A new chapter is about to begin... We have landed two jobs. The first one is near Darwin. More specifically, a town called Batchelor, which is the gateway to Litchfield National Park. It is working at a resort and butterfly farm. We will be doing reception, reservations, kitchen and bar work. All food and accommodations is provided. And best of all, it counts as regional work towards my second year visa! :) Here are some links to check out the resort and the park: http://www.butterflyfarm.net/ http://www.nt.gov.au/nreta/parks/find/litchfield.html The second job, is working at a secluded resort on a small island in Malaysia. Yes, for real. Mainly doing barwork. Again, food and accommodations is included, but the pay is very minimal. It appears to be a great and unique experience, but the downside is that it would use ... read more

So...finally, an update for you guys. A lot has happened over the course of the last week. I have taken a job at a hotel in the outback. It is called The Leichhardt Hotel in Conclurry. The nearest major center to here is Mt. Isa, which is a good hour or more away. Really, that "major" center is only a city of 23,000 people. Haha! Oh, and you should also note that I am in one of the hottest places in Australia. It gets into the 40 degree mark here on a regular basis. YUCK!!! I came here with my English friend Rachael. It will be a very, very different experience than any of the others I have had thus far, and a major shock to the system after spending so much time in a big ... read more

Hello Everybody! My apologies for the lack of updating I have been doing lately. It was beginning to feel like I didn't have much new to say as I have been in Brisbane for so long now. But, here it goes anyway: Christmas was actually very nice. Myself and 6 of my housemates went camping in Noosa for 3 days. It was gorgeous! The beach was incredible, I can't believe how quickly you begin to miss the ocean. The weather was great and we had an amazing barbecue for Christmas dinner. When we got back home (to the hostel) we had an extended party for the next week, running right into New Years Eve. We had some new people come around for a few days, some really awesome German guys that are friends of a friend. ... read more

So...I am officially a working girl! Still in Brisbane. I started on Wednesday in a call centre. Phil, who is an English "bloke" I live with hooked me up with this job, which was really nice of him. That said, it was the worst day of my life work-wise, but I was more than willing to do it if it meant I can stay in Australia! The upside? It pays $21/hr. More good news? I got promoted on my second day, so I am off the phones. Hooray! I am now the Admin Assistant to the Manager. How's that for climbing the corporate ladder in a hurry? Haha! It's pretty sweet though. 11 AM - 7 PM, Mon - Fri, with an occasional short Saturday shift. Pretty good really. As of now, the plan is to ... read more

OK, so I have been slacking off on updating you guys, my apologies. I went from Brisbane to Maroochydore. I am going to be honest, I didn't see a whole lot other than the beach and my hostel there. However, I DID meet some FANTASTIC people. As of late, it seems everyone I meet is from England, but they have all been really great. Anyway, I got called for a job interview in Brisbane, so I headed back down South. I still don't know anything for certain, but am starting to apply for jobs all over the country...it's very hard when you don't have a lot of money and you are willing to take anything, but it may be nowhere near you. Today is Monday, and I am planning to leave Brisbane again on Wednesday (I've ... read more

My apologies for slacking off on keeping this up to date. Sometimes it's hard to find a connection and sometimes it's tough to find the time. Anyway, here's an update: Lennox Head - was INCREDIBLE! It is a fairly small town, but has an amazing beach and view of the ocean. When you cross the street from said beach, you come to a lake. The lake is surrounded by tea trees and the water is actually a reddish colour. It was amazing! The water felt so nice on your skin. Byron Bay - we just took a day trip (shuttled in by our hostel) to Byron Bay. The timing is really bad for going to some of these locations because right now is "schoolies". What this is, is basically spring break in Australia. All of the ... read more

So, I met a lovely girl named Simona (from Slovenia) while I was in Coffs Harbour. Her and I decided to travel this next little let together, and today we arrived in Lennox Head. It's a few hours north of my last stop, and apparently has some of the world's best surfing. We are staying at a place called The Lennox Lodge, it is NOT your typical hostel, which is great. We are actually the only two staying in our room, which is a miracle. We have our own private living area, kitchen and bathroom, it's immaculate and refreshing. I have yet to explain hostel life to you guys, but let me tell you, it's not for your average traveller (a year is going to feel like a lifetime I think). My last hostel had probably ... read more

Today has been magic. Still had a rough night last night (health wise), but woke up and began a great day. I went for a walk to the grocery store, bought some fruit and ichiban to feed myself for the next couple of days and then went to the beach at the jetty. Went for swim, tanned a little, listened to some music and people watched. HEAVEN!!! I am gonna head back to the beach again in a bit, without a bag, (my shoulders and calves STILL hurt) because it's not even noon here yet. The whole day ahead. :) I miss you all lots already (is that sad?), but I know it will all be worthwhile. I love you guys. xoxo Heather... read more

BETTER DAYS ARE HERE So, Newcastle, honestly, a little (ok, a lot) boring. But, it was very pretty. And I have to say, it was the first moment I enjoyed my trip thus far. I woke up in my hostel, which I have quickly learned was quite nice by comparison to many, and had a quick shower, and was out the door by 6:00 am. I went for a beautiful walk, grabbed a fantastic cup of coffee, bought some fruit and sat and had breakfast with my ipod. It was heaven. It was a beautiful day all around (and again, I only kinda wanted to die. Haha! I then walked down to the beach and watched some cute boys surf. And then I thought "now this is what Australia is supposed to be like". :) Caught ... read more

OK...Day 2 was slightly better than Day 1, but I learned a valuable lesson. It was better, because I didn't feel like I wanted to die (at least not as much). Here is the lesson I learned: ALWAYS leave your gigantic backpack wherever you are staying while you go sightseeing. Whether you have to pay for it or not, it's worth it. I have now been here 4 days and I am still sore from one day (about 3 - 4 hours) of walking around Sydney with my horrendously heavy pack. Anyway, I saw the harbour, it was nice and all (I'll try and add pics later), but to me a city is still a city and they all seem more or less the same. After the walking and the pain and the sweating (all while ... read more
