A morning stroll to the market on Saturday in the gloriously warm sunshine, to shop especially for the most fragrant full-of-flavour strawberries, followed by a leisurely amble to the favourite café for our morning coffee. A perfect morning. Madeleines were baked in the kitchen of ‘Villa Pernot’, in preparation for our visit to Lyn and Neville’s friends, Robert and Jenny. They live in a very small village in Creancy, about a 30 minute drive from Dijon. The converted barn houses Jenny’s collectables from brocantes and grenieres. Lyn came back with a few purchases! The rolling green hills along our journey were dotted with huge hay bales; cattle and sheep grazed. Occasionally the canals could be seen. Travelling at 130kph made photography difficult! We head for Avignon today, Sunday, for a couple of days. Our accommodation will ... read more

Thursday 7 July 2016 Warm sunshine greeted us yet again this morning. After breakfast, Neville drove us to Beaune, about a 30 minute drive south from Dijon. The main reason for this trip was to visit the old hospice, the Hotel-Dieu, a palace for the poor. There is now a new hospital in the area but its forebear has never been forgotten. The words from a booklet, ‘In the Footsteps of the Dukes of Burgundy’ describe it this way…. “With its world-famous, annually held wine auction, the Hotel-Dieu in Beaune is also an amazing charitable institution. Founding it was a remarkably astute political move by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, who bestowed it on the inhabitants of Beaune in 1443. It was intended to provide them with relief in times of ... read more

Tuesday 5 July 2016 Market shopping day! Shopping trolley/jeep in hand we left Villa Pernot and strolled along Rue Courtepee, past St Bernard Square and headed to Les Halles, the food market. We shall let the photos speak for themselves. St. Bernard Square is dominated by the statue of the holy child of Fontaine-lès-Dijon. He was born of Burgundian landowning aristocracy in 1090. Both his parents were exceptional models of virtue. Bernard was raised in a family that learned deep respect for mercy, justice and loyal affection for others. He had a strong desire to serve others in charity. In 1115 he founded the Abbey of Clairvaux. Enough history lesson for now! There are seats placed to the front and either side of this towering statue of St Bernard. Trees and flowers add to the ambience. ... read more

Monday 4 July 2016 Another glorious day for us to enjoy! So blessed! Neville negotiates the narrow roads, roundabouts and, at times, crazy drivers with such skill. Remember, it’s all left hand drive in a manual car. Everything is opposite! A stunning drive through the Jura was quite breathtaking. The height of these mountains and the fir trees are astounding. The summer green simply glows. How were the enormous aquaducts built centuries ago? A morning tea stop at Les Rousses was welcome; unfortunately (or was it fortunately?) the ‘bear shop’, La Meubleurie du bois de L’Ours, wasn’t opening until 2pm. This shop is filled with the most fabulous carved wooden furniture, homewares and clothing for mountain living. It is Monday in France…most places close Saturday afternoon and reopen Monday at 2pm. Another visit is planned! A ... read more

Sunday 3 July 2016 Sunshine and a cloudless blue sky greeted us this morning. Lyn, Neville and Jan had a relatively early start…a brisk walk through the old town and along the canals. Mabel stayed at the apartment and knitted! The perfect weather enticed the four of us to the lake, Lac d’Annecy, and an hour long cruise. A superb way to spend the latter part of the morning on a perfect summer’s day. As we cruised along we observed 17 paragliders floating down from the top of a 2000 feet mountain. Several man-made beaches lined the shoreline, some are free to use, other private beaches were at a cost to use. Members of the Royal Family and Sir Winston Churchill spent some of their holidays in the area. Submerged footings of a chateau are still ... read more

‘Friends in France’ are now happily ensconced in a delightful apartment in Annecy, the Venice of France. The flights were smooth…as was the steward’s dance move with Mabel as soon as we stepped onto the Emirates plane in Melbourne! Three hours at Dubai airport passed quickly as we enjoyed the relaxing vibe of the Emirates lounge. Flying over the alps coming into Geneva was a highlight. Spectacular snow-capped mountains glimmered under the fluffy clouds. We congratulated Neville on his fine driving skill, negotiating Friday afternoon summer traffic in Geneva and copious roundabouts en route to Annecy. A warm, sunny afternoon followed by a balmy evening allowed us to enjoy the balcony and promise of summer weather. After a good night’s sleep we were ready to explore the local area…but what’s that? Rain?! Thunder?! Of course! But, ... read more

Me too! Me too! was Mum's cry of excitement when Lyn and Neville asked me to go to Dijon with them. Our pilgrimage to Gallipoli certainly fired the ANZAC spirit in this wonderful, amazing, now 92 year old. So...in 8 days time we leave Melbourne, the four of us, together. Grandmas in Gallipoli, now Friends in France. Part of this trip will cover areas of France that my grandfather travelled through 100 years ago. His diary records that he was in love with France....and how he enjoyed and appreciated the hot cups of tea waiting at the train stations....... read more

‘Lovely!’ became our catch-cry throughout our time in Devon. Everything was, well, lovely! From the lush, green countryside; the narrow, hedgerow lanes; the sea views and coloured homes; the historic buildings; the Devon cream teas; the bird-song greeting the dawn and farewelling the day; the fragrant spring flowers; to the wonderfully warm home life with Peter and Pauline. Lovely! The contrast of London after 16 days of peace filled country/sea life has to be experienced! The wall-to-wall people, congested traffic, the regular sound of sirens…. all adds to the hustle and bustle of city living. BUT the magnificence of the centuries old buildings brings history to life. We could see Big Ben and Victoria Tower from our hotel room and were quite refreshed by attending a church service at St George’s, Bloomsbury. Spending time with Michelle ... read more

Message from Mabel Thank you one and all for your lovely, thoughtful cards and messages on this, my 91st birthday. I am truly overwhelmed! I had no idea what was planned to celebrate; a mystery which could not have been better! The day began with the breakfast table adorned with cards and lily of the valley from Pauline's garden. Mum was thrilled - lily of the valley is known as May's birthday flower. She was encouraged to be organised to leave at 10:30am. A short drive to Churston Station, and still no clues were given except that it was a mystery. We boarded a green bus with a wonderfully humerous driver and headed along the 'country lanes' to Greenway, summer home of Agatha Christie. Despite driver Chris' commentary, Mum still hadn't worked out where we were ... read more
