Breakfast turned out to be much better than expected (for the adults anyway), including slices of cucumber topped with dressed onions; sounds strange for brekkie but it was delicious. We headed out to take a look around the covered markets which were full of very different fruit and veg and unusual smells. Huge bags of onions and melons and things we didn't recognise. Cas and Hat bought straw hats as the sun is intense at a warming 32 degrees C. We bought some postcards, a Peruvian scrunchie and two cheap plastic toys (Hat's was a little doll) and then we were all ready for drinks and a meal at Encantada.... read more

Staying at Nazca House, a guest house run by the lovely Nancy. It has a tiny door in a rendered wall and this was why it was took us time to find. After unpacking and relaxing in our little room, it was time for Ed and I to go out in search of food. Night had fallen and the streets were very busy and I spotted lots of suspicious looking people, but this could simply be that I'm not used to travelling yet. We came back with some random morsels. The room was baking hot in the night, the fan only really helped to move the hot air around the room. Cas and I woke up laughing as it sounds like we're staying on a farm, with cockerels crowing and dogs barking from the early hours. ... read more

Three and a half hours on the bus without water or breakfast and the kids were getting slightly fractious. Hunger and thirst are not something that they've had much experience of, sort of a new feeling for them to conquer. We played games including 'if you could have any food you wanted, what would it be..'. Hat's list included creamy M&S mash and marshmallows. We were pounced on by the tour Hawks at Nazca bus station, but we new where we were heading - Casa La Encantada (enchanted house) - a recommended place to eat. We spent almost three hours there and there were several rounds of food ordered and a lot of dosh spent on jugs of amazing passion fruit. We kept on having to say to the kids that we wouldn't leave until they ... read more

All up early as we still haven't fully adjusted to the time. Mozzi's throughout the Eco-bungalow (read small caravan surrounded by bamboo) as it was roasting and we opened all the windows before we went to bed. I was woken up by Ed in the middle of the night as he was being bitten all over. We shut the windows and squished as many as we could find. Hat slept through the entire thing. By morning time it was clear that Ed has the sweetest blood as he received 26 bites. By comparison, Hattie had 10 bites. We hadn't booked the taxi from the caravan site so we asked the security guard to call us one which, given our lack of common language, was a little tricky.. The bus station (a shack with a loo) had ... read more

The kids are singing 'it's a hard knock life in the pool; out of the mouth of babes...we're so lucky to be doing this trip. Took the 3 1/2 hour bus to Paracas. Coach was very comfy but the 18 rated action movies on the communal TV monitors met with our disapproval and we asked the kids to keep listening to their music and avert there eyes. The journey south from Lima showed us just what a desert area this coastal strip is: huge sand dunes, arid plains and the occasional palm or cactus. There is no motorway to speak off, just a wide single lanes carriageway which meant lots of hairy overtaking in our big bus.... read more

We were all rather pleased to dump our backs and crash into our beds, half a day sat on a plane is enough to get us all in need of recovery. Breakfast in the hotel went down a treat with pancakes and maple syrup getting a big thumbs up. Dragon fruit was tried by all and we also tried a fruit called a praca which looked like a massive runner bean and had banana-ish fleshy seed pods. I had four little prezzies which will be brilliant for this trip: Jacks, Dobble cards, Pass the Pigs and a highly recommended card game called Back Packets. No power or water in the hotel this morning, so we headed straight out to the beach road. Lima is shrouded in a lot of sea fog by all accounts and we ... read more
