This morning we got up and went to visit the Maori Leap Cave, which is a limestone cave that was sea-formed. There were only four of us and we got to wear hardhats and a funny old guy gave us a tour. The entrance to the cave is just kind of on the side of the road, by a cafe. There were a lot of cool formations inside, and even though it was kind of small, it was fun and we learned how the different formations were made, and about caves in general. There had been theft at this cave, where someone had come in and broken/stole some of the stalactites, which I guess was hundreds of years old. We went for a drive to the seal colony afterward where a few lazy seals were napping ... read more

Today we headed up to Kaikoura. On the way we stopped at Brew Moon Brewery for some snacks and to try some of their beer. It was pretty good. We had a Dark Side of the Moon Stout. We sat outside in a small courtyard, and while it was windy, it was really nice. They are just a small brewpub right on the side of the road, so I'm glad we stopped, and didn't just drive by. It was really nice in Kaikoura. We booked a cave tour for tomorrow, and then went to the Kaikoura Winery for a wine tasting/tour. It's up by the coastline, so it has beautiful views of the ocean. Unfortunately it was a little bit overcast, but it was still nice. We got to try about six of their wines. They ... read more

This morning we went into the main part of Christchurch for a look around. We watched some guys playing giant chess in Cathedral Square for awhile. They seemed very serious about a giant chess game! Then we headed out to walk along the Avon river. It was really pretty there - lots of weeping willows and greenery. It was weird to feel so transported from the large town around us to a serene small town feel. It felt very European. When we were walking along the river we saw a bunch of super cute baby ducks swimming around. We walked to a fudge shop (that we had tried to set up a tour for, but they were booked for days) and sampled different types of very tasty fudge. We got some of the most delicious fudge, ... read more

This morning we got our tire replaced at a cool car junk shop that sold second hand tires (as well as a bunch of other car stuff) and headed north toward Christchurch. We pulled over randomly in Rakaia to use the public restroom at a park, and it was right next to a giant salmon statue, that looked exactly like the giant trout statue we had seen a few days before, only painted differently. This amused us to think somewhere, someone was selling giant fish statues. We continued on, crossing over the Rakaia River Bridge, New Zealand's longest bridge (1,757 meters). We got into Christchurch, got a camping site in South Brighton by the beach, and drove back into the main part of town. We located the i-site and tried to book a couple different activities, ... read more

This morning we got up and went to the Forrester Gallery to see a steampunk exhibit. It was the last day of the exhibit, so I was happy we got to go. It was a free exhibition, and it was cool. Some of the pieces there were incredible. I had seen some steampunk things at home, but some of the stuff there was beautiful and interesting. After that we left Oamaru and were heading out to go see some Maori rock drawings and the Elephant rocks in the Waitaki Valley. We noticed a burning rubber smell. We pulled off and checked the engine and everything was fine. Adam then noticed we had a flat tire in the back. We drove to the next town. We stopped in at a little cafe and asked where the closest ... read more

In the morning the sun was out and the weather was beautiful. We went to Baldwin Street, which is the steepest street in the world. At the steepest point it's almost 20 degrees. We decided to walk up it, because we didn't think our van would make it up. It was a tough trek, but didn't take all that long. When we got back to the bottom, we went and got our free certificates that said we walked it. The guy wrote our name and date on them and everything. It was fancy for being a free thing to do. After that we went to the cemetery we were denied going to the night before. It was huge! It was fairly old, and a lot of the headstones had broken or toppled over. There were also ... read more

Today was a pretty quiet day. We slept in, and then headed off to Cadbury World to take a tour of the Cadbury factory. We parked at the train station (which was a really cool looking building inside and out) and walked the couple of blocks to the factory. The tour started off self-guided with the history of chocolate/how its made, etc. and the history of Cadbury chocolate. Then we met up with our guide and got hairnets and guy's with facial hair got beard snoods as well. Adam looked very sharp indeed! In the factory we got to see some of the machines that make the chocolate and then some of the machines that make the certain types of Cadbury chocolate. The only machine we really got to see functioning was the one that made ... read more

This morning we got up and enjoyed the surroundings before eating some breakfast. We were up early, but not early enough to see the sun rise or anything. But it was beautiful out again. The boat has a crayfish pot that they check every morning, so we got to see the crayfish pot being pulled up from the water. There were a bunch of them in the cage....even a small cod shark! The skipper took the shark out of the cage, and tossed it at Adam. It landed at his feet, but he pet him before he got tossed back in the water. After breakfast we started heading back toward the cove. The other ship mate had heard dolphins while she was below deck, and we were able to find them. It was incredible to get ... read more

So today we got up early to drive to Manapouri to start our cruise of Doubtful Sound. We met the coordinator at the Harbor with the other 10 passengers. We got on a big ferry to go across Lake Manapouri (it took about 45 minutes). The weather was cold and overcast. After the ferry, we got picked up in a van by our boat's skipper, John, who drove us over the Wilmot Pass(a 40 minute drive) to Deep Cove, where we were starting our journey. We had booked our overnight with Deep Cove Charters. We picked it because it caps their passengers at 12. Our boat, The SeaFinn, was pretty cool. It was small, but big enough that it never felt crowded. There were spots to sit/stand on the back deck, as well as go up ... read more

This morning we got up and drove the Milford Highway up to Milford Sound. Before we left we got some Bacon and Egg pies for breakfast that were awesome. The drive there was beautiful. I really enjoyed the way the landscape changed along the way. We stopped at a few places on the way up (and on the way back too). Our favorite one was The Chasm, where the rocks had been shaped by the water. It's just amazing to see what time does over a long time, and to have some visual proof of it. We had signed up to take a 2 hour cruise on Milford Sound with Mitre Peak Cruises. It was a shorter amount of time than some of the other choices, but it was on the smallest boat for a day ... read more
