Hi all - the wanderer has eventually made it to Kathmandu - still no flights from Lukla today so an exciting chopper ride over the mountains brought us down. Don't really know why they don't just use choppers all the time but I guess it's a cost thing. Flight(s) to Delhi and then London are now tomorrow (21st) morning so back on schedule merely a day later than expected but all good. Now to exploit the delights of the lowlands just enough to allow the wanderer to rise early enough to make it back to the airport tomorrow morning...... read more

A day yesterday wasted haggling for non-existent helicopter flights to Kathmandu means the wanderer is still sat in Lukla as his international flight departs for London. The wanderer would love to be able to give you all an update on when he's now expected back in the UK but he currently has little idea. A few hours from now, a decision that should have been made yesterday will be made today and some aircraft will convey him to the lowlands. On the second day without flights, Lukla turns into a frustrating mess of a transport market. Yesterday afternoon the last couple of choppers were flying in and out through thick cloud, which I believe is somewhat against recommended behaviour. Amazing what some pilots will do for money. Having said that, the plane pilots are refusing to ... read more

Asia December 19th 2012

Morning intrepid readers. So, no further flights happened yesterday so the wanderer stayed in Lukla for a day. A brief wander down to the lower villages below the busy trails, a half-hour meditation by a dry stream and its colourful Mani rocks, and a lazy evening. The clamour for seats at 3pm when the booking office opens was surprisingly successful so we have a seat on the mythical 07:15 flight this morning. The good news is the wind has died down overnight but there are clouds hanging in the valley out there this morning. The theory here is that as the sun rises (it is kindly doing so as I type), the clouds will lift away and the planes will begin to fly. I like theories almost as much as I like their practical applications. It's ... read more

Long day's hike yesterday, now waiting for a flight. Two planes have braved it in and out so far, so it's looking promising but the skies are not completely clear so not certain we'll make it down to Kathmandu today. One more plane and we'll head for the airport. In the mean time, lazing about in the lodge with bad Nepalese TV in the background. What a life. Update: the next plane hasn't arrived yet. Sitting up here in warm sunshine sadly does not mean it's safe to fly as the high winds between here and Kathmandu are not to the pilot's pleasing. So a lazy morning and some lunch dispatched, we're approaching calling off an effort to reach Kathmandu today and hoping to find a seat on an early flight tomorrow.... read more

Greetings under-fed readers. Many apologies for the sparsity of updates but finding an online presence has been tricky since I left Dingboche all those days ago (feels like weeks). So, I left you as I was heading up to Chukkung and onwards to the pointy bit of Imja Tse. I'll try to post some details below but first I need to make a statement to alleviate some fears raised by a little bit of miscommunication. Status: All fingers fine, all toes fine, all thumbs fine, health good (if one ignores the sniffles and nasal congestion of high altitude). Hiking away happily and strongly every day apart from today (rest day in Namche). Apologies for any concerns I raised by being jovial about the temperature of my extremities. Right, now back to the story. So, after my ... read more

Typing with chilly fingers from Dingboche. Two stunningly clear days from Namche to here. A wee scamper above Tengboche monastery yesterday afternooon gave me enough beautiful landscape to make the trip worth it on its own. Today's trek was fine - no ill effects yet. Still stunningly clear all day but the clouds are now building around the high snowy peaks around me as I type so a weather change is quite likely on the way (colder weather). So we've brought the plan forward a day. Chukkung and the Ri tomorrow (8th) then up to base camp the next day (9th) and hope to summit the next morning (10th). All that is if the weather plays the game of course. If it really turns bad, then some lower-level trekking will replace the above. We did meet ... read more

Two days into the hike and I'm back in the homely and familiar sounds, sights, and smells of Namche. The flight in to Lukla was beautiful unless you don't like turbulence - the wee planes get chucked around quite visicously by the mountains. The landing was successful which is all one can ask of Lukla - it took a thump, a fierce gunning in reverse, and a couple of swerves to save us from missing the turning into the hard standing at the top. There's a cosy familiarity about the hills this time. The trails are quiet, the tea houses are near-empty, the Nepalese mountain folk are even more relaxed than usual. Compared to last time (Spring 2011), there is nobody here, and that's wonderful. Started the hike to Phakding by leading the trail to make ... read more

Landed safely. A couple of uneventful flights - the hardest part was getting through the queues at Heathrow - I dislike third world airports, especially when they're in supposedely first world countries. Views of the snow-topped Himalaya of to the side of the plane as we flew into Kathmandu made the feet tingle slightly. Met by Sugam (Shaleish's son) at the airport and efficiently transported to the "penthouse suite" of the moonlight hotel in Thamel. Don't get too excited, it is a bit special for Kathmandu but I've already had a few polite arguments with the bare-bone electrics. Bit of a waste not to be sharing it though...wrong continent again...ho hum. We fly early tomorrow morning (06:45 if all goes well) and the skies are looking clear so early start and should be on the hills ... read more

Last few hours before launching. Relaxing for a bit in the calm environs of Dormansland before the repetitive queueing of airports and planes begins. Survived the xmas football match with only a mildly sprained wrist and some aching leg muscles so I guess I have no excuse not to head for the giant hills :) Weather forecast looks near-perfect but does include a cold-snap from summit day (11th) onwards for a week (6 degrees is the high for those days, -15 the low). Otherwise it looks very pleasant indeed. Somewhat exhausted is not necessarily the best state to be starting this trip with so I'm hoping for some sleep on the overnight 8 hour flight to Delhi before the short hop to Kathmandu. Many thanks to all for the heart-felt wishes for success and safety - ... read more
