A strange day, without Mark. We went by car, 2 hours (40km) to burethani and from there walked the route at the bottom, to tikedhunga. Most of the road was still accessible by car, so not the most interesting road, but what a view! I'm going to do the hike days mostly in photos, so feast your eyes below :) The most interesting things: itenerary said 1000m up, bu Simon's knee was not so good and we stopped at the foot of a 3500 - step stairs, where the guide shared some wine and I had some nuts. The owners added a couple of tree tomatoes, that tasted surprisingly good. We hopped stones and played around near the waterfall close by after that. Simon, however, decided not to risk his knee, and go back (by car) the ... read more

Time to hike! But how? And where? We've been in contact with Bino, the manager of Shangri-la, who also has his travel company. We were looking for a short hike. And, for my friends that are not so well trained, an easy one. The initial trek that was offered, was a 5 day one, trekking 6h/day,for 50€/day. Not bad, but perhaps a bit much. We'd rather do one that is a bit shorter. Looking at other treks online, we found 2 3-day treks labeled 'easy' and 'intermediate. The second was to poon hill, which had great reviews and featured sunrise from the top of a 3200m hill. It seemed to be just a 1000 or so meter climb from the starting point. Perfect! We asked Bino to arrange that for us, but he said doing it ... read more

We planned to do paragliding today. A very popular activity here. The sky is always full. Because of clouds however, we changed our plans and instead hiked up the mountain to where they launch, at sarangkot. The hostel said that was a nice 2.5h hike. .. .. After 5 or six hours of hiking up and up and up, we reached the place where they launched the paragliders. Talked about going. Got the price down to 6000 (40€), but by then, the wind and thermals were not right anymore. Took the taxi down. The whole thing was almoat 900m up, according to Wikipedia. The most interesting part of the hike was at the start. Again, there was a dog that followed us up ('Robert'). We went and took the road less traveled. Trough rice paddies, trough ... read more

We rented 2 scooters today. Good price (800 each) Put too much fuel in (650 each), drove around town and to Mahindra cave+devis falls. Both are mostly a tourist trap, but if you go there with this expectation, it's fine. Had some trouble climbing the way up to the (Japanese sponsored) world Peace pagoda. The scooter gave out halfway and would not restart. In the end, we asked someone passing by on a motorcycle. He found a manual Kickstart option and operated it, while his wife handled gas and clutch. One minute later a very happy me rode onward into the sunset :p After retrying the hill via another road that is. Overcoming a rainstorm and a 10m stair-walk/run, I arrived exactly early enough to see the place in the right light and sunset.... read more

We got to pokhara by bus again. It's not the most comfortable way to spend your vacation. Another 9 or so bumpy hours later, we turned into the pokhara bus station. Had an interesting conversation with an Austrian lady, that was doing anthropological research here, about the effectiveness of local medicine practices. She had great trouble getting them to be specific about their trade, treating her like a tourist, even if she spoke Nepali to them. She stayed in Nepal for 10 years in the 80/90s. Apparently, Kathmandu used to have asphalt before the earthquake. Also, there is a huge chance of a bigger earthquake happening soonish. Indicator for that was on 9.3/10 if I remember correctly. (9.7 otherwise). She was also a disaster relief manager and had all released vant permits and paperwork, to set ... read more

We spent the evening resting, booking the next place, in pokhara, and refilling headache medicine. At 20:30, we got to a restaurant. We chose one that is not so touristy. This one had, what was probably a family working around the building. It was a bit weird ordering: the waiter ran off after taking marks order and did completely other things until we called him over with the question if Simon and I could order as well. Then, without writing it down or telling it back, ran off again. After that, we waited for an hour or a bit more. We saw people from the restaurant go down to several of the shops further in the street and come back with small plastic bags with groceries. The food itself was amazing, however. I just was at ... read more

Nepal national park, chitwan, is about a 1000km2. We arrived at 7ish in the morning to collect our second guide (minimum) and let us be paddled downstream. The river was teeming with wildlife. Lots of birds, fish, crocodile and deers, on the side. After a few km, we disembarked.the guide started his explanation, about what we could encounter, what to do if rhino's get aggressive and about the behavior of the different animals. Halfway trough the explanation, however, a rhino was heard. We stopped everything and got our cameras out. (see below for photos) After a while we walked further, only to see that the road ahead is blocked, by probably the same rhino. We had to hide a bit until it passed. Moving on, there were some interesting edible plants, tracks, flowers, reeds and watering ... read more

Arrived in Sauraha, the city next to chitwan, halfway the afternoon. Despite the bumpy road, we were in pretty good condition, because of the airconditioning. And becausee of the relative quality of the roads outside of the capital too. The owner of 'Chillax Hostel' came with his Jeep, to pick us up. It's a bit crowded, with all us and the bags, but we were fine :). Upon arrival, some people helped us getting the bags to our cabin. We got the super-deluxe one, with airco, which was a whopping 6€ pppn. Super deluxe here is sort of a mud cabin, simple beds with mostly intact musquito-net-tents over them. some tiles, a bent fire-resistant door to the bathroom, that only closed when you lock it. Pink flower-tiles a leaky toilet with a bucket, loose sink, everything grimed ... read more

Left the hostel at six'ish and walked to the bus pickup point. There was a bus stop for three or so busses and every 10 seconds a new bus came and another took off. All with just Sanskrit texts on the front and a guy at the entrance that has a lot of money in his hands. He shouts the name of some places, people get in, pay him and the bus gets off. Yesterday, we found that the bus is about 700 roepies pp, but you have to call to make arrangements. In Nepalese. 'your hotel can do that', the site says. They did, but took almost 30% commission on it, without saying. Still, just a few euros :/ We had some time before 6:30, but couldn't see how we would recognize our bus. Asked ... read more

We walked for a couple of hours. Starting at the hotel, we followed a dirt path down. After only a few hundred meters, a dog started following us and would do so for the next 10 km. We soon had a name for him: Bob! And for a while, we also had the aptly-named 'Barky' and Mocha. Bob would have followed us till the end, making friends along the way. In the end, we decided not to betray Bob by taking a car off into the sunset without him. Instead, we shooed him off at a place with people and continued our journey. Up, this time, trough a forest. With nice views along the way. The end of the journey is at another temple. Nice, old, like a lot of others. The food nearby is good ... read more
