We almost missed our flight. Here's why: when we were waiting at the airport for about 5 hours, we were told when the check-in had opened and showed our passports only to have the lady tell us we couldn't check in without our itinerary to show. So we had to wait a few more minutes at a different counter but the woman wouldn't print it because we didn't have an outbound flight leaving the Philippines. Apparently we couldn't check in until we had proof that we were leaving too. They told us we had until 5:55 to check in, and it was 4:00, leaving us almost 2 hours to buy a ticket. So we went downstairs to ask the information ladies if this was a policy by the country or by the airline we were flying, ... read more

Is really friggin expensive. I should leave it at that, but I’ll give a little bit more I guess. For the past couple of days we’ve been wandering around the city trying to go to museums (many have been closed or remodeling or whatever makes them inaccessible) or certain areas of the city such as Chinatown and Little India but have had rotten luck. Every time we go nothing is there or is the opposite of what we’d thought it would be. We went to the Science center (best gift shop EVER!) and bought a ticket for the CSI exhibit too. We didn’t know it was geared towards children. It was a neat idea and set up well except for the fact that it gave you all of the answers to the mysteries! We decided not ... read more

We had used a couple of websites to help us plan our stay in the city, so we went to a restaurant we’d written down by grabbing a nearby bus. When we got to Hacienda, the restaurant, we realized it was much too expensive, so we hopped ahead on our schedule to go see the museum at Marina Bay Sands. It was nice to ride the bus because we got to see the city and it was full of green trees and plants. We also passed a street with about 10 blocks just full of shopping malls. Incredible. Anyways, when we got there we realized it was a huge, luxurious mall and when we arrived at the museum entrance were told that it was not open yet and would open sometime mid-March. Boo. We were going ... read more

This morning we headed to Melaka Sentral at around 9 and it took about an hour to get to the station. We were headed to Wonderland, a water park about 15 minutes away but decided to switch our plans and go ahead and buy a ticket for Singapore in the afternoon. All of the bus companies were the same basically, so we just picked one that left around 14:00 and went back to the apartment to gather our things and come back. We almost didn’t make it on time, but when we got there it was a few minutes before 2 pm and we hadn’t eaten yet so I asked the bus driver if I could run to the McDonald’s in the station before leaving. He said it wasn’t a problem so I ran there and ... read more

Melaka, or Malacca, is a nice city really. We went to see the palace museum and it was nicely done, I think. It was made of wood to replicate the original palace and had two rooms that illustrated and narrated two specific incidents that took place in the palace. Porta de Santiago is probably the most famous thing here, though, so you can look up its history if you're interested, but I can tell you briefly that it was enormous and had buildings from both the Portuguese and the Dutch (they took it over from the Portuguese and added many buildings). We had lunch at the Geographer's Cafe on Jonker Street before exploring the city some more and even arriving to the coastline. People were there flying kites and having picnics on the rocky shore. After ... read more

By 7:45 we'd taken the #30 bus and arrived at the Petronas Towers to secure a spot in the already substantial waiting line. I bought some sandwiches and drinks at the convenience store located conveniently across the way from the line and sat down to wait. We saw all kinds of people waiting there: Europeans, Americans, Asians, old, young, small, tall, clad in running shoes, sandals, high heels, dresses, suits, pants, shorts, headscarves, burqas (jubah), you name it. As a tangent, if anyone can explain the headscarf thing to me I’d appreciate it. What I’ve been taught is that women wear them as a means of protection from the lust of men. If that’s correct, then I don’t understand why there is so much fashion centered around this piece of clothing – it comes in any ... read more

This morning we took the bus and arrived at the Petronas towers at 9:45 to find a huge line and to be told that package 2 tickets had just been sold out. Tomorrow we plan to drag ourselves out of bed around 7 or 7 30 like the woman told us to do yesterday (we didn't listen) and head over there to get a spot in line. Thwarted, yet again, we left to go to the National Art Gallery. It's so far north it's almost not on our map, but we decided to go against the advice from the tourism brochure to take a taxi and instead walked. It took about 15 - 20 minutes and was an easy walk beside the roads without too many surprises. There's also a bus you can take from the ... read more

We hopped on a bus to get to the Petronas Towers because it is the cheapest. The metro also goes there, but the bus is closer to where we are and just have to go to the end of the block across from The Chill Inn. So we asked the driver if it went to Ampang and he said yes, so we hopped on and waited for a few minutes before pulling out. It took ten minutes to get there and cost RM 1 each. This was our first indication that our map was not-so-trusty. When we arrived at the entrance we saw a sign indicating that the tickets had been sold out for the day but they were selling Package 1 (visit to the skybridge, RM 20 -- it was free but they are renovating ... read more

Last night we went with Coco to The Blue Diamond Hotel because I had seen a sign for Mexican food and had a huge craving for nachos. When we got there we were told that they didn't have nachos and so to soothe my aching, breaking heart, we ordered enough food for five people. Hey, we hadn’t eaten for about 9 hours (I think…) and we were all hungry. Ronald and I ordered a chicken bean burrito, a chicken quesadilla, and beef tacos while Coco ordered fried rice and a chicken quesadilla, all of this accompanied by Tiger beers, of course. Upon the arrival of the food the disappointment set in. We realized that the burrito and the quesadilla were almost exactly the same and the "spicy salsa" served was actually not what it advertised. I ... read more

Today we went with Coco to explore the city, starting by having a nice little breakfast at W & O Cafe down the street (I had iced tea!). We started by going to Khoo Khongsi, an ornate temple, and from there sort of wandered around. We went to another small temple, a mosque (I had to wear a black robe because my knees were showing), the Pinanag Peranakan Mansion, Little India, and the Church pier (Ronald spotted a Komodo Dragon in the water as it was hopping up onto some steps!). It was extremely hot and I was glad to have a rest in the afternoon. We have decided to go to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, so hopefully we won't melt into puddles before then. Technical Details -people are really friendly here without trying to just get ... read more
