My mother came by today to hand over a curious item; for some reason she wanted to give me my army dog tag, the metallic I.D. badge you are supposed to carry in a chain necklace during times when there is risk of war. Is she trying to tell me something? Oh well, it came intact in the brown envelope with warnings about refraining from carving my blood group data into the tag, a lovely piece of cold war nostalgia.... read more

Went to the post office today to have my passport sent to the Indonesian Embassy per recorded delivery. Well, it is not exactly a post office, seeing as Posten AB went cheap and had these services taken over by ambitious merchants in a vain hope to cut costs, and the store owners no doubt hoping to attract more customers to their grocery stores and newspaper stands. Having had some unique experiences with the former postal agent I was a bit concerned about sending my passport per an outift that had recently taken over the honourable mail service only a few weeks ago. It all went through in the end, although it took several attempts to get the proper postage cost calculated. The guy at the counter then carefully drowned the stamps in water before attempting to ... read more

Our last day in Shanghai is pleasantly warmer, yet the sky is covered in a haze. Our flight back to Bangkok is in the afternoon so we check out at noon and drop the bags at the hotel for a last walk around the Yu Yuan area. This time we inspect some new streets, crowded with merchants and hawkers. It seems every five meters someone approaches to stick a watch in my face while eagerly shouting "Rolex", "Omega" or "Citzen" (no, that's not a typo). The fact that you categorically dismiss one guy doesn't stop the guy standing five meters behind him to give it a go. Shopkeepers yell out as we pass by and if I ignore them they frantically clap their hands. "Looky looky!", "Special price for you!", "Come buy antiques!" From the general ... read more

Early rise this morning, we are booked on the 7.20 train to Yiwu. I have a very ill-timed nose bleed in the middle of morning preparations and as a result there are only twenty minutes left when we jump into a taxi and ask him to hurry for the main railway station. Fortunately the elevated highway is devoid of any major traffic jams and as we reach the station there are still a few minutes left. The unexpected security screening chews another precious minute on the way. Running through the station asking any official coming my way about the train to Yiwu we manage to find the proper track and board the train in time, we even have a minute or two to spare. We can let out big sighs of relief. The train we have ... read more

It is another sunny day in Shanghai and Kay and I have a made an appointment with Joanne today at noon. We have some time to kill so I show her around the newly discovered Yu Yuan food market which is a sure winner. More meat sticks follow. We then travel to People's Square and wait for Joanne, first at a bench in the park, and then in one of the oversized department stores. As she arrives we head for a coffee house and sit down to plan a bit about how to reach Yiwu tomorrow. We are given directions to the main railway station and instructions on how to obtain train tickets. Taking the MTR northbound we arrive at the busy station and a sizeable hall full of crowds lining up at the ticket counters. ... read more

Feeling a bit more confident about the orientation of the city we ditch the taxis and walk North towards Nanjing Lu, which takes roughly 20 minutes. We explore the busy side streets which are full of markets. I find some reasonably cheap mahjiang games and decide to pick up a copy of the smaller sets. We then board the MRT and head west for the Jing'An temple. It is a nice view alright, but the touts and beggars are hardcore and don't give any breaks here, so we don't remain for long, returning to People's Square and Renmin Park. Kay is meeting up with a friend of hers, so we split up for the rest of the day. I walk across the People's Square to find a good overpass from where to watch the busy traffic ... read more

Early morning arrival at the slightly depressing glass/concrete monster that is Pudong Int'l. We are being hearded through a long corridor with a big group of travellers. I stop by a lonely ATM and stock up on the ever present big and useless yuan bills (nobody ever has any change). Customs and immigration is as hustle free as ever in China and soon we're faced with finding a map and the transfer services. I immediately want to check out the maglev train, which we find after slowly wandering and exploring our way through another walkway. The staff speak as good as no English but manage to convey the fact that the train service doesn't start until 8.30, and we're a good 1.5 hours early. Although Kay doesn't mind hanging around I suggest we head for the ... read more

Waking up early morning (more like noon actually) somewhere over the Bengal Sea. I'm having breakfast and photographing the rivers of Myanmar. It is a beautiful day with cumulus clouds stacking up over the wilderness. At around 2 pm we're down on the ground and I now face another 10 hours of waiting around until the next leg of the journey to Shanghai. I weigh the options, thinking about heading in to town for a hotel with a nice shower and some sleep, as my original plan of going flight-sightseeing for the day is now a lost opportunity that I fortunately do not have to think about. I decide to stick around at the airport and spend an insanely boring afternoon walking around the corridors and people watching, hoping the hours will soon whisk away. My ... read more

The most cruical moment of any transcontinental flight always occurs at the smallest of airports involved. I arrive at Jönköping international airport at 11.30 only to learn that my connecting flight to Copenhagen has been delayed due to "technical malfunction" and we're awaiting a new plane. The Skyways crew however gets busy and proceeds to rebook us on new flights out of Copenhagen were necessary. However, since my flight requires a stop over in Bangkok for some reason they cannot issue this ticket (only a connection via Munich to Shanghai) they ask me to check with the SAS service center in Copenhagen. I sense trouble. Wasting the afternoon I sit down, chit-chatting with a 50-something ex-air hostess who is en route to visit her daughter in Paris. When Skyways finally get a plane here our flight ... read more
