Minimal sleep achieved last night and the fumbling attempts of the four summiteers to rise and leave early make for a groggy morning. Coffee and muesli dispatched, I hike up the ridge to the snowline. DB & MC and already there. We bask in the sunshine and drink in the mountain-top views all around while watching the summiteers progress across the snowfields above. Already the Kiwis are a good hour ahead of the Argentinians who seem to be struggling to cross the bergschrund lower down. By the time we decide to descend back to the hut, the Kiwis are very close to the summit of Mt French (not a necessary part of the route, but worth bagging on a clear day like today) and the Argentinian pair have made it to the top of the first ... read more

It's a chilly morning so Kai breakfast by the lake is an indoor affair today. Cloud hangs over the tops of the hills in the distance but that should lift and dissipate by some time this afternoon. The long drive down the familiar Matukituki valley to the roadend at Raspberry Creek. Dodging sheep, cows, and tourists (day-trippers to the Rob Roy Glacier) in the early parts of the valley but tranquility returns after Aspiring hut. Quick chat with the hut warden at Aspiring (Stu North - a man of some legend in the hills here) confirms that a half hour or so about French Ridge hut the terrain turns into mountaineering land and thus requires kit I don't have with me. So that confirms the plan for the next couple of days - up to French ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Wanaka March 18th 2013

When was the last time the wanderer had two rest days on the trot? During an NZ trip, I don't recall it happening before now... Rain is easing so the wanderer will be dragging his partially recovered feet out to the familiar beauty of the Matukituki valley tomorrow. Up to French Ridge hut for tomorrow night. Then up to as close as terrain will allow to the quarterdeck pass and/or Mt French, then down and up to Liverpool hut for the next night, then back out to "civilisation" the next day. Or something like that - depends on how the legs and feet and shoulders react to being taken out on the trail again.... read more

Rain, rain, rain, and some more rain. Good day to let the feet recover, wash the tramp out of my clothing, do some planning and generally not do much else.... read more

Early start and painful hike out - the feet are quite serious about making the wanderer aware they haven't had a rest in a while. Out, up to Franz Josef to collect bits then back down to Wanaka ahead of the rain and then slow down with beer, pizza, and pool and other such "civilised" passtimes...... read more

Long drive south to Franz Josef with a pause for a decent breakfast (SEBI 6.9) in Hokitika. Franz Josef is the usual bustle of tourist coaches and backpackers. I find my digs, change into trekking clothes, sling a waterproof in the day-pack just in case and drive on south to Mt Fox. Not able to work out why I ended up booking digs in Franz Josef as opposed to Fox but never mind. A half hour's drive and I'm parked up at Thirsty Culvert again - as I was all those years ago, but this time without RA, without the rain, and - amazingly - without too many sandflies. I discover the tailgate of the van (Rob - same size as a Toyota Lucida, seats taken out the back to make a bed) does not lock. ... read more

The alarm goes off at 06:06. The wanderer's brain is shocked into action - which button is it again? Damn, not that one, ah - there it is. Finally, silence again - apart from the distant rumble of the trucks passing on the highway. A faint glow of pre-dawn light from the uncurtained window in the corner. Now why was the alarm set? Oh yes, Mt Owen. Turn onto your back. Now lift your legs. Ooh - not much pain at all actually - that's a pleasant surprise. Now lift your head. Hmm. Now weigh your brain - does it want to rise and hike up a hot mountain? Oh dear - still feeling weak brain? Shame. Tell you what, let's just lie here for a few minutes, do the visualisation thing and see how that ... read more

An hour in to the day the wanderer wanders into the DOC office in Motueka. Granity Pass hut? "Dunno - no-one's been there for a while, but there's no chance of there being any water up there. But if you do make it there can you pop in and let us know what's happening up there?" The wanderer agrees of course but wanders out of the building wondering how much water he needs to carry for three days of trekking in this heat. A lot. Even if one allows the bare minimum of two litres a day, that's six litres, which is 6 kg in the pack. And that's just for hiking, what does one do about evenings and mornings? An hour's drive to Tapawera is interrupted only by a high-speed collision with an insect - ... read more
