So today we said our goodbyes to the Chinese students who helped us and the Taiwan students because we were taking separate buses to immigrations---ONLY TO REALIZE that we didn't have to say our goodbyes just yet because we ended up arriving at immigrations at the same time anyways!! So after we RE-said our goodbyes again, we took a bus back to Hong Kong Island. Once we arrived to HK we got put in new rooms again. We also had to pickup our luggage we left off from 1 week ago. Then as soon as Tracy got the call from Tiny; me, Tracy, Maggie, Janice, Angela, Tiny, Kristine, and Nick left by subway to go to Disneyland (well actually Nick decided to go see the Big Buddha instead of Disney but he still traveled with us ... read more

Guangzhou 6 Right… So I ended up going on the field trip today because I didn’t think it was worth NOT going. It was our last full day together and I wanted to be together with everyone on our last day, not asleep. So basically we got a tour of the old Guangzhou. I know that Angela wasn't felling well this morning so I didn't think she was going to come, but she did... after Dr. To told her there wouldn't be much walking--- but we walked for like 2 hours around the city. (So much for not walking a lot.) While on the bus, I was introduced to this girl Melody (or maybe Melodie not sure how she spells her name). Melody, was so super talented! She could do just about anything: spoke 4 languages ... read more

Guangzhou 5 Well today we had our farewell dinner. I don’t want to dwell too much on the lectures since we only had a few more days left together. So we went to our farewell dinner and it was a little bit sad to receive our certificates of completion because for me, it further pointed out what limited time I had in china. Apparently it was unanimously decided that all of us were going to hit the club True Colors again. So literally like 30 of us grabbed like 10 taxi cabs and headed for the same place. ALL I CAN SAY IS: GREATEST NIGHT EVER! It was funny, fun, romantic (for some), sad for others… When I returned back with layla at around midnight or so, I made sure she told the taxi guy NOT ... read more

GUANGZHOU 4 So I woke up a few hours after I fell asleep to go to lecture. After lecture the field trip for the day was (or so I thought) just the toy factory. The toy factory was VERY interesting indeed. I had seen these kind of laborers on tv documentaries but never in real life. The working conditions and wages were beyond insufficient. Most of the workers were female and I won’t lie, the air was a little bit hard to breathe in, I wasn’t having as difficult a time as others but still the air was definitely tainted by all the spray paint. We had a Q&A session after the tour. I was surprised that they answered some of our questions because many of them dealt with workers rights. I figured that they would ... read more

Today we were going to another village, only this time it wasn’t in the center of the city and was more than a 10 minute walk. We took a bridge into this tiny village that seemed both welcoming and confused at the same time. These two little girls were like little hellions the way they kept following us and screaming, laughing, and calling us “inhuman” (apparently because we weren’t Chinese and didn’t speak Chinese, so they kept saying how we didn’t speak ‘human’ language. I dint mind the girls too much until they began to interfere with our tour i.e. stealing Dr. To’s mike so that they could yell at us to not speak English. Then I thought, “hm…where the heck are their parents to get them out of here??”after another long boring lecture we took ... read more

Ok, today we were supposed to be going into the urban village in the middle of the city. It was sort of funny because during lecture Jack had warned us that we could potentially get robbed (or worse) and that we shouldn’t do ANYTHING that would warrant any unnecessary attention—So basically scaring the poop out of us. It sucked today too, because it acid-rained again. So we weren’t really sure if we were still going to leave. But the rain eventually stopped so we leave in small groups lead by one Chinese group tour guide. The urban village turned out to be nothing like what Jack described it as!! I was kind of mad because I ended up not bringing my camera for fear I’d get attacked and robbed but I then I realized then that ... read more

Sun yat sen university is very large and hot. Today we had a tour of the campus and met all of our Chinese tour guides. The funny thing is, i remembered all of their names but couldn't remember whose name belonged to what face. At the end of lectures we all went to the mall to eat and for site seeing purposes. me, Layla, Dan, and Jackie all ate together at another Japanese restaurant. After eating we headed to the arcade floor. The arcade was a lot larger than it appeared from the outside, it had bumper cars dance games, drumming games, shooting games, sports games; EVERYTHING! At first I went in with a group of 4, Layla, Dan, Jackie, and myself but after Jackie left leaving me with Layla and Dan, I decided to ... read more

Asia » Macau » Taipa Island July 10th 2011

So today when I went to get breakfast I realized I couldn’t find my meal card. So I ended up just walking in anyways and eating my free meal. Because we were leaving today for Guangzhou we all had to be packed and ready in the lobby by 9am. Today we went to the Macau museum for another lecture on Macau from a cultural perspective. After that I bought another shot glass in the museum souvenir store. And then we proceeded into this very interesting tourist town. This part of Macau that we were in resembled the European style of architecture even down to the tiles they used instead of tar. I found a dairy queen!! So naturally I order a kit-kat blizzard, it was amazing! Then we ate Japanese style in some building and after ... read more

Asia » Macau » Taipa Island July 9th 2011

So we entered Macau today. We entered by ferry. It was about an hour long ferry. Once we entered Macau the first thing I noticed was that everything was trilingual. The instructions were in Cantonese, Portuguese, and English. It was so strange to see streets and buildings in Portuguese in Southern china. So we board a bus and head towards a fancy restaurant but meanwhile all you can see are casinos everywhere! And I mean EVERYWHERE. Every other building was a casino! This gaming industry in Macau was definitely no joke! So we eat at this fancy restaurant and after that head to our hotel. After that we had a lecture on gambling and “Macau the sin city”. I’m going to skip the lecture because in all honesty nobody paid much attention. I actually videotaped everyone ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » The Peak July 8th 2011

Well today started off just like every other day wake up late, rush to eat, complain about lecture being too long, and then going to lecture. But today was actually extra special because we all had to pack our stuff up that day because we were leaving for Macau and Guangzhou. The Taiwanese students wouldn’t be returning to Hong Kong University so they especially had to pack early. I was so happy though because right before we left for Victoria’s peak we saw Sunnie!! I was very happy about that. We couldn’t be talk for long because we had to leave for Victoria’s peak and pack our suitcases into storage. At first, after getting off the bus, we just walked around hong kong’s malls like always, then we went to eat in a restaurant that served ... read more
