We took a taxi about 9.15 to the airport to catch our flight to China. But things didn't quite unfold as planned. It turns out that our plane lands at Nanking before arriving at Kying. The Chinese aiming ration policy treats this as two ports of entry and therefore we need a tourist visa rather than our planned 72 hour transit visa. The check-in staff were very helpful and advised us to go to the Chinese Eastern Airways ticket office to change our flight to tomorrow as this as a direct flight to Kunming. The whole thing took all morning to sort out, but we did it. We had a great lunch in town and everyone was feeling settled. We looked into taking a taxi to Thsiland for tea, but the travel time was too much ... read more

Asia May 23rd 2016

It was a coach rather than a minibus which took us to Vientiane. And it was overbooked, so they tried to ask one couple to sit on plastic garden chairs that they placed in the aisle - not surprisingly, they refused and waited for the next bus. Vientiane is the smallest capital we've visited, with a population of just 250k. We dropped our stuff off at the hotel and went into the central district for a late lunch in a cafe. There was something on the menu for everyone, so there was a lot of excitement around the table and Ed was doubly delighted as it also housed a shop selling blue cheese and authentic French baguettes. We took a little walk and browsed. The Culture Hall has the largest doorway I've ever seen and we ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng May 23rd 2016

After breakfast we took off for an hour walk as we had another four hour bus journey. We crossed a wooden plank bridges high was a bit narrow given the vans that also crossed with inches to spare as we moved to the side. We took a route that followed the banks of the River Song, before heading away from the river towards the hills. The rains overnight were very heavy so the trails were muddy and Cas had a number of near miss slips. In the end we all walked barefoot through the squelchy mud and orange puddles and it was great fun. We ended our walk at the base of Pha Poak, a steep hill with a bamboo staircase to climb up and a flag on the top (you can just make it out ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng May 22nd 2016

It was an early start so that we could have a big breakfast before catching our minibus. We were the first ones on the bus and it was rapidly filled with late 20's Anericans. It was only 120 miles to Vang Vieng, but progress was quite slow. Sometimes the road was metalled, other times it was dirt and one time, as we went over a mountain pass, the road had simply been washed away. This was the hairiest moment of the whole trip as the minibus went along the very edge of the road, less than a foot away was a massive drop to the valley floor below. All we could do was cross our fingers as stopping the van could have been disastrous. The scenery on our five hour trip was spectacular, very mountainous and ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang May 21st 2016

Today was mostly about getting stuff done and stuff sorted prior to moving on again. I popped out mid morning to buy our seats on a minibus going to Vang Vieng tomorrow and opted for speed (4 hrs) over luxury (6 hrs). We sent Ed to reception with all our laundry, so that we have everything clean in our bags before we head to China in a few days. When I got back, the room smelt lovely and Ed and Hat had set up 'Lemongrass' which did massages and beauty treatments. Cas was almost asleep as Hat ran through her post treatment feedback form. I made an 'appointment' and was treated to a very professional head, hand and foot massage and I took the optional hair cut and shave. Very relaxing. For lunch we wndered down ... read more

We all took a shower to get rid of the mud on our arms and legs and then had some chill out time which included a nice bottle of red wine for Cas and I on our terrace. Cas found two great restaurants and the hotel provided what can only be described as an electric golf buggy to transport us there. It was very pretty as the tables were surrounded by a lily pad pond. Except...there was nothing on the menu suitable for Ed and Hat - so we politely left. A 15 minute walk along the main road, through the many stalls being set up for the night market and we and reached a bamboo bridge which took us across the river to the second restaurant. It was a really good decision because we had ... read more

We spent the day on a rice farm called Living Land, a hands-on go at all fourteen stages of rice production. From ploughing a paddy field with a water buffalo (Hat initially thought it was a big pink pig because it was pink and had piggy ears), to planting the young shoots, to harvesting with a sickle to threshing, carrying and dehusking and winnowing. It was a proper practical farming experience and it was amazing to hear that 20% of the rice in Laos is still made in this traditional labour intensive way. We all wore paddy hats and were given a bamboo pole to help our balance as we walked along the thin and very slippery mud banks that enclosed each paddy field. As you can imagine, we all got very muddy and this was ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang May 19th 2016

I updated our blog map. We've passed 25,600 miles; that's a lot of air, bus, boat, coach, motorhome, bicycle, tricycle and foot travelling. It was very atmospheric to watch the sun go down behind the jungle covered crags, with fisherman in very long and narrow boats whipping down the Mekong, as we ordered and ate our evening meal; chicken curry for Cas, Chicken and mash for the Kids and Chicken Noodle soup for me. Bock,bock,bock,bock,bock,begowwwwk.... read more

Back in town we jumped out of the tuk tuk at a restaurant which had been recommended. The food was well prepared, but the taste was lacking. Not sure if this is a Laotian or a restaurant thing. Ed didn't eat, so we headed to a French cafe that served freshly warmed baguettes, oh, and a chocolate eclair for the ladies to share... There is still a French community in Luang Prabang and we spotted a French Bakery that who's display of pastries would have done a Boulangerie in Provence proud. On the way back to our hotel we spotted a Buddhist temple that had huge, and I'm really talking huge, drums hung on chains, and a gold statue of Buddha that towered over Ed and Hat.... read more

On the way back from our waterfall walk we asked our driver to stop at the Luang Prabang Elephant Camp. For £1.75 we all got to feed a herd of elephants with banana leaves and stalks. Ed and Hat were really delighted and neither Cas or I had ever been this close to one before. They were Asian jungle elephants, with much smaller ears than their African cousins. Their trunks are incredibly dexterous and can rolls the food in all directions before placing a wad in their mouths. There were a couple of young ones, about 2 years old, and these were a bit more playful in taking the food. Ed gave many of them names and went up and down chatting to them and dishing out food.... read more
