Rome. Just the whisper of it’s name evokes unseen emotions in each individual. There is music to the word which equals its tranquil beauty. Rome is a city mired in the difficult transition of maintaining it’s historical identity while meeting 21st century expectations of a capital city. In one hour of walking, one is able to traverse through over 2,500 years worth of history, with many buildings present in their original state. Our entry to Rome came from the east, as we spent a very peaceful two days on the beach at the seaside town of Pescara. The train traveled through some beautiful valleys and mountainsides until we hit the plains outside of Rome. Rome is an ever expanding city, with the outskirts relatively similar to those of Madrid or Barcelona, however, as we slowly entered ... read more

A Tale of Two Cities: Madrid y Barcelona We had heard hints and whispers foreshadowing the difference between Madrid and Barcelona but it wasn’t until we experienced each city before we realized the deep underlining truth of those differences. Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest cities in Spain, but that is the only similarities they share. Madrileños speak Castellano or the ‘pure’ spanish of the Monarchy and are Spaniards to the heart; while Barcelonians speak Catalan, a very different dialect more similar to French than Spanish, and are Catalonions first and Spaniards second. The differences continue with the environment and vibe of each city. Madrid is the essence of eloquence with luxurious apartments delicately modeled in the pure Baroque style. White marble graces the facades of many buildings with beautiful flowers in pots on e ... read more

Under the Tuscan Sun Cortona, Italy 8/24 - 9/4: Our journey to Cortona and another workaway experience had a wonderful start. Coming from Florence, we took a train and made a stop at Arezzo for a little day excursion before arriving into Cortona in the evening. Arezzo, where the Oscar winning movie “A Beautiful Life” was filmed, was the essence of Tuscan beauty. It is a walled city, with many stone fortifications still in tact, which fosters a feeling of antiquity while walking through the cobbled streets. The houses are made with the same ancient stone, many looking unchanged for hundreds of years. Flowers are ever present delicately hanging from beautiful terraces and balconies, while flags bearing the coat of arms of Arezzo are adorned proudly on every corner. We gladly wander the streets, following the ... read more

A Florentine Fairy Tale Florence, Italy: What can we say about our time in Florence. First, Florence is one of our favorite big cities that we have visited. We were so fortunate to stay in a beautiful studio with all the amenities, and about fifteen minutes from the city centre. While Florence is very large and spread out, the historic centre is quite small and extremely beautiful. Our first day was spent just walking around, taking in the unique beauty that can only be found in Florence. We were also very fortunate to have a great friend of ours stay with us in our studio. Tamara, traveling from Munich, spent four days with us and really enriched our stay in Florence with her wonderful company. Our first day we visited the famous bridge Ponte Vecchio, admiring ... read more

Andalusia Spain We were extremely fortunate to have been able to explore southwestern Andalusia the way we did. Having the freedom of housesitting on our own with a car, we created a schedule where we worked our hours in the morning and then took off to explore in the afternoon. We visited beautiful beaches, mountain top fortresses, and lazy towns unchanged for hundreds of years. What we learned about Andalusia is that it is old, very old and the region has retained that antique feel to it. From 800 AD to about 1500AD, there was constant conflict in this region between the Moors and the Christians. This ancient whisper of a constant fear was felt on everyone of our excursions, as every hilltop as far as the eye could see had a caste fortress or watchtower ... read more

Adventures in Zahara de la Sierra: June 21 to July 16/ 2014 Our time spent in Zahara de la Sierra was filled with adventure, hard work, numerous learning experiences, and appreciation of natures beauty. Since we spent an extensive amount of time in Zahara, just under four weeks, we are going to break our descriptions into the town itself, the farm or “finca” we stayed at including the work we did, and the various day time excursions throughout beautiful southwestern Andalusia. Zahara De La Sierra: There is no single word which can capture the truly stunning beauty of Zahara de la Sierra. Photos don’t do the village justice and words even less, but we will try with both. The town is situated within the famous Sierra de la Grazelema, a magnificent mountain range with towering cliff ... read more

English Seville, Spain June 18-20/2014 We exit the bus to the musical sound of Andalusian Spanish rolling off the tongues of locals wizening past. For us, it was such a beautiful sound. Looking at Seville on a map, it seems like an extremely easy city to navigate, however, we very quickly learned how difficult it can be. No street signs are posted and all alleyways look the same. Luckily, we are in Spain and Laura asks a lady for directions who insists on walking with us until we are on the correct street to our hostal. The city is bustling with movement, people, cars, language and we gladly stretch our legs while walking after our dreadful and uneventful train/bus trip from Lisboa. Our hostal, Trotamundos, is built in a classic Sevillan style, with a spectacular blue ... read more

English Lisboa: 6/16/2014 We exit the plane with unrivaled excitement. The fact that we just traveled on the world’s shittiest airline with literally no space for 8 hours did not hinder us. We were ready and willing to take on challenge. The first image we see as we exit the plane: “EU and Portugal welcomes you”. Hmmm yes, this is real. Immigration awaited after the turn of a corner, the dreaded fear creeps back after our countless problems with immigration services the past year; however, we enter with no question. Our bags arrive on time and we jet off to places unknown. First problem is transportation from airport to hostel. In all of our preparation we failed to research this tiny and yet vitally important detail. Luckily, thanks to Fernanda, Fer, and Nilei, Lau was able ... read more

Preview... ...Two weeks ago J and I were not even close to have moved out of our apartment and the idea of leaving everything behind couldn't be grasped yet. Together day by day after work we would come home and sell most of our things on craiglist.com. We were fortune and sold almost everything in less than a week. Goodbye to my lovely mini van in which I drove provably half of Bay Are kids from parks to the ZOO, and from house to house. I always will have the best memories of my kiddos on that car. Finally we were able to pull it off and now were moved into our parents house for the last couple of days before of departure. The waiting grew and the days at work seemed to be longer. We ... read more

Jason ate a typical Fish and felled in loved with the Colombian Culture. Back in Bogota we also visited different historical and tourist neighborhoods as " La Candelaria", " Usaquen", "Zipaquira" etc. This was a very short visit but we are so excited because we will be back for Christmas ... read more
