Tuesday 25thApril 2017 Page to Panguitch 194 miles Left Page about 8.15am and crossed the Utah border 10 minutes later so it then became 9.25am! Parked up on Hwy 89 just after Mile 19 to do the Toadstool walk! Lovely to see all the spring flowers and the trail wended its way up wards towards the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument following the route of a water course, until we reached the plateau. Had a wander around the ‘toadstools’ and then back in the car for the fairly boring drive to Zion NP. Zion National Park is a little oasis amongst the desert – well, it’s actually a BIG oasis amongst the desert! Its so vast and the few hours we had to explore just wasn’t going to be enough. The drive down through the gorge is ... read more

Sunday 23rdApril 2017 Blanding to Page 215 miles We left Blanding about 8.15 hoping to make good time to Monument Valley and be there by 10.00am! Wasn’t too bad – only stopped once at Mexican Hat for photos of a rock that looked like a Mexican wearing a hat, hence why the town got its name! I say town – it was just a few houses really! Entered Monument Valley ( owned by the Navajo Indian Tribe) parked up, signed in for the Wildcat Trail and set off on a 2 ½ hr trail around West Mitten Bute. It was a lovely walk across a desert trail, with loads of wild flowers, a few birds and sheep spotted high up on the Butte. The temperature was perfect – about 70 degrees, cool air and sunshine! Got ... read more

21st April Grand Junction to Monticello 213miles Today we crossed the border into Utah! We left Grand junction just after 7.30am and turned off the !70 about 10.00am to take the 128 to Moab. Pretty flat to start with and then we saw the Colorado River and the start of a gorge. Very dramatic scenery, with the sun shining on the rocks and reflecting in the Colorado river to make it look muddy. Well – perhaps it was muddy!! Didn’t get to Arches National Park until about 11.30am, joined the queue of traffic, and then entered the park by climbing up the steep hill with views over the Moab Fault line and valley! Amazing rocks and colours, plenty of arches to be seen and just a wonderful day doing the short trails to some of the ... read more

It took us 26.5hrs to get to Denver!! We got up at 4.00am 17th April and arrived in Denver about 11.30pm which was the equivalent of 6.30am 18th April in the UK. First Day Denver 232 miles Crashed out and got the car the next morning and headed for Morrison ( a place recommended by our hotel receptionist) Quite busy along the IS70 but as we headed out of the town we saw our first ‘Point of Interest’ – Dinosaur Ridge. Decided we weren’t up for hiking the ridge (especially as there are snakes about!) and took the Guided Tour Bus instead with a very knowledgeable geologist! We drove up a road where he explained that Denver used to be sea and that the rocks around were the old sea bed, showing us the ripples, and ... read more

SPAIN We eventually got to Spain on March 27th 2017 after most of the renovation work was done on the bungalow. The builders were going to finish it off whilst we were away……but that’s another story!! Its still an ongoing project but it’s progressing nicely…….. We arrived in Spain late at night and had to unpack and re-pack as we were going on the Field Clubs walking holiday to Andalujar – north of Jaen, at 7.00am the next day! We had some wonderful walks, with loads of wild lavender, reflections in lakes and spring flowers everywhere including orchids and fratilliaries. The highlight of the holiday was a walk starting at the Basilica Sanctuario Virgen de la Cabeza, a massive shrine, used as a refuge in the Spanish Civil War, and according to legend, the image of ... read more

Chris’ Birthday – Virgen de los Rondeles, Casarabonela, Spain Arrived in Gatwick from USA 10.30am, and after a change over of suitcases, from cruise luggage, to hand luggage at the IBIS hotel, and also a change of Terminal from South to North, we caught the 16.45 flight to Malaga. Quick overnight stay in the house before driving the 35 minutes to Casarabonela. Duly found Maria (In the bar opposite the Ayuntamiento) who then showed us three apartments, all very nice, for us to choose one. It was a no-brainer really, as the third apartment overlooked the main square, which, apparently, the festival was taking place in. Had a wander around the town, looking at the Xmas decorations - there was a children’s band marching and playing these weird drums, with a hole in the middle and ... read more

Cartagena, Columbia and Florida, USA Up early again, as we were told that sailing into Cartagena (founded in 1533) was quite spectacular, looking at the forts. It was ok – not worth getting up at 6.30am for – but we did have a very clear view of the giant skyscrapers. (Not a fort to be seen!!) Off the ship by 9.00am and shared a taxi with some other people ($5 each) into the Old Town! (lots of traffic as 4 cruise ships today!) Very pleasant and colourful place to wander around with its large squares, old churches and sanctuaries, colonial houses, balconied flowered windows, ladies dressed in colourful outfits selling stuff. Didn’t manage to find St Teresa’s Square which is where a free walking tour started at 10.00am, but did find the Old City Walls that ... read more

Panama Canal This was the highlight of the trip and it had certainly been hyped up into ‘The Canal Experience’! We had had a lecture every day, on sea days, by Bill Fall, who was excellent and certainly knew his stuff. I never knew a Canal could be so complicated!! Basically it was started by the French in 1880 – 26,000 of them died due to Malaria and the project was then abandoned. America took it on again in 1903, removing over 200 million cubic metres of material and it was completed in 1914, so is now 102 years old. Amazing feat of engineering all those years ago when you think that they didn’t have any vehicles or machinery. It is 48 miles, or 80 kms long and strangely the Atlantic Ocean is 9” lower than ... read more

Puerto Quezetal, Guatemala The average age of people living in Guatemala is 20 years old! I was shocked……….- hard to believe. Where have all the old people gone?? We were also told that there was nothing around the Port but Antigua, 50 miles away, was the place to go, so we booked a cruise coach trip to get us there and back. Antigua is surrounded by three volcanoes – two of them active, Fuego (last eruption 2012) and Acatenango with two named peaks. ( last eruption 1972) There are 37 volcanoes altogether in Guatemala – not sure how many are active – but at least two!! We duly waited for our trip to be called (about 10.15am) – Do it Yourself Antigua – basically we had just booked the coach there and back, oh and the ... read more

Blog – USA & Cruise – Central America It was supposed to be a relaxing journey, in the campervan, up to Gatwick with a pleasant Friday evening in an airport hotel – that was before the battery light came on when we reached Swindon and we decided to get off the M4 and call out the breakdown people. We didn’t fancy the Campervan not starting the following day when we needed to drive it to long term parking and catch the midday flight! Plenty of time to sort as it was only 10.30am. Breakdown people said they would be out in 1 hour (more like 1½ hours!) Confirmed we had a problem and followed him back to his depot, where it transpired that it was an alternator problem and there were none to be had in ... read more
