The room we had in Nuremberg was smokey and gave me allergies (I think). I woke up not feeling so hot. We packed and checked out and made our way back to the main part of town. We walked around, and there were a lot of booths set up selling food or things to buy (junk). I was wondering if it was a craft market. They were mostly set up in the HauptMarkt, which had another big church in it - The Church of Our Lady as well as the Big Beautiful Fountain (as said on my map). We decided to walk up to Kaiserburg Imperial Castle, which was up steep hills. On our way up we passed a man playing the saw. Awesome. We had our packs on, so getting up the hills was tough ... read more

We got up this morning, had some breakfast and then finished our packing, checked our e-mail and headed to the train station. We got there about an hour early, so we picked up some sandwiches for the train. While we were waiting for our track info, this guy in a surgical mask walked up to us and asked if we spoke English. He then was asking us where to buy tickets and proceeded to tell us he "was crazy," and wanted us to go with him to buy tickets. We figured he meant finding the ticket place was driving him crazy, but it worked in both ways. We explained where the tickets were, but wouldn't go with him. When we got on the train it seemed like all the seats were reserved (and it was crowded). ... read more

Today was a pretty low key day. We had breakfast and then set off to get things done. We booked a room in Nuremberg for tomorrow night, and figured out how to get to the main train station from our hotel. Also figured out that you buy tram tickets at newspaper shops! We booked our train tickets for tomorrow - you can catch whatever train leaving (we are going to try for the 1:06pm). Then Adam tried giving Dominik a call, but the pay phone ate up all his coin for only 20 seconds! We came back to the hotel and Adam used skype to get in touch with Dominik. We are driving out to his house on Thursday after we pick up our car. The sun was out again today, so we went for a ... read more

Today when we got up, it wasn't sunny. It was overcast. After some breakfast we got ready to walk up to the Old Town Square. It's another big square surrounded by buildings and filled with people and vendors. We saw the Astronomical clock on the old town hall. It's pretty crazy looking. Not only does it tell the time, but the zodiac, day, place of the sun, moon, etc. Every hour, on the hour, the four statues (representing the four vices) come to life by moving their heads, and the skeleton (death) rings a bell. Two doors open up and a parade of apostles goes by. At the end, a golden rooster comes out and crows - though it sounds pretty pathetic - I can see at the time all this was a big deal. It ... read more

So yesterday was our long day of travel. We got up at 5am, and left for the train station. Bruges has never been so empty! Our train to Brussels left at 5:58am, and was only an hour. Then we took a high speed train to Frankfurt. We had about 40 minutes between trains so we walked around the station a bit and ate some breakfast. Our B&B had packed us a nice breakfast to go. Our next train was also a high speed one to Dresden, which is near the border of Germany and the Czech Republic. I slept a little on that train ride (5 hours). We then had a more local train from Dresden to Prague. Most of the train ride was alongside a large river. It was really pretty. We got to Prague ... read more

Our last day in Belgium is almost done. We just finished packing so that when we get up at 5am we can do as little as possible. Today was full of downs and ups. We got up this morning, had a tasty breakfast and eventually made our way to the train station and caught the train to De Panne so that we could visit the De Struise Brewery. Everything went smoothly. We got to De Panne and started our 35 minute walk via Google Maps to the brewery address. We walked down city streets and Adam commented that the place was like a little beach town - lots of things were closed, there was a bowling alley and an amusement park (Plopsaland). About half way on our walk we turned and the road became a dirt ... read more

So today we got up at a good time again, had breakfast, and then I fell asleep again for a bit. We got ready to head to Liedekerke to go to Heeren Van Liedekercke, a much touted restaurant and bar (they have the Cantillon Crianza Helena). We got our train tickets and it took an hour to an hour and a half to get there. The place was about a twenty minute walk from the train station. The town was mostly residential and empty. It felt weird to be walking by so many closed shops and not see almost another person walking around. We see the restaurant and it looks closed. Adam reads a sign on the door that says they are on vacation from Sept 14-Oct 7! Our exact vacation! It was a bummer to ... read more

Yesterday we took a train to Bruges. It was only an hour ride. It was sunny and warm out here. We walked from the train station to our B&B, which was about 15 minutes or so. Certain things looked very familiar from our last trip. It was busy around here though. We have the same room at the Papageno B&B as we did in 2005. It's really nice here and the bed is one full mattress, not 2 twins pushed together! After dropping our stuff off we walked around the Markt and eventually found a small sandwich shop. I got a chicken curry sandwich in a baguette. It was good. We found a statue in a small square to eat lunch at. It was relaxing and nice to sit and people watch. We walked around a ... read more

The flight out here was okay. We got delayed in Montreal for a couple of hours, but I was able to sleep on the plane a bit. Air Canada had individual movie screens, so that was really nice. We arrived in Frankfurt, bought our train tickets to Brussels and waited for our high speed train. The trip to Brussels took about 3 hours and I was so tired I couldn't stay awake for most of it. When we arrived in Brussels it took a little while to find our hotel, but eventually (after Adam asked for directions) we found it. Our room is small but it works. Unfortunately it's hot in the room, so we have to open the window to cool it down. This normally wouldn't be a problem, but the mosquitoes sneak in and ... read more

Today we hung out with Amyn, Priya and Chandu. Amyn really wanted to go to the beach. After breakfast we took autorickshaws to a bus station -- trying to catch a bus to Mahabalipuram. We ended up getting on one to Guindy, where someone told us we could catch the bus we wanted there. The conductor told us to get off --- at some random intersectin of road. We ran across traffic and waited for a bus in the middle of nowhere. A guy waiting there was trying to help us -- and eventually we got on the right bus (where we saw the first other white people since we've been in Chennai). The trip to Mahabalipuram is about 2 hours by bus, so we would have gotten there at 11:40a, and Amyn needed to be ... read more
