It had rained fairly heavily for a while during the night it was impossible to miss with the rain pounding on the tin roof of the donger. I lay there hoping it would not last too long as on the way in the roadside was very sodden in parts and if too much rain fell flooding may be an issue. We were able to settle our account from the previous night as the Telstra issue had been resolved and so we were on the move at 0725 along the Tablelands Highway which headed towards the Barkly Highway. The countryside when we left was quite different from the journey in and early on it was very undulating which is a little out of the norm as you get used to things being relatively flat. Due to the ... read more

Today was the start of our holiday, well to tell you the truth it was yesterday but today we hit the road heading in a South Easterly direction – Sunshine Coast Queensland here we come. We are so looking forward to catching up with our kids, family and friends. The mundane side of our break means visits to the Doctor, dentist, accountant, etc etc basically getting all our personal and business things sorted. We have spent the last 10 months working in the Top End and with the Wet Season really kicking into gear things now start slowing down so it is time for us to have our break. The Wet started in fairly grand fashion back in November rainfall was quite consistent throughout the month but then dropped away in December, the locals were a ... read more

We treated ourselves to 2 nights in Darwin to celebrate our Wedding anniversary. The thought of spending a couple of days in a spacious unit compared to the confines of our van was particularly exciting as much as we enjoy the van it was nice to be able to “spread our wings” as it were. Our choice of accommodation was the Mantra on the Esplanade apartments and if the tariff is any guide we were expecting some pretty luxurious digs. Liz had booked a one bedroom apartment that was overlooking the water and asked if we could get one as high as possible in the complex. Upon our arrival they informed us that we had been upgraded to a two bedroom apartment – we sure did not need a 2 bedder but as the saying goes ... read more

We wanted to spend a few days in Darwin and enjoy what was to be our last piece of civilisation for a while before heading down to the Litchfield area where we are expecting to stay/work for about the next 6 months. Caravan Parks are rather expensive in these parts particularly closer to the City itself yet it was only the shoulder season as the Wet Season was still with us though the rains were becoming less frequent. We chose to stay at the Oasis Caravan Park and were happy with that decision, staff were friendly and the park and amenities were clean and tidy. We met numerous people who had stayed at the park before they reckoned it was the best in town. The swimming pool at this time of year is quite warm though ... read more

As per usual we got up before sunrise it was nothing spectacular to look at but I snapped a few shots anyway, cooked some breakfast as we were both starving we had been too busy jamming the night before to cook dinner and set off on our way. These young folk can’t handle the pace they were still pushing out the zeds when we left. Just over 90 km’s up the road is the famous Pink Panther Larrimah Hotel, we drove past last year but this time we pulled in for a look. I’m glad we did and out the back of the pub they have a little menagerie happening which includes a huge variety of birds, a croc and other critters. Entry is free but a donation is gladly accepted. We only drove for a ... read more

WARNING! This is part 2 of a blog you should read the previous blog before this one to fully understand. Go on don't spoil it. Wow it was AMAZING! Spacecraft of every conceivable size and shape flittering across the sky with lights so bright they were almost impossible to look at, it was like watching a collection of the best Sci Fi movies ever made. I guess it was no surprise that the most common shape was in fact the traditional disc/saucer and I felt that they were actually putting on a “show” for all of us who were watching. These objects made noises like I have never heard in my life and suddenly a huge orange glow beamed out from behind the nearby ablution block, sure I was a little tentative but never in a ... read more

I was excited about heading off this morning as I was keen to stop for the night at Wycliffe Well – The UFO Capital of Australia. Last year we stopped for fuel, bought a couple of souvenirs and took some touristy photos but this time it was stay material! The drive was pretty uneventful but the landscape does change a bit along this section with some nice hills of exposed rock at various points, created many millions of years ago. We did pass some more cattle along the way as we had yesterday but these were not the least bit phased, I think the heat had dulled their senses it was pretty warm out there and they were taking refuge under some small trees. They were very content for us to drive by without incident. One ... read more

The drive along these parts is certainly not the most exciting around but as I have mentioned previously I try and enjoy the journey as best I can as it is one way of keeping my concentration levels up. My senses were to get a quick start not long after we headed off. It was not far up the road when we had a close encounter of the bovine kind, this was to be our first with these beasts since fitting the animal repellent gadgets. Now I have described the reactions of crows, eagles and emus but cattle seemed rather confused. More often than not they just casually watch you drive by without an apparent care in the world, these little chappies today seemed far more agitated. As we approached they tended to dart away from ... read more

At 5am I went for a walk outside to, um, stretch the legs and the sky was bursting with stars, the Milky Way was magnificent as always. I eagerly awaited sunrise and was not disappointed as it was reasonably good and I snapped a few shots. While in Adelaide I had purchased two little gadgets in a disposal shop for $4.95 that are meant to frighten wildlife away not a big risk if they did not work I thought, they function by emitting a high pitched noise that can’t be heard by humans. Well I decided to fit them this morning before we left, they certainly were not going to work if they’d stayed in the glove box. They are easy to install using trusty double sided tape and simply pushing them onto the bull bar, ... read more

We left Adelaide this morning and had thoroughly enjoyed our time there but once again we had to hit the road and make our way to our next job - in the Northern Territory. It is approximately in round figures 3000 km’s to our next destination and we intend to take 10 days to get there, this allows us time for some sightseeing along the way. Now it was only last year that we made this very same trip so we can bypass some attractions that we have already visited but at the same time enjoy some of those that we are yet to see. The roads in the Australian Outback are at times very long and very straight, to some they may be considered boring but to me I see them as a challenge. I ... read more
