The last day. Nothing planned. We tried to sleep in a little, despite the bell-ringing, that happens every day from 6:00 onward. It's to announce oneself to the hindu gods when entering a shrine. Took some time to properly stash our bags for the way back. Had breakfast, printed tickets, went out to buy the last few things we wanted .In my case, without much luck: The things I wanted most were: some new/extra packing cubes, a sleeping mask and maybe one well-fitting goretex / fishermanspants. No luck on any of those. Shop in, shop out. They're all the same here. There's your prototype 'the north fake' trekking shop, with all kinds of trekking clothes and accessoires. A hemp shop, with mostly backpacks. A Nepali/festival-kind of clothing store and shops for fabrics (yak, cashmere, pashima).rinse, repeat. ... read more
A typical trekking store. There are hundreds. And they all sell the same stuff

First of all: Kathmandu is in lonely planet's top-10 cities to see, for the newest edition, that came out, today... Which meant the pizza place, 'ice and fire' we had planned to go to tonight was way too crowded.. Back to Fren's kitchen, where we started our vacation. Yesterday, we walked the streets of Kathmandu again. Had an apple pie somewhere, but it was more like a complete meal than I thought the light snack we planned. Therefore we ended up eating late at a place we found to gave boardgames, the electric pagoda. We played Jenga a lot see this photo of my final creation :) During the day, we did something different: got a mountainbike and cycled trough all the little streets if Kathmandu and it's surroundings. Ended with a swim at the 'police ... read more

We went to the airport early (6:20), to go to Kathmandu and have a full day there. I write this post 15m after we were supposed to be in the air (7:55) and boarding has not even started. ... We were just invited to go trough security check. Nice and easy. Just roll your bag trough a scanner, walk trough a gate, ignore the beeping and answer two security questions: 'do you smoke?', 'do you have a knife?'. Feeling very secure about the fact that all our fellow pessengers are non-smokers, we proceed to wait at the gate. It's 8:24 and no yeti airplane in sight. Interesting is the low-tech standards here. To show flight info, someone with a remote turned on a smart TV somewhere and started chrome on it. Then used a mouse that ... read more

Did paragliding with 'sunrise-paragliding' today. After getting our bags to yet another hostel (pushkar), we went to the paraglide company, that got us up the sarangkot mountain. My phone sadly didn't charge overnight, so I had no photocamera. Anything you see here is simons work :). We took off from the point that we reached in an earlier hike and I immediadiately felt a bit nauseated. Motion sickness. I could hold out for a while, as the pilot of our tandem flight navigated us in mostly straight lines, after the initials twists and turns to get a couple of hundred meters above the mountain. We had a beautiful view of the mountain, the places we hiked to, before, and the town of pokhara and fewa lake. It was especially interesting to see all the little sparkles reflect ... read more

Tried to find some interesting places to go to, here, but it seems we exhausted them. Some interesting destinations that would cost us > 400 euros to reach would be rara lake in the west (multiple flights and a horse ride) Jomson (village, high in the mountains that you can reach by plane, when the wind is right), Bhutan (costs >250$/day), Tibet (hard to arrange, China) and india or china (weren't so interested) So instead, we opted for interesting local places: a hippie lodge for the night, canyoning the next day and paraglide the day after. The canyon turned out to be a bit of a letdown for its price. We paid 50$ for, what turned out to be a small scale abseil operation. We got their by taxi, walked the final bit (15-20m) and got ... read more

The final day had just a 1-h hike. After that, a 4h bus ride took me back to Pokhara. I have some video's, but this site won't let me upload them. Imagine 5 or six flower pots with fake flowers and a shrine on the dashboard. A very happy driver in a bouncy chair behind a big wheel, and a tall bus, to go trough rivers and stuff. The bus was very shaky and overtook other buses and vehicles where it could. Oftentimes just driving beside the crumbling asphalt, we finally saw after the first 2h. During that time, we just drove over cobbles, rocks and rivers. Hairpin turns and paths that you would not expect a bus to be able to make. The first part also had some nepali/indian music that was turned off when ... read more

The way down was deep. From ghorepani ('horse-water' ) to tadapani ('far-water') to ghandruk. A 1000m down, but first 45m up and more down. Probably about 2km down all together. This was by far the most beautiful part of the trek. Just check out all these sweet photos :) ... read more

Today, I woke up at 4:45 (or rather, 1ish, couldn't really sleep after that) and got out at 5:00. The objective: dawn at poon hill, 3210m. There was a whole slew of people. Lighting was not a problem, but the hike was 400m up up up! The results? See for yourself :) ... read more

Todo: * climb the planned 800m from today * climb 550m we had not climbed yesterday * start with a 3500-step stairs (269 stories) Going 'alone' with the guide enabled me to go full speed. Some bragging is in order: * Normal time to climb the stairs: 2.5h * guide's record time to climb the stairs: 1.5h * our time (to where the guide measures): 45m * our time to the total end of the stairs: 1h And the rest of the way to ghorepani took us about 4.5h Check out the nice photos! Oh and what I find incredible is the Porters. Those are the people that will carry your backpack for you. Porters have a whole pack on their back, consisting of multiple backpacks, sacks, weekend bags and sometimes even coffers. Where most people ... read more
