Classical Indian Music - experienced in India Not everyone knows or even claims to enjoy Indian Classical Music. But let me tell you that for me - there is nothing more sublime than getting to a live Classical Indian concert IN India - and I tend to be more talking about instrumental than vocal - and a few more than others (including the use of western instruments): sitar, mandolin, sarode, santoor, violin, flute, tabla, shenai etc… When you go to such a concert - which are invariably at night and often in an outdoor garden or temple setting in the cool night air - where there are soft mattresses to sit on - and you just let the music take you away - I describe it as visiting heaven. I think it’s the contrast to the ... read more

Croc Report for just about NEW Crocs worn in India from Feb 3rd to March 23rd 2010. Welcome to the first official India 2010 Croc Report. Having decided to come to India wearing nothing but Crocs and a smile (oh - and some clothes) - with no other shoes to fall back on - it may be of some universal interest to report back on just how those Crocs are fairing? Firstly I would like to report that wearing bright red Crocs in India does indeed get one more attention perhaps than other ‘milder’ colours - both because it falls in line with the Bagwan colours of oranges and reds, but also because they are just dam bright and stick out. But the real substance of the report is about answering this fundamental and important question: ... read more

OK - so how many years have I secretly fantasised about riding a Royal Enfield Bullet around India? Well to be honest - only 30 years! Since I first came to India and saw one in fact! So - now I am older and wiser and....... I WANT one! One reason is because I can! Now that I am to be here for more than a year .... And now that I can easily afford it (well that was always the case really - but now.... ) . And because you only live once and life is short (hopefully not SHORTER if I get one)........ So do I need more convincing? Only by looking at one.... Check it out - the first pic is a done up Enfield I stumbled across in Varanasi last year. Second ... read more

So a less that taxing orientation so far - although there was a long train trip (return) across the country to contend with: Week 1 after the couple of days pre-mentioned in the last blog was spent as follows: Sunday evening to Monday evening traversing the country from Delhi to Puri (East Coast) in a train; Tuesday/ Wednesday / Thursday being observer in a Program Area Review (an annual event for VSO India) whilst staying in a resort in Puri! This was a little weird (the resort part) as I have never stayed in this sort of place in my times in India as a traveler. All part of the adapting to this new gig! Mind you - I did enjoy the pool and the sea (albeit that one had to wade out a little in ... read more

Now I am in Delhi (arrived 2 days ago) in very comfortable student-college type accom run by the Jesuits of all people! Attached bathroom with western toilet and hot water and a 'free' tab at the cafe etc... All a bit much given my last month's mode of travel but hey..... Today I am pleased to announce (too much info I know) that after a course of anti-biotics my acute bronchitis (self diagnosed after checking the internet) has turned the corner - my expectorant (which is MUCH less) has turned from green to yellow to white in just 3 days! Very little hoiking this morning and a slight cough still so.... good news here! BTW: my latest fantasy: try googling "Indian Enfield Bullet" and then see the "Thunderbird" model or the new 500 cc model. The ... read more

What does one say walking into beloved Pushkar to find the lake all but dry? I first came to Pushkar in 1983. At that time the lake was full and clean with hundreds (if not thousands) of large carp-like fish (between half and one metre in length). I used to swim daily in this lake - much to the interest and amusement of the Hindu pilgrims who came in droves to do their puja at the lakes edge (and no further!). Pushkar is a very special place for Hindus and more recently (the last 30 years at least) a haven for backpackers. The latter interest has grown Pushkar from a cute place to a bustling mecca of business (travellers who fancy themselves or successfully are making it as market/ shop sellers of Indian goods back in ... read more

I only did a quick overnight visit to this place as I had heard about it's architectural beauty and the unspoiled nature of it's old buildings. Apart from the same issues that seem to be everywhere at the moment re: failed lakes (the lake in Bundi is very low and toxic) due to poor monsoons and abuse, I was very pleasantly surprised by the amazing paintings on the walls and ceilings of the ill-kept palace/fort. Bundi is a city of approximately 88,000 inhabitants (2001) in Rajasthan in northwest India. It is of particular architectural note for its ornate forts, palaces, and stepwell reservoirs known as baoris. Attached are some pics which say it all Travel to Bundi from Pushkar involved a 15 min bus to Ajmer - then a 4.5 bus to Bundi. Sitting in the ... read more

So there is a place on the way to Bikaneer in Rajasthan boasting the "world famous" Rat Temple. Here is a temple where rats run free and are fed and nourished by pilgrims from afar - but certainly by the locals as the rats are all re-incarnated ancestors and other loved ones deceased. The deal then is that the rats in turn (when deceased) reincarnate into new towns folk. Careful not to step on someones grandma - of course no problem really (other than the 'fine' of having to then purchase a silver rat for the temple) because that rat will simply reincarnate itself. There is an albino rat there - and if you manage to 'spy' it you are bound to be lucky in life. ... read more

Kolyat is a small temple place 52 klms from Bikaneer in Rajasthan - I went on a two day little excursion from Pushkar to see the Rat Temple (that will need to be another blog) and Bikaneer (great architecture and fort and palace and market - perhaps another blog). But this place was just magic - small, shanti, and beautiful. Enjoy the shots.... read more

End of March 2009: So as you do, I followed a tip given to me by some fellow travellers I had met in Madhya Pradesh (Om Kareshwar) - about a tiny village in Kulu District, Himachal Pradesh among the foothills of the Himalayas on the Indian side. I only had a week left before I had to make my way back to Mumbai for my trip home - but the tip proved to be a gem. Jibhi is a village in the Bangar Valley in Kulu District - a couple of local bus trips up from the town of Aut. After settling in to the local guest house, I got into a pattern of starting my day walking 2klms up the narrow road alongside idyllic running streams - to a small eatery that catered for ... read more
