They don't seem to celebrate Christmas much, but there are some places with lights and decorations, but I think it's mostly for the foreigners. We got up at 7:30 for breakfast and then went to the Sung Sot cave, "Amazing" cave in English, saw a monkey at the end eating some bread, and then went to take showers. The cave was really touristy and it made me miss Sewanee with the untouched caves and preserved nature. We had woken up early to have time to go swimming, but it was too cold, so we just took showered and got packed. We had a terrible lunch at a nearby hotel and then went on the bus back to Ha Noi. Ronald and I had a few hours to kill before our night train, so we ate, went ... read more

"Ha Noi" means "the city inside the river". This name was given to the place in 1831 by their king. We left around 8 30 for the bay with our guide Thio (pronounced "Tao") and he explained a few things to us along the way about their culture. It was very foggy and he said it is like that all year except for in the summer. Also, their main crop is rice (they're the #2 exporter in the world) and they plow during the winter and summer. In the south they can manage three rice crops a year. Anyways, on the bus we met a nice Norwegian couple, Kjetel (pronounced "shetill") and Heidi, and we chatted with them along the way. We stopped about halfway through the trip to what was pretty much a tourist trap, ... read more

This day was sort of a worthless day...we walked around a bit and went to the lake, paid to get into the famous temple and saw models/brides posing for pictures along the sides of the lake. We went to the train station, booked our tickets, and had lunch at a cafeteria style place which reminded me of The Cheesecake Factory because it had a ton of different options to choose from. While we were walking around the other day we found the Kangaroo Cafe, littered with propaganda of how it is the one and only legitimate Kangaroo Cafe. We went inside when it was closing and had a look at their tours. for Halong bay for two days and one night was $79 each and for Sa Pa it was $129 each. We booked these tours, ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi December 22nd 2010

This morning we were kicked out of our hotel. The strange man in charge told us something to where we understood this: he didn't know we wanted to stay more than one night, plus, people are coming back from Halong Bay and need a place to stay. So he called up a "friend" hotel, Serenity, and they agreed to house us for the same $15.00 a night even though their lowest rate is normally $20.00. Serenity is really nice, just like Liberty, and you get a free breakfast, there's free wifi and two computers in the lobby, and they clean every day. We were put in room #602. It's like climbing up a bell tower to get to the room and it leaves you panting just as a bell tower would. But it's nice, so I ... read more

When we went out for breakfast (we paid in baht for this) we saw our tuk tuk driver from a week ago who had waited for us while we saw the famous building (can't remember the name...), so we asked him to meet us as Saysolay at 12 so we could go to the airport. We packed and waited outside, played checkers, and when he drove up he parked across the street. We went over to start loading our things and then some French lady came and was saying something to the effect of this was her tuk tuk driver and why are we in her tuk tuk. I assume that's what she said, but I don't speak French, so I can't be sure. Either way, we got the point across that we were going to ... read more

So sad to leave Vang Vieng! I wish we had another day there to go tubing, but we already changed our flight, so we have to go back. Boo. Our bus was supposed to leave at 13:00, so we went to eat lunch first at Kangaroo Sunset. Had a jacket potato (this was really just sliced boiled potato), pina colada, garlic bread, and meat which came out to be 115,000. We went to the bus station via minibus and another minibus came at 13:30, then another at 13:50, an then the big bus finally came at 14:05. Being an hour late leaving, we got to Vientiane at about 18:15 and quickly found other white people trying to get on a tuk tuk bus to take us to the center of the city. We could either take ... read more

This morning we woke up and were at the Wonderful Tours office at 8:40 as planned. We were told we'd leave at 9:00, so we went to the cafe across the street to get breakfast. Unfortunately, when 9 rolled around, they hadn't even started making our sandwiches yet. So off with no breakfast. On our tour was: a Hungarian couple, an Australian couple, a Korean girl, a Swedish man, and an Australian guy. Our tuk tuk truck took us up to the Elephant Cave Temple first. This was basically a tiny cave with a few buddhas inside and one rock that sorta looked like an elephant. Sort of a waste of time if you ask me, but then we were back in the tuk tuk to go to the water cave. There was a restaurant oh-so-conveniently ... read more

This morning I went out to try to find a sandwich for breakfast and the two closest places didn’t have sandwi ches, but the woman in the second place told me they had them at Kangaroo. Another woman offered to take me there on the back of her motorbike, so I hopped on and away we went! It was a short ride, but I thanked her and quickly went in to place my order of one chicken sandwich and one ham sandwich. I was going to buy beer, but it was cheaper at my guest house, so I decided to wait on that one. After breakfast we slowly made our way back over to the central part of the town (Jammee guest house is on the quiet, southern side) to try to find the tubes. This ... read more

Today we switched to a room upstairs because a) it’s the same price and b) it’s bigger and has a balcony! We set out on a mission to find a tour for tomorrow or Sunday because today we decided not to tube as Ronald has to work in the evening and that would be totally lame if we went tubing but didn’t drink…so, we walked around asking for prices and found Wonderful Tours who we settled with. We wanted to do the multi-tour with kayaking, caving, trekking, and tubing, and most of the places offered it for 90,000 (except for Green Discovery which was like more than 200,000 kip because “they are a company with certificates”…that was my answer when I asked why theirs was so much more expensive) but seemed sorta risky, so when we ... read more

We went to this café called Joma around 12:30 to have lunch. It was super yummy and we bought some treats to take for the road…I had been eyeing a raisin twist bread soo we got that, banana bread, and a chocolate oatmeal cookie. Seriously, all very delicious. We had to be ready for our ride at 13:30 so we went back and they picked us up almost right on time. We had to stop by a couple of places to pick up people and our tuk tuk truck was so full people were hanging off the back of it. It took us to our bus and it was really nice because we had a lot of room for ourselves – the bus was almost empty. When we left a little after 14:00, it was overcast, ... read more
