Morning all. A couple of days of tourist-like living, wee walks along the coast, and a day of logistics (washing and shopping) and planning brings the wanderer to the beginning of the trek in to the proudly bluffy Mt Owen. This will prove to be either a two-day or three-day tramp. Hiking in to Granity Pass Hut today and hoping to find a bunk to kip in there this evening. Hike to the summit of Mt Owen tomorrow and then back to the hut. Probably decide at that point (depending on time and tiredness) whether I hike out that day or stay another night in the hut and hike out the next day. It's a bit strange to not have to consider the weather when heading out for a hike on South Island but quite pleasant ... read more

Three day, two night tramp complete. Beautifully clear day makes for a hot hike in to Lake Angelus (4.5 hours) and overnight in Angelus hut surrounded by beauty and peace and exchanging tales with the random collection of hut visitors; 3 English alpine club members from the Bristol area (I have an invite to join their talks when I get back to the Avon area), a Spanish chef from Nelson, 2 retired Kiwis, 3 year-out after national service Israelis, and a small gaggle of French campers. Day two dawned clear so headed off to the summit of Mt Angelus (6808ft / 2075m). Slow progress on the way up the slidey scree to the crubmly top (2 hours). The summit is mine and the views from the top reach out to the sounds to the north, the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch March 3rd 2013

Landed back in the land of many a white cloud today. Short, uneventful flight from Melbourne. Found a semi-comfortable couch-style-device to kip on for a couple of hours while waiting for the hire car place to open. Now awaiting the final preparations of the wee vehicle before I can get on the road north to St Arnaud (Nelson Lakes). So a bit of hiccupy start to the NZ leg of the adventure but it's good to be here. It'll feel even better once I'm out on the country roads away from the traffic. The only other thing on the to do list today is a spot of stocking up on fuel and trekking foodstuffs before I hit the hills tomorrow.... read more

The requisite BBQ day yesterday (Saturday) going swimmingly and great to catch up with good friends again - thanks to all for making the effort to come out to the edges of Melbourne. Rest day required today but that's not quite possible when visiting with excited seven year old twins. Flight to Christrchurch (South Island) tonight, pick up a hire car, and head north to St Arnaud overnight. Collect enough bits of fuel, food, and liquid for a 3-day hike out to Mt Angelus starting Tuesday morning. Weather's looking a little bit wet but that's no big surprise. May the day be kind to all wherever on the planet you're reading this.... read more

Greetings - apologies for the tardiness of the update. I made it safely to Melbourne and have settled into comfortable surroundings in Chirnside Park amongst good friends and excited children. Into to the hustle of central Melbourne yesterday, a brief return visit to the Victoria Art Gallery. Once again most of the interesting wings are closed for refurbishment but worth a visit for one or two pieces. Great to meet up with the growing contingent of Melbourne friends. Now for a relatively lazy couple of days ahead and planning for the required BBQ gathering tomorrow before a Sunday evening hop to Christchurch.... read more

Asia » Singapore » Changi February 27th 2013

Hop 1 has brought the wanderer to the sunny, familiar, pleasantly efficient, impressively hygienic, and surprisingly bleep-ridden environs of Changi airport, Singapore. Not much sleep had on first flight despite the 5 am start yesterday. Shame really as that flight was the right one to sleep through in order to wake in the morning here and then be in approximately the right time zone when landing in Melbourne. Oh well, as is often the case, the wanderer's body is making it up as it goes along. Exhausted when it woke, caffeine fuelled on the busy drive to Heathrow, exhausted again as it boarded the plane, and yet it still decided about an hour or so of sleep would be enough and its owner should spend the rest of the flight in the company of films and ... read more

Long, long day of flights lands the wanderer back at heathrow. Then a drive to Surrey and a longer drive back to Clevedon leaves one rather spent. Not much sleep last night in Kathmandu due to the constant yapping and howling street-hounds. An 05:30 start, then the queues of Kathmandu airport, then efficient queues through Delhi airport and then Heathrow means my body thinks it's now 05:30 again (Kathmandu time) so I guess that's a full 24 hours of travel but I'm not confident my brain is doing the maths right at the moment so I'm going to go to bed and see if that still makes sense in the "morning". Another adventure completed. Sad to be back. Glad to be back. So looking forward to waking in my own bed in the morning. So missing ... read more
