Carrying on with the 4th day of our tour of North Korea for the first time we actually left Pyongyang. This brought up some new rules - like you can't take photos of the roadway or countryside while inside the bus. But for some reason nobody batted an eye while we were out of the bus. We were driving to Nampo which is on the west coast, on our first bit of ridiculous North Korean highway. The highways are 8-10 lanes wide. No markings, no traffic, no maintenance, and very very rough. It's difficult to make any kind of decent speed as the vehicle is bouncing around and swerving around the roughest parts. The reason the roads are so big is to be used to move military equipment in case that becomes necessary. I had also ... read more

North Korea or the DPRK was an incredible experience. Seeing what the rest of the world only hears about from the media and how the people on the inside see both the outside world and their own country is not something I will soon forget. I'm extremely glad I made the difficult decision to visit North Korea. Our first NK day consisted of meeting with the tour group and flying to Pyongyang on Air Koryo, the so called "Worst airline in the world". Honestly I thought that the China Eastern plane we took from Osaka to Beijing was in worse repair and the staff on Air Koryo seemed much more professional. Our check in was aided by the fact that the CEO of the company who had organized the trip was accompanying us for the first ... read more

Osaka came and went. And it is quite the place - but I'm very glad all the cities in Japan we visited were drastically different from each other. Our arrival to Osaka took us to Dotonbori, this is a pedestrian only zone with lots of shops, street food, and yet nowhere to sit down. Well... nowhere to sit down except the "beer garden" we stumbled upon. That afternoon it was a balmy 16 degrees and sunny so it felt perfect grabbing a few brews, even if the Japanese pour draft with a quarter head... We also grabbed some Takoyaki which is an Osaka specialty. It's a delicious dumpling with green onion, ginger, and most importantly the octopus (Tako). They're served up covered in mayonnaise and some other sauce and go down real well with beer. The ... read more

Well I left off after a few days in Tokyo, since then there's been a couple more in Tokyo, a day in Nagoya, and now just finishing up with Kyoto. The last couple days in Tokyo we didn't see anything very specific and the last day was definitely about relaxing and taking it easy. We checked out a couple parks and that's about it. Turns out the English pub had the wrong champions League game on. But oh well. Our journey onward next brought us to Nagoya. It wasn't a huge stop or some place that most people go. But it's on the Shinkansen line that connects our other destinations; Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. It turns out that Nagoya is famous for its Miso Katsu - fried pork cutlet, and the fact that it is where ... read more

So for those keeping score I'm in Japan. Last week my friend Craig and I flew to Tokyo to meet another friend Conner and his bud Matt. This is the first part of our Japan, China, and North Korea trip. Anyways, it's been 5 days in Japan now and it's very different than I had expected. Japan just doesn't feel like Asia at all. Having been to SE Asia Japan just seems soft. It's no different than any other western city except there are 37 million Japanese people in the greater Tokyo area... And that's without any exageration. So as of now we've been doing proper tourist things. Plus consuming lots of alcohol from the 7/11, Family mart, and Lawson convenience stores - which might be a faux pas to drink on the street or trains ... read more

Moab is a crazy place. The last few days will not soon be forgotten. The landscape here is something which has to be experienced. Photos do not do it justice; the scale of everything is hard to grasp and it makes taking photos even harder too. Massive landscapes, towering towers, reaching arches, and everything else here causes massive shadows to fall in weird places which are definitely nice for escaping the heat, but often lead to hordes of people trying to all be at the right place at the right time to get "the" photo. I like taking photos, but I'm not that guy. In the past few days I've done a dozen hikes ranging from 8 km to 2 km and have seen more natural arches than I can shake a stick at. The most ... read more

Nearly a year since the last update I'm finally travelling again. After some last minute preparations last week, on Monday I pointed my truck south to the border and kept on going. Monday took me to Oregon somewhere where I had failed to realize that the campsite was at 1200 meters elevation. This isn't such a big deal until you find out that your -18 sleeping bag is indeed worn out and the temperature drops to -2 overnight. The following day took me through Oregon, Idaho, Part of Nevada, and then a couple miles into Utah. This was a long day to begin with, and it was made even longer by a 2 hour delay I spent at a Toyota dealership getting a brake line replaced. (Idaho is perhaps the most boring place I've ever been, ... read more

I’m home! I left you off on my last day in Denmark. From there I made a drive which by Europe standards was lightyears long, but in reality it was only 600km to Bremen. It was actually a pretty nice drive and the weather was only terrible for the first half, but eventually the sun came out and I made good time. Bremen was just a brief stop on my way further south to Paderborn. Paderborn is a rather small city, but more people know about it now as they’re in the first Bundesliga. A friend from Canada, Fiona, is working at an elementary school nearby teaching English. Even though we got there on a Sunday, it was the last day of the fall fair so the city was bumpin! We ended up going for a ... read more

Hallo, I am in Copenhagen! But first I'l give a run down of where I've been on the way here. I left you off just before driving to Berlin. I stayed there for a few days, doing all the touristy things and enjoying my time with my friend Anna. She was a fantastic tour guide and showed me around the Burroughs of the city while she could, and then I figured out the rest on my own. There's lots to see in Berlin; I saw the old section of the wall separating East/West Berlin which is now set up as a graffiti art gallery (a small section is in the top banner). Berlin is a really weird mix of old and new as well. Some really cool buildings in the modern parts of town and tons ... read more

So the end of the drydock has now come and gone. All the major work was completed; new engine installed, fresh hull coating, new venues and cabins, azipod bearings replaced, and most importantly - the hole cut in the bottom to install the new engine was sealed back up. We then floated the ship out and brought her alongside for 1 night to get all the systems online before turning her back up the river to the port of Rotterdam. Where I managed to walk off the ship shortly after 8am, and by 11am I was in Germany on my way to Bonn. This whole trip has a focus on mostly seeing friends. In Bonn I saw the important things, town square, Beethovens house, and had some beer on the riverside. Here I was staying with ... read more
