Another late rise. I think we have all been fighting off a cold over the past week. It explains why we've all been grumpy and short with each other at various times this week. We're heading south today, for a couple of days, to the colonial city of Melaka. The journey to the bus station took a little longer than expected as we got dropped off at the station that no longer had bus departures! Terminal Bersepadu Selatan was a bright, airy and cool building which puts British bus stations to shame. The coaches are not quite up to Peruvian levels, however, red flocked curtains with tassles is also a bit of a step up from National Express. Hotel Majestic was a lovely colonial style house built in the 1920's. The kids were hungry so we ... read more

We rose late after getting to bed just after midnight. The walk to brunch was about 15 minutes and we immediately recognised that Kuala Lumpur is much wealthier than Jakarta. Lucy in the Sky was the name of the coffee shop and the staff were very accommodating as Ed's rounds of toast kept rolling in. Hat knocked a glass off a shelf and was mortified, however, they were very laid back and even made her a hot chocolate with a teddy bear shaped into the milk and chocolate writhing on the saucer which said no worries. We caught a taxi to the Petronas Twin Towers to visit the science museum on the 4th floor. It had been created by the Malaysian petrochemical company Petronas and therefore there was quite a bit about how oil was extracted ... read more

It was a morning of sorting and packing, so we could jettison stuff that was no longer needed and reduce the weight of our bags which have gotten heavier. A late lunch and then we took a taxi to the airport. I'd forgotten to check our flight status to see if the times has moved and was relieve that they hadn't. Ed, Hat and I played games whilst Cas did a bit of shopping. The flight was only 2 hours and Cas' mis-spent twenties came in very handy as she managed to snaffle a collection of mini wine bottles from the hostesses. We arrived fairly late and the kids were brilliant again, dealing with the tiredness with much more fortitude than pre-travelling. That said, we were all greatly relieved to get into our room in the ... read more

We were picked up by Tono and we asked if he could take us to a play park on the way back to Yogya. It turns out that play park has much larger connotations in Zinfonesia and we ended up in a half park - half theme park - half zoo - half museum place. The kids loved it and raced from one thing to the next. They really didn't get the hang of steering the peddle boats and caused some jams. They were keen to go in the 6D cinema and I must say that I had my eyes closed the whole time as it gave immediate motion sickness ... read more

We now start the return journey to Jakarta and we plumped for a 50 minute flight to Jakarta rather than a 9-10 hour train journey.... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Borobudur April 29th 2016

We spent the day in the pool to get rid of the kids energy and it certainly helped my legs which are very stiff and sore from the climb. About 3.30 our car arrived for the 40 minute drive to Borobudur. Built in AD760, and taking sixty years to complete, it is the wolds largest Buddhist temple. It was forgotten for over a 1000 years and rediscovered around 1850, overgrown and covered. We took the first level corridor, about 8 foot wide, and walked around the whole perimeter. Then moved up to the second level and so on. The walls of each corridor are covered with stone carvings, telling the story of Buddhism. After 4 levels you reach three circular levels with giant stone stupas (bell shaped with intricate holes). We'd chosen to come in the ... read more

We were all up early this morning for a trip to do some cave tubing at Goa Pindul Cas had heard that there were bats so she decided to sit this one out. The limestone cave was 1000ft long and filled with stalactite in all sorts of formations. Priest used to use the chambers for meditation and it was believe that touching a particular stalactite would bring strength to a man and a drop of water from a row of little stalactites would bring beauty to a women (Hat got three drops, so she'll be gorge). We sat in giant car inner tubes and were tied together in a line. Out guide pointed out the names of various rock shapes and the different varieties of bats that hung from the roof in the first two chambers. ... read more

Cas took Ed and Hat on a crafts morning in Jogja. A two hour visit to a traditional batik factory where they all go to make their own design and gave them printed. The kids loved the factory and Cas kept her beady eye on them as there were vats of hot wax etc. After this they went to a silversmiths workshop to make rings. They were given strips of silver to hammer, twist, stamp and they were delighted to get their hands on a blowtorch to do some soldering. They turned up at the villa st 2.00pm, bearing a slice of delicious Dutch apple pie. I had the full run down of how everything was made and they were very enthusiastic about both visits. Cas had made me a lovely silver ring, as I'd left ... read more

Hat was not very keen on me leaving to go up the volcano and there was a great deal of tears before she settled down to sleep. I promised her that I would take a picture at the top of her card with Disney's Beast. The car picked me up at 10pm and it took 2 hours to reach the guides house. The road for the final hour was shockingly bad and the suspension groaned continuously. I stocked up on the way with chocolate, gummy bears and water. Indonesian are very quiet people and the four blokes in the guide's house spoke gently and politely to each other. The house was large, yet the floor was mud and their cows were at the kitchen door. At 1.00am this morning I left with my guide, Ram Li. ... read more

Breakfast was served up st the main house and the owner couldn't have been more accommodating. His Dutch heritage shows in the fusion breakfast which included a green pancake fringed with bananas (?). After yesterday's travelling we all just fancied a day of kicking back. The kids watched some films, Ed and Zi played chess and droughts. It also took an age to upload seven days of blog pictures as it had been impossible in Batu Karas. Finally, Cas and I completely rethought the Cambodia and Laos itinerary and redid it to reduce travelling and create more time for activities/day trips. We took a car to a local restaurant. Cas wasn't feeling too great when we'd ordered - it was probably the heat as it was both hot and very humid. After lunch we asked our ... read more
