Our motorhome has served us well. Plenty of room for us to spread out and not feel like we're living on top of each other. The diesel is really cheap compared to the UK, about 40p a litre. On the drive to Miranda we cut along a farm gravel track which must have been a mile long and straight enough to have made a Roman proud. As there was no possibility of traffic, both the kids got to have a long drive. I've been singing Motorhead's Keepa Motor Runnin' and they both burst into a rendition of it as they drove. Ed and Cas called the vehicle Bessie and Hat and I called in MMM (a Scooby Doo inspired Mallinder Mystery Machine).... read more

Another glorious morning so we spent it on the beach outside the motorhome. We walked all the way to the end to see if we could find a route round to a tiny little bay that we could see. There was a kind of estuary to cross and as we drew near we could see that the water ran too deep and fast to make a crossing. The kids beachcombed for shells and we set laid out some towels to catch the lovely mid morning sun. Cas took the kids in for a dip and then Ed and Hat set about building a jacuzzi in the wet sand. After lunch we set off on our last stop before Auckland as the motorhome is due back on the 9th and we fly on the 10th. We pitched ... read more

The sky was bight blue so we thought a coastal walk to a pretty bay would suit everyone. From Waihi beach we took a forest trail which snaked uphill. After 15 minutes Cas thought that the trail reminded her of a dog walking path rather than an idyllic coastal footpath. It was not long after this thought that she realised that we'd taken, well, a dog walking path. We retraced and were soon on the right path. It ran along the cliffs and gave great panoramic views of the islands in Waihi Bay. We then descended to Orokawa Bay, a long, white sand beach that was fringed with overhanging trees, perfect for monkey children. Ed and Hat spent a good hour lying in the surf as waves crashed over then. Cas and I were both in ... read more

It's clear that our standards have dropped and we are now slumming it on the food front. Tonight's dinner was a very plain affair of Coromandel green lipped mussels and a baguette to mop up the sauce of white wine/garlic/cream/parsley. We've never seen mussels as big as these and they were very sweet.... read more

We're we packed up and off by 9.00, heading West. We stopped in Te Ahora, translates to Mountains of Love, for food and to pack up a box to send home. We have spare stuff that we just don't need eg thermals, hats, bumbag, camera case, travel towels and head rests etc. All in all it was 8 kilos and a pretty large box. The travellers adage is 'pack your bags, then take half of it out and whatever you think you'll spend, you should double it. The adage is holding out so far. We pulled up at Karangahake Gorge and took off on a 'Windows Walk'. The area has a gold mining past and it was like walking the set of Indiana Jones and Janes Bond. Several large, and wobbly, suspension bridges took us across ... read more

The walk was alongside a very pretty Te Waihu valley which had the bluest river and pools we'd ever seen. Rock filtered spring water gave the water it's blueness and it sort of glowed when the sun shone on and reflected off the white sandy riverbed. Lots of dips were taken along the way and a great deal of laughter was had, especially when the grown ups got either in and out of the pools. Cas ventured (with many 'ooohs' and 'it's freezing') into one particularly deep blue pool and perched herself on a rock that sat just below the surface; I declared to the kids that it was the mermaid of Copenhagen come back to life. I'm not sure I'd ever heard Ed and Hat laugh so much as when I tried to pull Cas ... read more

Before brekkie it was Ninja Warrior time and Hat was quite insistent that I did all the proper introductions like they do on the TV series: What's your occupation? Who's here supporting you today? Have you done lots of training this year? Ed was first off on the course and I did my best to commentate as each completed the course: 'he's on'the wheel of fate', 'she's looking very steady on the twelve rings of fear' and 'look at him make light work of the I ron sliders'. They loved it and were all in. I was even asked to make the right noises if they touched the ground and got a time penalty and, of course, the big fanfare when they touched the button at the end of the course. The level of determination was ... read more

Did another three hours driving north today and passed through Hamilton. To stretch our legs we went to the park gardens which has won international awards. It was excellent, a host of interconnected gardens from different periods and countries. Ed and Hat took turns choosing which door to go through next. Ed, favourites were the Tropical and the Chinese gardens. Cas the Japanese and Italian. Hat the Japanese and Backyard. And mine was the Chinese and Italian. We grabbed a bite to eat and did the final 20 mins to our destinations which was a in Ngaruawhia Memorial Park. There were red poppy flags all over as they remember ANZAC day on the 26th April. It was on the banks of the river and the park had an excellent obstacle course which the kids played merrily ... read more

There was a constant drizzle all morning but we decided to give mountain biking a go. We got dropped off with four bikes and cycled back to base along a 15 km old coach road. It took us up hill and down dale through canopy forests filled with Cabbage trees and giant fern trees. There were wide grassy parts, dark narrow paths, mud, cobbles, gravel, roots and rocks and to add a bit more spice, the drizzle kept going for the first couple of hours. All in all quite challenging terrain for Ed and Hat. Ed was a natural and led us most of the way., Hat was a bit unsure to start with but by the half way point she had she gotten into her stride and took the descents with a good line. There ... read more
