An alleged rest day - always a challenge for the wanderer. But the day actually began restfully enough. A wander across the road to the cute little court house cafe for excellent eggs & bacon with good coffee. A few average provisions collected from the sparsely-stocked village store - to be pulled together into trmpaing food later for whatever tramp tomorrow brings. But first the afternoon wants filling and farewell spit is only a short drive north. So off the wanderer goes for a visit to Cape Farewell, then a short hike out to Wharariki beach (I'll let the pics do the talking for those two). Then back along to Puponga Farm park and the last point mortal humans can drive to. Now this is a rest day, and the four days of the Wangapeka have ... read more

Four wonderful days in Kahurangi National Park. Six hour hike in to Stone hut on day one, wet and mushy and tiring. Established base camp in the hut for the next two nights. Had the hut to myself on night one - the only "disturbance" in the supremely idyllic spot surrounded by podocarp-carpeted ranges were the Whio (whistling blue ducks - endangered) who were being rather amorous overnight. Day hike (5 hours) up to the biggest of Biggs's tops on day two. Stunning beautiful day with clear tops all around - the Arthur range, Mt Owen (the one that still eludes me), Mt Kendall still sporting snow on his sides, and so many other peaks and ranges stretching away as far as the eye could see (and the eye could see dozens of miles on this ... read more

Woke multiple times to the delightful sound of the rain pounding on the roof. It continued to do so most of the day - a proper downpour and perfectly timed to coincide with a rest day. Popped up the coast to Motueka and had a long chat about plans at the DOC office. All looking good for Wangapeka track and Leslie-Karamea track - I just have to decide which order to do them in. Supplies collected and back to the cottage to prepare the pack for the next few days. A heavy food bag tells me I'm taking too much but I don't mind carrying it both into and out of the trek if not used (better to have and not need than to need and not have). Jotted down 3-night trek plans for both Wangapeka ... read more

So Monday dawned and I dragged my weary bones into the car to navigate the 2-hour drive to the road-end below Mt Holdsworth. Battling some Wellington-bound commuter traffic for the first half hour, then queuing up to get past the results of the guy who decided to start his week by plowing his truck into a concrete electricity post, dropping the post and the lines skillfully across the road. Eventually managed to start heading in the right direction (i.e. away from Wellington) and made it to Featherston to stop for a decent coffee and a spot of light breakfast (at the Everest cafe...). Then onwards to the road-end, final re-packing of the pack, some cunning hiding of important things in places within the car where a thief might not think to look beyond the obvious bag ... read more

A long and painful series of flights landed me safely in Wellington. The sinuses that had been suffering through a cold since last weekend made their complaints known all the way through the many hours on planes. The first flight was empty so I claimed a row of seats managed to lie down and even get some sleep. From Bangkok to Auckland was a different story - a full plane with a small army of people who clearly lacked any understanding of the concept of personal space. That made landing in NZ an even bigger relief than normal. Seamless transfer (by foot) to the domestic terminal and thence to Wellington. Cloudy day so no clear views of the volcanoes on the way down. The beauty of the approach to Wellington was completely overtaken by intense pain. ... read more

The wanderer is grasping another opportunity to escape the grind. Flight to Bangkok boarding any minute now - from there to Auckland, from there to Wellington, from there to a very welcome December tour of some of his beloved New Zealand. P.S. All together now Rush fans: "we're on the plane to Bangkok..."... read more

Greetings patient ones. I landed back in the UK to blue skies and warm sunshine - an unexpected pleasure. Some 56 hours after leaving El Calafate, two buses, a taxi, three planes, four airports, and two trains later the wanderer is back in the wee abode he chooses to use as the base for his life. The body is weary and the mind is finding it somewhat tricky to comprehend (once again) the instant switch of context that happens when you board a plane half a (very different) world away and then find yourself in familiar surroundings at the other end. I'll try to go back and update some trail details but the mind is too blurred for the moment. The body needs a bath and the brain needs time to lie still in its juices ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas March 6th 2014

Long bus rides all worked smoothly despite the usual confused border crossings (out one, in the other, exit here, enter there, scan there, don't bother there, fill in these forms but you don't need that one, give that one there, this one here, that one's just for decoration etc etc). Evening arrival in PA leaves little chance for anything beyond a wee stroll around town before a good night's rest in a decent bed. Another sunny morning is with me as I type, the last bits being packed up, the short trip out to the airport and then three flights north, north east, north north east will land me back under the grey skies of Heathrow. Feels like a bit of a short dipping of the toe into South American trekking but it's been wonderful. The ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate March 4th 2014

Hi all. Apologies for the lack of updates. Been out from Torres del Paine (TdP) for three days now but have been filling the hours with rather a lot of living instead of typing. This'll be a short update and perhaps a longer one will appear once I've made it home and if I manage to find an evening free to meander back through the memories of this trip. So, a brief summary will have to suffice: 1. Arrived Punta Arenas (PA), found FD already installed in hostal. Shower, out into town to find the bus company and book a bus to Puerto Natales (PN) the next day, then random dinner consisting mostly of confusion about what we ordered, then sleep. 2. Rise and wander around town a bit, pick up a couple of last minute ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales February 23rd 2014

Long but pleasant bus ride brings the wanderer under the snow-patched peaks and icy coastal waters of Puerto Natales. Much booking means the (slightly amended) plan is now lined up for an exit from the park the evening before originally planned and then onwards into Argentina and to El Calafate, gaining access to the Perito Moreno glacier. Many, many more hours on many more buses lie in this wanderer's near future but much, much beauty lies at either end of every one of them. Tomorrow begins six nights in tents under the grandeur of the Torres del Paine. A long standing plan rolling into sight.... read more
