Under the Tuscan Sun
Cortona, Italy 8/24 - 9/4:
Our journey to Cortona and another workaway experience had a wonderful start. Coming from Florence, we took a train and made a stop at Arezzo for a little day excursion before arriving into Cortona in the evening. Arezzo, where the Oscar winning movie “A Beautiful Life” was filmed, was the essence of Tuscan beauty. It is a walled city, with many stone fortifications still in tact, which fosters a feeling of antiquity while walking through the cobbled streets. The houses are made with the same ancient stone, many looking unchanged for hundreds of years. Flowers are ever present delicately hanging from beautiful terraces and balconies, while flags bearing the coat of arms of Arezzo are adorned proudly on every corner. We gladly wander the streets, following the ‘Life is Beautiful’ walk and of course taking pictures at every scene. Arezzo, as in many Tuscan and Umbrian towns, sits on top of a hill, and the views are absolutely spectacular. The hill has a fortified castle and cathedral which dominates the surrounding countryside and allows for really beautiful views from the top of the ramparts of the various villas
and palazzi. We eat a wonderful lunch of Tuscan flatbread pizza and fried zucchini before happily descending to the train station for Cortona.
Cortona is another breathless town, sitting atop a hill with a similar beauty to Arezzo but smaller. We arrived at the train station and met our new ‘Host’ for the next 10 days, Gabrielle. He is quite a character with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. He forewarned us about the house situation, however, because they were hosting five other friends and their families for our first two days. We arrived to utter chaos of over 30 people and 10 screaming kids running around, which to be honest, was a little frightening. The next day was much of the same, however, we did meet some wonderful people from all over the world. As the days moved on and everyone left, it got a little calmer and we were able to thoroughly enjoy our stay. For our first five days we had another workawyer with us, Shireen from Scotland, who was really fantastic with great stories and very deep conversation. We learned how to make and preserve our own Tomato sauce and marmalades while also

Roman Theaterworking general maintenance on their farm property. Gabrielle’s wife, Yolanda, was an extremely wonderful person to us and made us feel at home and their two kids, Aurora and Cosmo, were gorgeous but also a handful at times. We instantly felt apart of the family which was so nice.
We also took some excursions to visit the beautiful countryside of Tuscany and Umbria. Our first trip took us to Cortona to explore the town and we finished with a free Yoga lesson from Gabrielle on top of the hill, just below the castle of Cortona, overlooking the truly beautiful Camucia Valley. During the Yoga class, the sun set and we both were in a complete sense of calm, peace, and happiness. After a few days of work, we asked to have an afternoon off to explore a lake which was a twenty minute train ride away. The town was called Castiglione de Lago, and as always was totally beautiful. The town sits next to the third largest lake in Italy with a very imposing castle built atop a hill overlooking the lake. We had a very relaxing day at the town beach enjoying the sunny weather and
beautiful views.
At this time, Shireen left us and two girls, also workawayers, from Poland joined us: Paulina and Anna. They were quiet at first but we ended up becoming great friends and shared some great nights at the local bar together. The third day after their arrival, we all got a day off, and Paulina and Anna went to a local church with Yolanda, while we went with Gabrielle and the kids to a town called Montepulciano for a very famous festival called “Il Barrio de Vietto.” We were so happy to get out of the house after two days of very intense work, that we didn’t think to do any research on the town or the festival, we went simply to enjoy the ride. Upon arrival, we were absolutely stunned at first, how beautiful the town was and second, how awesome the festival was! The town is relatively small and broken into 6 sections or “contradas.” The first year of the festival dates from 1379 AD and is a competition between these 6 contradas of the town, each bearing their own coat of arms and unique colors. The competition was originally a horse race from
the bottom of the town to the top of the hill, a climb of over 1 1/2 kilometers. In 1974, they changed the race from horses to pushing wine barrels weighing over 80 kilograms to the top of the hill. The festival isn’t just the race though, it is a month long celebration of local history, culture, and the regions famous wine Nobile Vino. We happened to go to the last day, where each contrada dressed in Medieval attire did an ancient performance before watching two selected men of each contrada race their wine barrels from the bottom to the top. Of course, we both had our own favorite contrada, Jason’s was Voltatia (colors black and red) while Laura’s favorite was San Donato (colors red and white). Voltatia ended up winning the race, by a huge margin, while San Donato finished last. Unfortunately, we had to leave soon after the race to head back home, however, Gabrielle was nice enough to stop at a winery overlooking the Montepulciano valley and hillsides to share a glass of wine with us. "Life is Beautiful" walk could enjoy our delicious wine. This day, one which we would never have known about or had a chance to experience, was definitely one of our favorites and a huge reason why doing this workaway program is so rewarding.
We were also fortunate enough to spend another day off and explore a different region of Italy, Umbria. We took a train to the heart of Umbria, a city called Perguia and spent a lovely morning riding the “mini-metro’ to the top of the city and then walking through it’s ancient streets. Perguia, as most Italian cities are, is situated on a hill, however, over the thousand plus years of existence, it has been raised, stone by stone, to sit about 70 meters higher than it originally did. Walking around, you can see stilts of stone holding up the various layers of the city, a truly magnificent architectural design. The cathedral, while dreary on the outside, was really beautiful inside with glowing Pink marble columns reaching incredibly detailed and colorful stained glass windows. Our walk through the historic centre was so rewarding and and the views from the various terraces were so beautiful, that words don’t do it justice. At

