pressure. No AC here but it cools off around 5:00 pm. I was the first at 7:30 for breakfast, had the dining room to my self with Scubby Do on the TV. There was quite a spread… first I got American Coffee (with a large pitcher of hot steamed milk). Then a huge plate of food arrived: ham, salami, cheese, lettuce and tomato salad, and 2 spinach souffle cakes. On the side buffet was every kind of pastry imaginable, a bowl of chopped fruit, another of whole fruit, yogurt, granola, and juices! I made a sandwich with the leftovers from my plate, but did not end up eating it. I took the 8;45 bus to Taormina, about a 30 minute ... read more

5 am: awoke to catch the 6:45 am ferry to Sicily. My internet contact Kyle said I was to be at the port promptly at 5:45, so I WAS! I got a primo seat at the front of the observation deck, with a round table and 2 club chairs, 5 feet from the glass windows. What a beautiful boat, only 15 months old, felt like a cruise ship… 2 decks, one a club section with a center staircase worthy of a bride, the other full of regular passengers like me, 2 deli bars, and a deck for cars. I got a ham and cheese baguette, grilled, and a diet coke for breakfast. 70 euro for the trip from Malta to Catania. We arrived on time, at 8:30 am. I continued the trip on the (ferry) bus ... read more

My last day in Malta called for more sightseeing. Over the day,I spent 6.5 hours on buses, 1 hour on ferries, and countless hours on my feet. And I only spend $9.10 euros for all. 8:00 am: I caught the bus to Marsaxlokk, a traditional fishing village, dating from the Phoenicians. It was about 45 minutes away, and has a weekly Sunday market. The market had the usual stuff, veggies, clothes, electronics, etc. A nice man was eating fuzzy green things off a bushy plant, and when I asked him what they were, he gave me a handful. The texture of a mushy nut, with out much flavor… they were garbanzo beans!!! <... read more

What a great day of sight seeing!!! I went to bed at 8 pm last night, and had a wake up call for 6 am (why???). Slept in until 7:30. Got my gear together and headed for the old town of Valletta just a few blocks away. I opted out ot the expensive hotel buffet breakfast and got an ok "ham roll" from the street vendors for one euro. First stop was the Cathedral in the center of Valletto (main town, walkable). I found it last evening on my 4 hour "walk of the lost." I had a map but somehow I ended up at every end of the town except mine! (My great uncle Walter Williams said: "If you have a tongue in your head and money in your pocket, you can go anywhere." I have arrived in Malta, and checked into the hotel. The flight was uneventful. I flew from KCI to Detroit to Rome. I could not print a boarding pass for the flight to Malta before I left, and that caused a snag. But nice people with bigger problems of missed flights let me go first and I ran all the way to the gate in the nick of time.My luggage appeared properly, and I got an 8 Euro bus directly to my hotel, the Hotel Grand Excelsior. In general, Malta is sunny, warm, historic, and easy to get around in due to the fact that everyone speaks English. Public transportation is frequent and inexpensive. People are nice and helpful, but not too overly friendly. My Topeka-time watch says 7:30 am, but it is 2:30 pm here. ... read more
