As we ate breakfast on the roof terrace, the clouds lifted and were saw the massive snow capped peaks of the Himalayas. Quite something as we washed down some breakfast curry and chapatis. Our first morning call was to move white water rafting for tomorrow. Then we hired a large wooden canoe and paddled across the lake to take the stone steps up to the World Peace Pagoda. It was a great walk and quite strenuous; there was shade, great views and a little homestead cafe halfway up where we stopped for lunch and a game of cards on the way back down. It was warm and humid and we consumed a great quantity of water between us all. The kids told each other scary stories as they went up and down and, as a result, ... read more

We were all up bright and breezy got our bus. Cas, Bob, Ed and Hat caught a taxi and Tom and I walked to the bus station. Well, station is not an accurate description; imagine a street with 15 coaches parked up on the left hand side. Cas had bought some delicious Masala Tea from a girl about Hat's age. It was sweet and spiced with ginger, cardamom, cloves and pepper. The bus left on time at 7.00 and by 8.00 I was Mr Bakery and handing out jam donuts, croissants and apple strudel turnovers that Bob and I had picked up during our stroll together. Some of the roads leaving Kathmandu are in very bad condition and this, coupled with the stream of heavy lorries bringing goods in from India, made the first three miles ... read more

Just next door to our hotel was a barbers and I'd promised Bob and Tom that I'd take them for a proper cut throat razor shave when we were in Kathmandu. It was very good and the head massage we got at the end was very relaxing (Tom almost went to sleep). Everyone had a bit of downtime, so Bob and I went for a stroll. I bought a jungle Kukkri and we shared a couple of beers on a roof terrace bar which was great. We went to a traditional Nepali meal at Thamel House. Tom was feeling jet lagged, so he didn't stay long and went back to the hotel to get some kip. The food was great and Hat loved the Nepali dancers that did a few routines.... read more

Down (Old) Town We used a walking route in our guide book to take us from Thamel to Durbar Square. We took in many Hindu temples including one dedicated to the God of Toothache. The route took us away from the backpackers haven of Thamel and showed us more of the authentic Kathmandu. The chowks (squares) were full of people selling fruit and veg, dried fish and spices and it was busy and noisy. Alleys of brass good and kitchen equipment stalls gave an Aladdin's cave effect. At Durbar square we hired a guide to take us around the old Royal palace, some of which had been destroyed by the earthquake. The carvings were very intricate and Shiva and Kalli were prominent throughout. It was time for a break afterwards and we found a coffee and ... read more

Ed and I took a taxi to the airport and we waited besides the many taxi drivers who were waiting with names on boards. Ed held his poster up to attract their attention. It was great to see them coming through the arrivals door as its felt a long time since we last saw them back in late Feb. They were a little tired and the travelling went smoothly. In fact, they relished the freedom of making the journey under their own speed. Cas and Hat were waiting for us outside the hotel with Hat's colourful poster. After settling them into their room, the three chaos together, we took them on a brief walk around Thamel, the smell of joss sticks thick in the air, and had a beer in a Mexican bar. Our dinner was ... read more

We spent the morning wandering the alleys and streets of Thamel. Occasionally stopping in one of the many organic coffee shops (a throw back to the hippy visitors in the 1960's and 70's. Ed was particularly interested in a waterproof North Face bag/rucksack for when he starts secondary school in Seotember. We bought some A3 handmade paper, the only paper we could find, so that Ed and Hat could make 'Bob and Tom' welcome posters. To escape the noise we walked to the Garden of Dreams. A walled garden created in the 1920's, it was a oasis of calm and the crazy to-ing and fro-ing on the other side of the wall seemed a long way away. Ed and Hat enjoyed the freedom and, after walking around the grounds and Lily pond, Cas and I retired ... read more

The visas at Kathmandu were very smooth and we were through to the taxis within half an hour of landing. Cas had arranged a taxi via the guest and the journey to Thamel district gave an insight into Kathmandu life: chaotic, energetic, noisy, colourful, run down. There were bits and pieces of rebuilding damage still being done following the earthquake in April 2015. It turns out that the houses that fell were made with bricks stuck together with mud. The guest house, De Veda, was along a small alleyway and we'd booked two rooms with three beds apiece. Cas was not too pleased with the hotel as it was a bit shabby, but we decided to stick with it in the end. There was no aircon or lights until 6.30pm as there are severe electrical shortages, ... read more

Asia May 26th 2016

We woke early, well, we tried to wake early but we all struggled to get out of bed. I found it difficult as Ed had been fiddling with his bedside alarm last night and sure enough, it went off at 2.19am... Cas chose a western friendly hotel to help with the language and Hotel Grand Park did the job. We spent most of the morning in Green Park which is a large open space in the heart of Kunming. The Pool of Nine Dragons was where much of Kunming's population used to come to collect their drinking water. It was drizzling as we strolled around and people looked at us curiously as we were a) dressed in shorts and flip flops to their raincoats and b) we had two children and it was forbidden to have ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Kunming May 25th 2016

They used the same phrase about Britain 150 years ago and China has taken this mantle some 25 years or more. I'd never stopped to think about the implications of this statement and it was portrayed very clearly as the plane came down. - Where do all the workers live? We saw flocks of 10 story flats. - Where does all the food come from to feed the workers? The land was covered in agricultural plastic on a scale that was almost too large to believe. - How do the workers cook, warm and wash themselves? We saw enormous trains pulling huge numbers of wagons laden with coal. - And where does all the material come from to build the workers houses, roads and factories? There were massive tracts of land that had been gouged out ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane May 25th 2016

Last night we found another Laos BBQ place not far from the hotel. It was a busy place and we were the only westerners there. Ed was feeling about off colour so he only had a few bits of pork. They played games near a very rob irate mirrored shrine whilst Cas and I ate the soup and fresh veg which was very fresh and delicious. It's the first time that I've had beer served with ice. We turned the lights off to settle the kids when there was knock at the door with an additional bed, making four in total, and it meant that Ed and Hat wouldn't disturb each other. We rose late and skipped the hotel breakfast which was pretty poor. Instead, we headed to the Cafe Benito again for very Parisian croissants ... read more
