I’ve been onboard for a couple weeks now and figured it was time for an update. Getting to Miami was crazy, the flight had a layover in Dallas (which is a really nice airport btw). But American Airlines is the worst airline in the world; I had to pay for my luggage, no food on the plane (included or to buy), and for some reason the airline decided to delay my connecting flight to wait for all the other late planes to arrive and the people to get onboard. As my flight to Dallas was early, and the connector was late I ended up being in the airport for 6 hours, and stuck on the tarmac for another 2… The only good thing about this whole experience was an incredible display of lightning we flew past. ... read more

So I'm off to sea to acquire the remaining amount of seatime I need as a cadet. This saturday I board the Oasis of the Seas in Fort Lauderdale. She and the Allure of the seas are the worlds largest cruise ships. Last year when I was on the Independence I was overwhelmed at just how large that ship was, and the Oasis is 40% larger. I'll be based out of Florida going to the Bahamas, Haiti, St Thomas, St Maarten, Jamaica, and Cozumel. Here's a rather comprehensive video that shows just how incredible this ship is: Oasis of the Seas Tour Next blog is from the high seas!... read more

Well I'm back on the wet coast. Having seen only 5 days of rain in my months at sea and coming back to 5 days straight of rain, I'm beginning to remember why people think it rains alot in Vancouver. Because it does! Having these rainy days has given me the time to go through my photos, decide on a number to upload that isn't too ridiculous and mess around in photoshop a little bit and get the best results possible. So without further stalling, here are nearly 250 of the best shots I took this summer: Photos! Ontop of that, there are 8 photos from there that I made near perfect and they are uploaded high res to my deviantart here: Nicely Edited Photos! Lastly, It's Movember. For those of you who don't know what ... read more

I know it’s been quite some time since I’ve updated this here blog, but I’ve been quite busy with work and entries all about work are pretty boring to write and read. Now that that’s out of the way, A few weeks ago I decided I was going to go ashore in the ports that I hadn’t yet because of scheduling. These mostly ended up being tender ports. Cannes was first up, It was pretty much just as I expected: Pretentious and French. There were lots of high end shops that neither I nor the 2nd officer I went ashore with could comprehend spending money at. The one thing that we did see lots of were movie theaters, made me feel like I was in Entourage (when they go to the film festival in Cannes). Conveniently ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Lanzarote September 7th 2010

Hello again! I’m currently somewhere off the coast of western Africa headed towards Spain. The cruise I’m currently on stopped at 3 of the Canary Islands, which is awesome. But I’ll expand on that later. Because I’m actually doing work on the bridge and working alongside officers I’ve been able to make more of a “hello, hey” kind of relationship with them. So in Vigo I went out with an officer and a bunch of the quartermasters (guys who drive the ship, act as an extra set of eyes while underway, and do safety related jobs onboard) for lunch. Vigo is the biggest fishing port in all of Europe so seafood was on the menu. We started with some octopus, squid, and mussels then finished with the best Paella (Pie-Eh-a) any of us had ever had, ... read more

Lisbon: I had a couple hours to walk around so I started in the direction of a monument I had seen on arrival. Turns out it was a little bit of a further walk than I had envisioned… After getting slightly lost and buying a 6 pack for 2 euros I found myself back at the ship. But not before I had walked 7 kilometers… Every time we enter or leave Lisbon harbour we have to go under the 3rd longest suspension bridge in the world. We normally clear it by 6 or 7 meters. But this time due to the very big tide we had less than 4 meters of clearance. The pilot was very concerned and stared at the camera facing the stack until we cleared it. Vigo, Spain happens to be the biggest ... read more

So my weeks with the deck repairman and working in the engine room are now complete! Work with the deck repairman was a pleasant change. It was nice to actually have to think about what I was doing. Work on deck was mostly monotonous, but every day was different with the repairman. We had to do metal repair on one of the aluminum gangways, completed some welding on the mooring deck, serviced some watertight doors, and did lots of other odd jobs. It was like being a handy man. My week working with the engineers was by far the most interesting week I’ve had aboard. I spent most of my time in the engine control room learning as much as I could by talking with the engineers, and by reading the ships operation manuals. I learnt ... read more

Well there isn’t much to talk about as far as onboard life goes. I’m basically finished doing deck work which means no more early mornings spent swabbing the decks. This week I’m working with the deck repairman, he is in charge of finding creative repair solutions for deck equipment, completing hot work (welding, grinding, etc), and checking inspecting things like tanks and structures. On the 31st I’ll be starting work in the engine room, and I have no idea what I’ll be doing. A week later I’ll finally be working on the bridge. When we were in Civitavecchia 4 of us took the train to Rome. We accidentally boarded an Intercity Train instead of a Regional train which caused us to pay 8 euros more than our 9 euro ticket when our tickets got checked. Rome ... read more

Well I have been keeping a notepad to write interesting things in so I have something to talk about. Unfortunately, for the first week after my previous blog not a single interesting thing happened in my life. So I’ll fast forward to the 8th of June. Think about this for a moment; when an anchor comes off the bottom it brings with stuff from the sea. This normally ends up being clay, mud, and of course; water. So to deal with this, the bottom of the chain locker is perforated to allow all these things to drop clear of the chain. From time to time this space needs to be cleaned. A small hatch is the only entry into this god forsaken space. 20 inches tall, full of girders and spaces hardly large enough to fit ... read more

Happy Canada Day folks! Now that it’s July I have been here for more than a month. I can hardly believe how fast the time goes by. It feels like just yesterday I was getting on a plane in dreary Vancouver. Probably has something to do with the fact that on top of school work, hitting the gym every second day, and having meetings with officers, I’m also working 10 hour days. One day I had to grease all the mooring equipment on the forward deck. I never though this would be a bad job until I realized the big painted number on each winch was the number of grease nipples each had. The big winches had 80 each, and there are 14 winches in total. Needless to say, I’m never complaining about trying to find ... read more
