July 16th, 2013. 10:00pm Left motel in Dodge City, KS. @ 7:30am. Our destination was Walsenburg, CO. 282 miles. Our total miles so far, a week into the trip, is 2065 miles. We finally left Dodge City @ 8:00am after looking for a radiator repair shop to repair leak and none to be found that was open. The leak kept getting worse and a gallon of water had to be added after every 25-30 miles. We were getting desperate and knew we had to find a radiator shop when we got to Garden City, KS. We went right to Jake's Radiator shop which we'd found on line only to find him closed. We called his number and got the answering machine, meanwhile a man walked up to us, saying he followed us to talk to us ... read more

July 15th, 2013. 7:57pm On Sunday July 14th, 2013 we left our motel in West Plains, MO. @6:20am. Our destination was Sedan, KS. 293 miles. It was a very hot day for travel. Since a leak had developed in radiator, it first was thought to be due to temperature and pushing coolant out overflow tube. Leak has progressively gotten worse. I decided to put an overflow tank on the car, hoping it would solve the problem. At a gas stop in Mt Vernon, MO., a man came to look at the car. When I told him about the leak getting worse, he worked in a radiator shop and he found that the leak was running down the outside of the overflow tube. We continued on to Sedan, where we spent the night with Jim & Ruby ... read more

July 13th, 2013 10:19pm Today our day was to cover 237 miles from Harrisburg, IL. to Alton, MO. We left our motel in Harrisburg, IL. @ 8:00am expecting it to be a shorter day. Our first stop was at Taylor Farms in Vienna, IL. after spying a Model AA Truck in a shed. We just had to stop and take a picture for our Model A friends. The owners came out to talk. (our day started getting longer) We had a good day for traveling, the weather and road conditions were good. We arrived at our motel at 3:15pm to find our room had been given to someone else. We were able to get reservations 32 miles farther along in West Plains, MO. making our day 269 miles. Had to add coolant to radiator today. Got ... read more

July 12th, 2013 10:18 pm CDT We are getting feed back that entries and photos can't be found. Mae & I are still learning how to save and post on the blog, I found that some entries were still in the saved box and not published. I went into the blog site like anyone following our trip would and every entry was there. The first 10 photos are there, yesterday's photos should post by 7/13/2013. Day 3 started out on the cool side, we had sunshine all day, the high being in the low 80's. It was a beautiful day for traveling through the mountains of WV & KY. We were glad to see the flat lands of western KY & IL. Today's travel covered 367 miles, starting out from West Liberty, KY. and ending in ... read more

July 11, 2013 9:30pm Another day in, 298 miles traveled. We spent the day driving the beautiful hills and curves of West Va. There was only one problem which was of our own choosing. We decided to try to drive 106 miles to our next gas stop on 6 gallons of gas ( because we ran out of gas 1st day it threw our scheduled gas stops off), we did ok until we were down to 4 gallons in tank, we encountered a 5 gallon hill. We sputtered up this mountain Mae said, "stop and put the 3 gallons of gas in tank now". Because I like challenges, I said, " let's keep going ", as we only had 19 miles to gas stop. We made several more small mountains and then another 3 gallon mountain ... read more

July 10th, 2013 Today our trip started. We left @ 6:20am arrived in Elkins, WV @ 6:00pm. The day started out with a send off by son Dennis, grandson Austin and a friend Hoppy Hoy. Our granddaughter made a sign for the back of our car "PA to California or bust". The car ran super until the unexpected happened, we ran out of gas 121.4 miles into the trip (12.77 mpg), The car always gets 20 mpg. A trucker stopped, he volunteered to drive his rig one mile to gas station and fill our gas can and drive back to us, air gas mixture adjustment was 1/4 turn too rich. Next tank of gas was run with air gas mixture turned 1/4 turn leaner, result was 18.9 mpg, car ran very good. Next encounter was a ... read more

It's been a week since last entry. Again with Ernie Spittler leading the way, progress has been made. The 1913 T has not been pulling very good on the hills. The one change I made since last year was, I had the E-Timer reprogrammed to a new curve as a result of a Dino test. It was to help pull hills better. I just installed the newly adjusted E-Timer, results were it was not as good pulling hills as before. Ernie said the timing has to be rechecked. This made some difference but did not solve the pulling problem. After changing plugs and carb., Ernie decided to take a straight thru carb. off one of his T's he knew was good. A straight thru carb. has more air flow thru it and I think it requires ... read more

June 30th, 2013 Just got home from Church. I am now using our IPad which we have to learn how to use the Apple system. At almost 76 years old, this new technology is a challenge. To practice entering to our blog, I will give a little background about my wife and me. It all started in 1954 at the end of 10th grade. I was held back in 7th grade because of being in the hospital and missed the last 3 months of school. My wife went to a country school and was put ahead a grade. Then the country schools only had 8 grades so we ended up in the same class. We started dating by the end of 10th grade. Here is where the old cars started as I had a 1931 Model ... read more

June 28th, 2013 Got to bed too late tonight (12:30am) and got up @ 5:19am because a man was here at my son's machine shop to pick up a part they needed as the shop is closed next week. not much progress was made today in getting the 1913 T ready for the trip. Another guy (Randy) stopped by to pick up a repair job. I asked him to look at mounting the license plate since the McLaren wire wheel mounted on the spare tire carrier interfered with the tail light & license plate. I showed him how the light & license plate bracket is mounted, he said just turn the mounting bracket around, it placed the license plate in a perfect spot, problem solved. Ernie came again today and adjusted the Rocky Mt Brakes (new ... read more

June 27th, 2013 Getting ready for the Canyonland IV MTFCI Tour, in Kanab, Ut. I'm a last minute kind of a guy, so I have until July 9th,2013 to get our 1913 Model T Ford ready for 7,000 to 8,000 mile round trip. I guess some of us work better under pressure. Checked the rear axle bearing sleeves for starters and found the axles were from the bad batch unheat treated axle shafts about 4-5 years ago. I called in my main Model T mechanic, Ernie Spittler and the Ruxtell rear had to be completely disassembled to replace the 2 axles & the 2 bearing sleeves. Working parts of 3 days the Ruxtell rear is together and back under car. The Rocky Mt brake lining had to be replaced, last year I bought a brake lining, riveting ... read more
