Santorini is a long way from Crete!! Travel arrangements were as follows:- (Organised via Spirdon Tourist Services with Candia) We got up at 5.30am, coach was supposed to pick us up at 6.30am but was 1/2hr late! We had to stop in Bali (Yes - Bali!!) to wait 10mins for some other people to be dropped off by minibus and then arrived in Heraklion about 8.30am. Picked up our tickets and boarded the FastCat4 catamaran. It left at 9.30am and we got to Santorini at about 11.30am. Half hour drive or so to Oia, where we avoided having lunch at the Guides recommended restaurant, and had an hour and a half to explore Oia. Lovely picturesque village clinging to the hillside with its iconic blue domes (earthquake-proof) and many churches ).Then ½ drive back to the ... read more

Europe » Greece » Crete » Rethymno May 10th 2015

We caught the bus from the local Bus Station (6 euros each person, each way) and went to Chania! It took about an hour but very pleasant journey running along the coast! Chania was massive!! I had imagined a small walled village but it was an enormous town with two rows of fortifications and a huge Venetian Harbour! Wandered down from the bus station, through the narrow touristy streets, past the old walls, down to the harbour. The dockyards originally contained 17 Neoria’s built in 1599 (storage sheds!) but only five were now left. Walked out to 16th C lighthouse, for views of the harbour and the snow-capped mountains and then back along to the Giali Tzamisi mosque built in the 17thand the ‘Firka’ Fortress on the Northwest side of the port. Spent ages watching an ... read more

We stayed at the Cambridge Hotel in Horley the night before we flew as our flight was at 8.15am. The flight was delayed by 2 hours as the windscreen wipers on the plane were broken and as it was drizzly rain in Gatwick, they couldn’t see to take off!! So after taxing down to the runway for take-off – we then had to taxi back to the stand where the little problem was fixed! We then had to wait for more fuel (due to all the taxing around!!) before waiting for another slot for take-off!! Anyway, he made up time flying and we arrived in Crete about 3.00pm. An hour and a half transfer to Rethymnon and onto our Hotel Astali in the town. The hotel is run by a very friendly Mother with her two ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Alhaurin el Grande February 16th 2015

We arrived in Spain on Friday 16thJanuary to wonderfully warm, sunny weather – that lasted until the Sunday when it rained all day and the temperature dropped down to 10c through the days and 4c at night! Cold!!! The rain also brought snow to a lot of Spain and when the good weather returned on the following Wednesday we were treated to beautiful clear views of the valley, ringed with the snow topped mountains! Lots of good walks planned and Chris did a 17km walk up to Pico Alcaparain @ (1293 metres (approx. 4,000’). Plenty of scary, vertigo moments on the walk apparently, so glad I didn’t do it!! There was also a walk (in the misty rain!!) at the Montes de Malaga so unfortunately there weren’t many views but a fantastic meal afterwards at the ... read more

We had a good deal to Budapest, that included flights, 3 nights at Hotel Gold, 48hr hop on hop off bus (Big Bus Tours 7000 HUF per adult) that also included a 2hr boat trip on the Danube and an hours night bus tour. We weren’t expecting too much but were pleasantly surprised! We had arranged transfers through the Hotel Gold (8500 HUF or 30 euros) who were duly at the airport with a board and a 30 minute taxi drive, took us over the Elizabeth bridge onto the Buda side of the river and to our hotel at the top of the hill! It was quite a luxurious (for us!!) lovely room, double sized shower, flat screen tv sunk into the wall – all very pleasant – even the Italian restaurant underneath did superb food! ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Barbados December 22nd 2014

Our final port of call and as there seemed to be quite a lot on the island we decided to rent a car for the day and share with another couple, Matt and Sheila from the ship. It cost US$ 125 including the petrol, insurance and licence so was a relatively cheap way of seeing the island. Eventually managed to find our way out of Bridgetown (Matt turned out to be an excellent map reader!!) and headed past St Ann’s Fort to Oistins, where we had a stop and a wander around the fish market watching the ladies prepare the flying fish for Friday nights fry up! Our next stop was Crane Beach for a photo stop of the two coves and cliffs. On to East Point Lighthouse that turned out to be a rusty old ... read more

This looked quite a flat island in comparison to a lot of the other islands we had visited, but is well renowned for its sea life, so we disembarked the ship and went to Spice Beach (us$ 2.50) Arrived early enough to get a sun bed and an umbrella and Chris hired the snorkel gear (US$10) and for me a huge yellow float with a viewing place for your head! (US$15.00 for ½ hr) It was totally amazing! You only had to walk out a few feet and then there was a shelf which is where most of the fish swam up and down, The half hour went quite quickly just watching the fish – so many shapes. colours and sizes! At lunchtime we took a taxi (US$20) to Lac Bai passing the salt flats in ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Curaçao December 22nd 2014

Colourful Curacao ( Its name is thought to be derived from Corazon - Spanish forheart or Curacao – Portuguese for heart) and its Capital Willemstad is completely delightful, with its distinct Dutch influence of 17thCentury gabled houses in wild pastel shades ! We decided to try and have a couple of hours on a beach before exploring the capital Willemstad so after rejecting the tours and the taxi’s we ended up at the bus station, that was on the first roundabout outside the Port. We wanted to get to St Michaels Point and caught the 9.30am 8b bus and got off 20 minutes later at a closed up seaside village! There was nothing there at all, except a small fort and a wonderful little beach – all the bars and shops appeared to be shut up! ... read more

Another day, another island! Quite a lot of islands actually as Tortola belongs to the British Virgin islands! Fifty or so islands, most with weird names such as Salt, Norman, Jost Van Dyke, Guana, Fallen Jerusalem, Dead Chest, Virgin Gorda......I could go on!! Local belief is that when Christopher Columbus discovered the islands in 1493, he named them after the 11,000 virgins of the 4thCentury martyr, St Ursula! This was our first experience of a Tender to reach land, so we had to wait until all the P & O trip passengers had disembarked before we could get ashore. Reached Tortola by about 10.00am and boarded an open sided trolley for a tour of the island, followed by the beach! We ended up with the ‘Friendliest Driver’ whose vehicle was pretty clapped out and as there ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Saint Martin December 13th 2014

Chris’ Birthday!!! St Maartens is the smallest island in the world inhabited by two countries and it was divided in 1648! Docked at 8.00am and off the ship by 9.00am! We had decided to hire a car for the day (US$85) so picked up the first one we came across outside the Port area and headed off towards Dawn Beach and Orient Bay. Somehow managed to get lost, but we did nearly run over a couple of huge iguanas, stopped and discovered a pond with about 30 or so iguanas hanging around!! Ended up back on the main road, masses of white butterflies about (looked like snow!!) and headed on north, crossing over into the French side of the island! Stopped at Baie de L’Embouchure (I think!) and climbed up to the whale watching platform to ... read more
