South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon March 14th 2016

It was raining and dark from bulging clouds when we arrived at the Colca Lodge, deep in the Colca Canyon, so we didn't get to see the view till the following. And what a sight greeted us as we opened our curtains and the door to our room. A river churned below us, through the canyon, the sky was bright blue, swathes of cacti covered the inclines and were brimming with pinky orange coloured fruit, there was an Alpaca farm on the opposite river bank and terraces of vegetable were growing up the hills and the most amazing thing of all was the billowing steam, just like an old train, that came up from geyser fed hot spring pools down by the river. A magnificent vista or mucho bonista as you'd say in the local tongue. ... read more

It had been cold in the reed hut, but no one had a blue nose in the morning. However, I had been up several times with a dodgy tummy and it was both cold, dark and even more peaceful in the dead of night. After breakfast, Ed and Hat carried on playing with the three year old who lived on the island, Ed was the crocodile and this caused much hilarity. Hat gave her the pink fairy that she'd bought in Nazca to the little girl as she didn't seem to have any toys. Just as we were leaving, Elsa presented Hat and Ed with brightly coloured woolly hats and minature reed boats. A great lesson of what goes around, comes around. It was raining as we took our last spongey step off the island. Thankfully, ... read more

Our guide picked us up near the harbour and took us a short journey around the lake to the most obscure little jetty I've ever seen; we drive over a very bumpy set of railway tracks and then down a rough concrete ramp. A small open boat was waiting for us and we gingerly clambered aboard. Our skipper pushed off into the reeds with his paddle and we soon emerged into a 12 foot channel that went this way and that way, like water roads. Ed and I knelt in the front and leant on the prow, as the spray blasted us, it really was a joint 'Yeehaa' moment. We looked behind us and Cas and Hat had huge beaming smiles. The reeds go on for as far as the eye can see. Despite being at ... read more

Hat and I nipped out this morning to collect loads of goodies from street venders, as we are travelling to the Uris islands around lunchtime and we think it might be tricky to find a bakery amounts the reeds. We bought chicken pasties with chilli and limes, quails eggs, and a range of pastries. Everyone was happy. Then took a taxi down to the port and waited by a lighthouse for our guide. Interestingly, there was a long black and white ship moored up, called Yavari. Turns out that it was made in Brum in 1862 and shipped over the Andes on mules which took six years to complete.... read more

Gearing ourselves up for tonight's trip to the floating islands includes having a stockpile of coco leaf tea to help with this altitude sickness The colour is not the most enticing but the flavour is ok...... read more

The air was so thin that I couldn't sleep a wink. Every time my breathing slowed down I had to wake up to take a deep gasp. Fortunately, the kids and Cas were able to sleep through. Cas woke with a headache and we are both feeling the effects of attitude sickness; it's like having a very bad hangover. There was a bowl of coco leaves next to the hot water at breakfast and I'd read that drinking coco tea can help. They look like bay leaves and the taste is very mild. We had a wander around Puno and went to visit a quirky exhibition of traditional costumes. However, it was empty when we arrived. The kids are clearly going through a growth spurt, Hat in particular, as their attention quite quickly turned to 'are ... read more

South America » Peru March 10th 2016

We all had our best nights sleep so far because it was much cooler in Arequipa. An early breakfast at the hotel before taking a taxi to the station for our bus to Puno. I managed to squirrel away some buttered rolls for the journey as it takes 6 1/2 hours. Hat demolished most of the strawberry yoghurt at the breakfast bar, 'it's sooo good, deee-licious'. We'd decided to mix up our bus seat-mate arrangement, so it was Cas and Ed together and Hat and I on the other side of the aisle. The bus steadily wound its way up and up through the mountains and the terrain changed in stages. Dry sand and rock with cacti that looked just like the one that Steve has in his sitting room. These gave way too ridged cacti ... read more

Took a taxi to a recommended Peruvian restaurant and it was great; musicians playing pipes and those little guitars had us all jiving on our seats. Ed quite forgot where he was and began to jive at the table, that lad has good Latin rthymn. Ed and Hat both tried new food and enjoyed their meals. The roccola (stuffed peppers) were excellent. On 20 mins walk back to our hotel we bought a tennis ball and in the gardens of the hotel we did a games lesson. This consisted of catch and then we did target practice to see who could get the ball into the mouth of an enormous pottery urns. The urn was so big in fact that both kids could climb inside at the same time, like Ali Baba. Hat and Ed were ... read more

There has been a big Hat swap around. Cas' cowboy hat has gone to Ed, Ed's baseball cap has come to me and Cas has bought a blue and cream hat. Hat already has a girly sombrero affair with lots of ribbon and material. At Nazca bus station last night, Hat was so tired that she crashed out on top of her bags and we lifted her into the bus when it was all loaded. The overnight bus journey has the most comfortable chairs of any bus we've been on. Poor Ed woke up in the night and didn't know where he was and was quite upset and said he wasn't enjoying it; it took a lot of hair stroking to get him back off and then he slept very well and he was back to ... read more

Last night's visit to my Trip Advisor recommended Pizza Boulevard was an experience; three pizzas ordered and three pizzas remaining on the table when we left. Good learning to only go with recommendations that have +50 review to avoid any owner influence. Up early again, so Cas finished Harry Potter book one and started the first chapter of book two. I was a bit peckish so had one of my treats, which are Percy Pigs. There is enough for one a week and two for two weeks, of course I might not be able to ration myself. The combination of baking hot room, hard bed and that cock-a-doodle-do-ing has led Cas to make some changes to future accommodation, to add some more hotels with either air con or a pool so that we can cool down. ... read more
