Asia January 27th 2011

While walking to Don Det Bungalow to wait for our bus, we passed Mr. Loy at his tour booth. I asked for the money he promised us the night before and he replied with excuses. We got angry and told him to do something and so he started walking down the path and we followed because it was the same direction we needed to go. Then he picked up a bike and literally biked away from us...forever. What a loser. We actually took a boat with the same guy that took us on the tour -- a local -- to the other side of the river and he showed us to a restaurant where we waited for our first form of transportation. By 12:!5 we were on our way and only two people were sitting in ... read more

Today we had another lazy day and were productive only when we bought our bus tickets to Bangkok. We did go to the tour place at 12:00, but the guy wasn’t there, so we have rescheduled the meeting to 19:00…hopefully he’ll be there. Anyways, the bus seems to be about the same price to have them make all the connections for you rather than to do it on our own. So we found a place that gave it to us for 240,000 kip each ($30) and we have to meet at the restaurant/guesthouse/tour agency at 11 tomorrow morning. We could have bought a bus to Ubon in Thailand and then switched to train, but it was way more expensive. So first we go to Pakse by van and then take a bus to Ubon and then ... read more

All I have to say is that if you ever see the company we bought from, don’t buy there. It was a complete sham. We got there at 12 and found we had a group of seven and then we followed a guy down the road to a different restaurant where we could buy beer before getting on the boat. This was a different man from yesterday and he didn’t speak English. Apparently the other man went to a wedding today, so he wouldn’t be around. Anyways, after much debate over who got how many beers and whether or not there would be a place to keep them cold, we loaded our beer on the boat and got in, the French Canadians sitting on the floor of the boat as there were not enough seats. We ... read more

Today we slept in until we rose (hey, we’d had a long couple of days) and at about 12:30 or 13:00 went to lunch and rented bikes. We had been told that Don Kane island was the more touristy one and thought it would be worth it to wander around there. It was a short and very bumpy ride to the bridge connecting the two and we were unhappy to have to pay to get onto the island. We didn’t really know where we were going so we just started riding and ended up at Long Beach. There are three restaurant huts there and I think it’s the place you have to go to in order to catch a boat to see the dolphins. We just wanted to explore and I wanted to cool off in ... read more

Boy, that was close. I woke up at 5:33 and realized we had missed our bus! Ronald sprang into action and went to the front desk and I packed up my bag. We were lucky and a tuk tuk driver was waiting for us about 5 minutes later and took us not too far away where a van was waiting with people in almost every seat and all of the bags waiting on the sidewalk to be loaded. At about 6:15 everyone was loaded in the van with the bags in the aisles and in front of the door. It was the strangest van ride, not only because things were crammed into every space available, but because the seats weren’t spaced evenly. On one side there were five rows of seats while on the right there ... read more

Today was a lazy day and we really didn't do anything apart from buy bus tickets to Laos. This in and of itself, is quite an ordeal. I even called the company for the prices because we had been told from $25 - 38. The company told me 25 with a free pick up at the hotel. No idea what it costs for locals though. Basically, there are about 2 or 3 options and most places only offer you one -- 5:30 am, 12 hours, and varying prices. Ronald found one spot that offered a night bus and a VIP option, so we bought from there. They had $26 listed as the price, but I asked them if it wasn't 25, and then they gave me that price. Who knows what the real price is, but ... read more

Rany picked us up this morning at 5 am and we headed to Angkor Wat and took our places in front of its lagoon inside and waited for about an hour before the sun rose at about 6:20. By 7:00 we were at the next temple. The second was pretty neat because it was symmetrical with four small square ponds on each side of a larger square pond which had a building in the center. The third one was small and there really was only one thing to see there: the tree that grew over the back entrance. Next we went to Mebon temple and then the Pre Rup temple. These last two were nice and I enjoyed exploring them, though I think my favorite is still Ta Prohm with all the trees. We finished at ... read more

Today we were picked up by Rany at 9:30 and first went to Angkor Wat, the main temple. We went to a few others, but really I thought the most interesting one was Ta Prohm because it had humongous trees growing on top of it and all around it. There's a video below of some ants that were there, crawling along a really long wire. Our plan for the evening was to go to the COFCO orphanage to see their dance show – we had gotten a flier from one of the kids and thought it would be fun to go to. We wanted to donate things instead of money, so we wanted to buy school supplies. Rany suggested 50 kilos of rice, but we declined for two reasons: rice is boring, and they can probably ... read more

Today we woke up at 9, early for us, and went out to see the National Museum and Royal Palace before 11 because the palace closes at 11 for lunch. We wanted to catch the bus around 12 or 1 so that we could be in Siem Reap in time for Ronald to work. First we walked to the palace and paid the $6.25 to get in along with about a billion other people, both tourists and schoolchildren. It was a really big complex and it was pretty, but I think they all sort of look the same, so maybe I’m not the best person to ask. You couldn’t take pictures inside, so that was lame, and we didn’t have a guide, so who knows what’s so special about it. There’s a gold pagoda and a ... read more

Today we took a “thirty-minute ride” in a tuk tuk from close to our guesthouse to Choeung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields, and then the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum for $12. We had the slowest driver on the face of the planet, but we did arrive safely, so I guess that’s a good tradeoff. It was $2 to get in and you can hire a guide there, but we decided not to and went first to their little museum. Here they had some photos on display of some of the leaders and gave a little background information on what had happened. They also showed a video that did about the same thing, documented the highlights of the region’s history. After the museum we walked outside to where the memorial temple was and walked around ... read more
