Our third season at the Litchfield Tourist Park http://www.litchfieldtouristpark.com.au/has just drawn to a close and not surprisingly again we had a sensational time. The season for us this year went from mid March to mid November. Believe me if warm weather is what you desire then a Dry Season in the Top End of the NT is a remarkable place to be, from April to September the daily temp is low 30s – every day. The overnight minimum temp in the middle of the year is usually around 15 but this only lasts for maybe 5 or 6 weeks mind you it did get down as low as 6 on a couple of occasions. Blow me down, one morning I actually put my jumper on for a couple of hours but just the once. It is ... read more

July 1st is Territory Day and it is celebrated for many reasons, chiefly I believe by most people because this the ONLY day in the year you are able to purchase and ignite fireworks apart from Canberra anywhere in Australia. I am referring to the general public the you and me’s. They are available to buy for about 12 hours and only on July 1 itself. At around 1001 the “party” begins you can hear crackers exploding sporadically but by the end of the evening the noise builds to a thunderous almost nonstop sound of Boom! Bang! and everything in between. Like a war zone – seriously. It did not matter what you were doing or where you were going someone was letting off their fireworks. Along the Esplanade at the end of proceedings it seems ... read more

I don’t like to go on about sunrises but they are without question one of nature’s most beautiful sights of course sunset’s fit in to the same category. Our balcony had wide open 180 0 views over the rooftops to the North and East, so a little before 0530 I quietly snuck out to the verandah and was very glad I had as the sunrise was pretty special. We had a good feed for brekky and did not need to leave early as we planned to stop at Mt Isa (yet again) which was a little under 770 km’s down the road, a relatively easy day. Now be honest – raise your hand if you have ever been guilty of exceeding the speed limit while driving. Mine’s up. I have been driving since 1977 and during ... read more

I poked my head out of our unit window early. Despite facing North and some pretty high hills to the East I was really hoping for a beautiful sunrise that would at least give me some colour on the water. It was about 0550 but alas no such joy nonetheless it is always nice to be up at dawn, it is a magical time of the day. I snapped a couple of shots and enjoyed the little colour there was in the sky change while I sat on one of the numerous seats dotted along the foreshore some of which were made of recycled plastic soft drink bottles, what a hugely clever concept. As I sat there I wondered to myself why people who had sat at that very same place and enjoyed the very same ... read more

I was awake fairly early so I could check the forecast of that potential cyclone up North. I was really hoping we could continue in that direction I was very keen to see Airlie Beach as I’d heard many glowing reports over the years. In fact I’d convinced myself prior to switching on the computer that regardless of the forecast we were going. Here I would like to spell the sound a computer makes when you turn it on but I don’t believe that is possible. Any suggestions? Great news all systems are go so Airlie Beach it was to be. I had done a little research on Mt Etna NP a little North of Rocky it sounded like a very interesting place for a walk with numerous photo opportunities which also included Capricorn Caves a ... read more

It was tough but it was time to leave the Sunshine Coast as our holidays were drawing to a close and we had to head on back to the Northern Territory, where hopefully we would be in for a busy Dry Season so at 1000 we fired up the car and were northward bound. A decision had not been made as to our route home until about an hour before our departure. It is nice sometimes to not be too regimented and go with the flow however some careful considerations needed to be taken. I like to watch the weather when travelling fairly closely because particularly in the Tropics at this time of year many factors can influence your journey. Cyclones can still form at this time of year and in fact they are expecting one ... read more

Having lived on the Sunshine Coast for many years we did not set out to do all the things that holidaymakers would normally do when visiting this incredibly beautiful part of the world. Just some of the things we did get up to besides spending lots of time with family and friends were :- Celebrated Australia Day twice, that being on the Sunday and Monday. Celebrated my birthday, both lunch and dinner. Played 10 pin bowls which we had not done for quite a few years. Plenty of shopping we had lots of things we so needed to buy. One of my best purchases was a Manfrotto tripod that I scored at a 40% discount – very happy with that. Enjoyed the natural beauty of the Noosa River and Noosa’s beaches and parks. Enjoyed some delicious ... read more

We got up early and were on the road at 0540 in just another 500km we would be arriving at my two sisters (Marita and Madeleine) place in Cooroy where we were to spend a good part of the next few weeks. It is funny spending lots of time in remote or semi remote areas because you don’t have much traffic to contend with, I could not believe how “busy” the road from Roma was at that time of day. At Miles we stopped briefly to grab a bite to eat and then it was back to it, we were both real keen to get back “home” and catch up with everybody. Further down the road we chucked a lefty onto Wondai Road it was a great drive as I had not ever been along this ... read more

Due to a fair amount of cloud cover the sunrise was not going to present us with any colour worthy of a photo and at 0610 we were off heading to Longreach. We beat the sunrise on this occasion but after about 15 minutes it poked through a little gap in the cloud and was aiming straight in our eyes. Not often I hit the road this early in the morning but in these parts it is very flat and sparsely vegetated and you can see for miles. We did want to reach a tyre store in Longreach at the opening of business which I suspected would be either 0800 or 0830 at the latest, we were keen to get the flat repaired and set about covering some k’s. All going well we could make it ... read more

Our next planned stop was to be at Winton about 470 km down the road so there was no hurry to get away early so at 0740 we decided to head off. As previously mentioned Mt Isa is rather unique in many ways and it certainly has a way of farewelling visitors through no fault of its own though. Not more than 10 minutes out of town the stench of decaying road kill starts and continues noticeably on a regular basis for a period longer than my nostrils considered fair. It was unusual in the fact that often you could not see the poor critter involved but you sure could smell it, but overall along the entire journey to Winton I reckon there was more road kill on or beside the road than on any stretch ... read more
