Today was a rainy day and full of tailors. Ronald bought an umbrella from a street vendor and brought the price down to 50,000 from 550,000...pretty incredible. When we went to my tailor, my dresses weren't ready so we went back to our trusted restaurant, Thang Bom for breakfast We loved our wontons from Laugh Cafe yesterday, so we had some of those at Light Candle later in the day and they just weren't as good. The woman in charge is just darling, but the food was not as good as at Laugh Cafe. Anyways, Ronald got his coat, I got 3 of my dresses, he got his pants, and I'm waiting for a drop-off on my last dress. There was a problem she didn't tell me about until really late, so they're scrambling around to ... read more

Today we had to wake up around 10 so Ronald could be connected to the people in Chile for the application process that ties down all the websites in Chile this time o' year. So we went to our trusted restaurant that we've been to every day and got a table. Ronald started working and I went off to shop! (Never thought I'd say that...) Leather shoes are very common around here, so I went off to see what damage I could do to my wallet. I ended up ordering two pairs, one for 160,000 and one for 130,000 which were ready around 17:00 tonight...pretty nice turnaround rate if you ask me. We decided to leave tomorrow because there's really not much else for us to do here, so our next stop is Nha Trang, another ... read more

A man knocked on our door at 7:55 and told us to hurry! So we were surprised and went downstairs and he took us on his motorbike to the place where the bus was going to pick us up at. He told us to have a seat at the restaurant there (the Candle I think...) and about 1 minute later told us no no! The bus is coming! It wasn't. But the woman in charge ran us out two baguettes to go and after waiting a little while longer, stole them back to hurry and add jelly and butter and a water bottle and some minibananas for dessert. The plain baguettes were free, but when she added the other stuff, we ended up paying her. She was really sweet. Anyways, the bus came, we dutifully took ... read more

Today we rolled out of our hotel pretty late and when we were walking to lunch I heard my name and saw Alyna and Richard...again! She had called out to me in Ha Noi when we were leaving (late) for the bus from the Kangaroo Cafe to Sa Pa so we didn't get to chat. This time we chatted for a while and it was nice to catch up and sort of touch base. So random, but Yea, Sewanee's Right! At at the Vinh Hung restaurant and walked to the river. It's so pretty and there are so many shops, restaurants, vendors, musicians, and just people. Really fun and lively. The vendors here are pretty funny because they all start out with "Hello, how are you?" and then continue to walk with you and ask "Where ... read more

Qui ("Kwee") and Nho ("ño") came to our hotel right on time and loaded up our (lots of) bags on the backs of their bikes. I was on the bike with Qui and the two big bags and Ronald was sitting behind Nho on his bike. They first took us to their restaurant to have breakfast, and then we headed out. After a while we took a little break on the side of the road and Ronald and I wandered around the rice paddies and fishing area. Qui told us that the government tried to give some of the fisherman houses and land before, but a lot of them just sold it and went back to living on their tiny boats and fishing. Our second stop was to a waterfall with an elephant rock. We stayed ... read more

Arriving from the train around 10 am, we were abruptly bombarded by taxi drivers and hotel soliciters. We decided to keep walking a bit, but when we came to a crossroads, we were left not knowing where to go! Do we cross the bridge, do we follow the highway? Luckily this was a decision we were saved from when another hotel soliciter came and showed us his hotel’s brochure. He said he would go in a taxi with us to his hotel and we could check out the rooms; the taxi should be 40 or 50. We went with him because the double rooms were $10 and with a balcony $12. We sprung for the balcony, paid the 50,000 for the cab (it should have been way less with the distance we went) and immediately showered. ... read more

Our train arrived around 4:15 am, so we walked to the lake to get a little closer to the Kangaroo Café and that part of town. Kangaroo Café suggests you wait until Jasper’s breakfast at 6:30 (a restaurant near the train station), but we didn’t feel like doing that. There were tons of people there around the lake, stretching, warming up, and exercising. It was sort of strange because they warmed up for like 30 minutes by swinging their arms back and forth. I did see one lady jumping for cardio though, but other than that they didn’t really do much. Maybe it was some sort of Tai Chi. We took some pictures of the lake and the trees around it that were lit up by balls of Christmas lights. The lights went out around 5:45 ... read more

We had lunch today at Abeergies or something like that and it ended up being the same as Buffalobelle from yesterday. Literally had their menu with their name on the hard cover. Strange. There we had the potato soup again, but this one was a bit different, and we ordered a pizza. The service was great…more attentive than in Buffalobelle. Our mission was to find Ronald some The North Face hiking shoes. He’s a size 44/45, so it is really hard to find shoes—they really only go up mostly to 42 or 43. Apart from that, he was picky about no shiny buckles and wanted a dark color – gustos I agree with. They have some pretty ugly stuff they try to sell. While we were walking around to the different shops, we ran into Lan, ... read more

The walk today was really great, much better than yesterday's. Yesterday we just walked through one village and right back up, but today we walked about 12.5 kilometers and saw two villages and a lot of beautiful countryside. It's basically rice paddies as far as the eye can see and they aren't flat, but have been built up into the sides of the mountains, just like in Peru. The women from the Black H'mong followed us the whole way for two reasons: they go to the market in the morning and then walk home, and they wanted us to buy things from them. Our guide, Lan, told us a little bit about her life -- she makes the most money out of anyone in her family (she's 16). Max, the owner of Kangaroo Cafe, just sort ... read more

We were woken up by a knock on the cabin door at 5:25am, and arrived at about 6 am, met our guide, and headed to the Cat Cat hotel in Sa Pa. We got there around 7 am and had breakfast and then were shown to our rooms. Ronald and I slept until our 1:30 pm meeting with our H'mong guide. Our 16-year-old guide took us through a local village, into some of the people's houses, and back up to our hotel. It was really interesting to see these people on a Sunday working really hard to build a house together -- barefoot. We also saw a woman making shiny cloth by rocking back and forth on a smooth stone. I wish I could really experience their lives, but I think it would be impossible unless ... read more