"Life is Beautiful" around 1 pm, we decided to take a train to Assisi, where St. Francis and St. Clare were born and raised. We know that we have said this before, quite often, but Assisi was for sure the most beautiful place that we have yet seen. Our words don’t justify just how beautiful the town is, from the buildings, flowers, alleyways, views, churches, and the colors and antique feel, it is endless how magical the place is. Franciscan monks and nuns wander the streets offering friendly greetings of hello. We could have walked around for hours just enjoying the views. It was a place where time stood still as if St. Francis was still wandering the streets spreading his word. The catedral de San Francesco was really spectacular as it should be. There are two basilicas, the upper which is adorned with numerous frescos depicting important events in St. Francis’ life, while the lower one which houses his tomb is the really powerful. The roof is completely covered in fresco paintings, depicting all sorts of scenes, but the colors are what catch your breath. White and pink marble columns swirl upward to meet this epic roof. Since you are deep underground,
the air is heavy, creating a very spiritual and powerful experience. The tomb of St. Francis is further underground, down a spiraling staircase, and encircled by heavy stone columns carved right from the earth. There is a sound, real or played, which initiates the feeling that there is a presence within. We left shaking, but profoundly impacted. We left Assisi with a heavy heart because we wanted to stay longer, however, very happy that we were able to experience this beautiful and powerful town. We would recommend everyone to visit given the chance.
We have now left Cortona and the family and our new friends. We had a great experience living with an Italian family and while the work was intense, we were able to see and do quite a lot of things. We consider ourselves so lucky to have found this great family to stay with and they showed us all the kindness in the world. We are moving on, but while our stay in Europe is winding down, our adventure continues.

workaway experiencia tuvo un comienzo maravilloso. Desde Florencia, nos tomamos un tren y hizo una parada en Arezzo para una excursión de un día poco antes de llegar a Cortona en la noche. Arezzo, donde la película ganadora del Oscar "A Beautiful Life" fue filmada, es la esencia de la Toscana belleza. Es una ciudad amurallada, con muchas fortificaciones de piedra todavía intactas, lo que fomenta un sentimiento de antigüedad mientras se camina por las calles empedradas. Las casas están hechas con la misma piedra, muchos de los que miraban sin cambios durante cientos de años. Hemos aprendido a hacer y preservar nuestra propia salsa de tomate, mermeladas y al mismo tiempo trabajo mantenimiento general en su propiedad de la comunidad. Gabrielle la esposa, Yolanda, era una gran persona maravillosa para nosotros y nos hicieron sentir como en casa y a sus dos hijos, Aurora y Cosmo, eran preciosas pero también un puñado de veces. Al instante nos sentimos separados de la familia, que fue tan agradable.
También hemos tenido algunas excursiones para visitar la hermosa campiña de la Toscana y Umbría. Nuestro primer viaje nos llevó a Cortona para explorar la ciudad y terminamos con una clase de Yoga gratuita de Gabrielle en la cima de la colina, justo debajo del castillo de Cortona, con vistas al hermoso valle Camucia. Durante la clase de Yoga, la puesta de sol y ambos estábamos en una completa sensación de calma, paz y felicidad. Después de unos días de trabajo, pedimos que nos dieran una tarde libre para explorar un lago que estaba a veinte minutos en tren. La ciudad fue llamada Castiglione de Lago, y como siempre fue totalmente hermoso. El pueblo se encuentra junto al tercer lago más grande
de Italia con un imponente castillo construido en lo alto de una colina con vistas al lago. Hemos tenido una jornada muy relajante en la playa de la ciudad disfrutando del clima soleado y hermosas vistas.
En este momento, Shireen nos dejó y dos niñas, también workawayers, desde Polonia se unió a nosotros: Paulina y Anna. Que eran más silenciosas al principio, pero nos terminó por convertirse en grandes amigos y comparte algunas noches maravillosas en el bar local. El tercer día después de su llegada, todos tenemos un día de descanso, y Paulina y Anna fue a una iglesia local con Yolanda, mientras nos íbamos a Gabrielle y a los niños de un pueblo que se llama Montepulciano para un festival muy famoso llamado "Il Barrio de Vietto." éramos tan felices que saliera de la casa después de dos días de trabajo muy intenso, que no creo que hacer una investigación sobre la ciudad, el festival, fuimos simplemente a disfrutar del paseo. Piazza Grande with all the area's Coat of Arms hanging vagando por las calles repartiendo su palabra. La catedral de San Francesco fue realmente espectacular como debe ser. Hay dos basílicas, la parte superior que está adornado con numerosos frescos que representan importantes acontecimientos de la vida San Francisco, mientras que el inferior que alberga su tumba es muy importante. Seistre Levante's Coat of Arms de la familia, y nuestros nuevos amigos. Tuvimos una gran experiencia viviendo con una familia italiana, mientras que el trabajo fue intenso, por lo que pudieron ver y hacer muchas cosas. Nos consideramos muy afortunados de haber podido encontrar esta gran familia de permanencia y que nos mostró a todos la bondad en el mundo. Estamos avanzando, pero mientras que nuestra estancia en Europa, está llegando a su fin, la aventura continúa.
