We only had a short drive to get to Kim’s. By being at Dave and Bonnie’s, we cut our drive by at least 45 minutes. Since we had filled with water, and dumped the sewer at Lodge’s, we traveled ready to park for almost a week. Kim was working from home that day and was on a conference call when we arrived. Once the call ended, we had time to hug and catch up. To our dismay, Kim had a cold and sounded stuffy. So we opted to stay around the house and not go running out to stores except for essentials. On Wednesday we relaxed and then went in to Shephardstown to see Kim’s new office. She had competed and gotten a new job 6 months ago and this was our first chance to see ... read more

Well, after being home a scant 2 weeks, we hit the road again to see more friends and family, only this time heading north. In the short time we were home we: had some dermatological surgery for John, MRI for Trish's knee, brakes repaired on the RV, heat pump installed for the house, and doctor's visit and shot in the knee for Trish. No wonder we wanted to get back on the road. But heading NORTH in October? We left on October 19 in the rain and drove to Bedford, VA to see a former roommate of Trish's, Dee Thorn. We had visited Dee and Al before at their beautiful log home overlooking the Peaks of Otter in the Shenandoah Valley. Dee and her husband Al had retired to VA after living and working for years ... read more

We left Inverness and headed for Mexico Beach. We followed familiar routes on US 19 (as a kid, this was THE main route to St Petersburg) and found the road devoid of heavy trucks and a peaceful, easy way to go. In Perry we grabbed fuel, lunch, and groceries and followed the "forgotten coast" along the Gulf to Mexico Beach. This is a beautiful route and well worth taking time to savor the views, the shopping and the food. We got to Mexico Beach and to the Rustic Sands Campground, found a site, and set up. This was our third visit and we felt like old-timers, very comfortable with the campground and the area. The tall trees, both oak and pine, gave shade and yet there were open areas where the sun came through and warmed ... read more

We left Jacksonville and headed for Daytona Beach to see our friend Carol (Howk) Lockwood. Carol was the HR Director when we were in Japan in 2000 and we had worked a number of projects together. She returned in 2001 to the Navy Annex and after surviving 9-11, decided to retire and move to her condo in FL. We had visited her there later that year and several other times. She met a wonderful man, Chuck Lockwood, retired Air Force, and they married. We saw that they were very happy. Carol and Chuck had come to VA a few years ago and we met them at the Air and Space Museum in Dulles. Unfortunately, Chuck passed away a month earlier and we did not get down in time to say good-by or be with Carol. So ... read more

We decided to take a leisurely southerly swing to visit friends and family in Alabama and Florida. As mentioned in an earlier blog, my former boss, Ellen, and her husband Dennis, had retired to Double Springs, Alabama, in the northwestern part of the state. They were a prime influence on our decision to retire in AL and we have enjoyed visiting them on several occasions. I had finally gotten an appointment with a dermatologist for mid-September and we suggested since the doctor was in Cullman, about half way between us, that they could meet us for lunch after my appointment. Ellen countered with "Why not come spend a few days here before the appointment?" That was not a difficult decision to make, as we had stayed previously in June and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So we packed ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Orange Park September 16th 2011

After a restful night in the county park in Albany, we got an early start heading towards Jacksonville to see the kids. We took US 82 across GA and it is a wonderful fast, easy road with a few small towns but good fuel and food opportunities. It's 4 lane in many spots and much better and easier on the nerves (and gas mileage) than an interstate. We noticed we kept hitting bugs and soon the windshield was getting spotted. Turns out is was Love-Bug mating season (No, not the VWs, little bugs like fireflies) and they were everywhere. Turns out the female is the larger and the male "attaches" himself but is facing backward. Then in a fit of passion (?) or something, the female takes off, pulling the poor male along. If he flaps ... read more

Kim has wanted to come down since before we moved. She had seen pictures, heard stories and really hoped to see our new home in Alabama. But when I retired, Kim got a new job (still with the government and in WV) at about the same time and had been working hard to learn new skills. She and Trish are best of friends as well as mother and daughter so it's been hard on both. Then add to the mix, Kris (Kim's significant other) started back to school for advanced degree and is just getting his Healing Arts Center going, so it was going to be hard for him as well. Finally, after a lot of, well--whining--from mother, Kim found a long weekend when she could get reasonably priced plane tickets and she made plans to ... read more

I realize I have previously explained where we retired and when, but I keep getting asked WHY? (Not as in why did you retire—duh—but as in why Alabama?) Every time we are introduced or meet someone here in Alabama, they ask, often with a touch of incredulity, “You mean, you actually wanted to move here?!” So I thought, now that we have been here for almost 3 full months, I’d try to explain. First, I began to seriously consider where to retire back in 2000. We have always lived east of the Mississippi and in the north: Ohio, NH, NY, MA, WV, and VA. So it would be logical to presume that would be our choice. Weather is a factor and though we both loved the snow, went cross country skiing, and knew how to cook ... read more

EDITORIAL NOTE: I started this blog in early June when we got back from Florida. However, we have 2 A/Cs for the hours--one for downstairs and one for up. The upstairs had been having fits and finally crapped out. So working on this on the computer was difficult. The temperature upstairs in the den was mid-80s by 9am and up to 90 by 11am. I tried to work through including putting away books and files, but it was too much. So this story is a bit late and unfortunately, due to advanced age, I've forgotten a lot of the details. The most important thing is: Drew is growing and we had a great time as a family (sans Kris) with our kids. Good news is, A/C should be fixed in a few weeks, once parts come ... read more

OK, we got the goods and said, "Yea!" But the truth was, we really couldn't set up. The tornadoes had caused problems, not the least was lack of power for a week, and our contractor couldn't work on putting in the floors. Then, when power came back, he had several people who had suffered damage and needed immediate relief and assistance. Of course, that should come first. So we putzed and tinkered, trying to put dishes in the kitchen, clean shelves in cupboards, and straighten the garage. Remember, we could do nothing in the bedroom or living room because the floor wasn't in yet, and the upstairs floors were also just in plywood. Trish worked in the kitchen and I went to the garage, sorting, moving, and arranging. One of the first orders was to put ... read more
