OK... FINALLY a good Internet connection! So first some thoughts on Greece... Love it! Reminds me of my extended family :) Greeks sure know how to have a great time! I'm not sure though, if anyone actually works in this country... during the day, all the cafes, restaurants are always full, and people in the streets shopping. The afternoon is for siesta - we forgot about this and mistakenly go for walks during this little break to get a bite to eat - slim pickings! The one thing that strikes me is the amount of smoking that goes on! Everyone here smokes, and you can't get away from it. In restaurants, hotels, and hospitals - you name it! You go out to a restaurant or cafe, and the first thing they bring you is an ashtray. ... read more

Well, the last few days have been interesting to say the least... We actually had a really good cycling day out of Alexandroupolis.... It was Sunny, Clear, a bit cold, but we had a tail wind for a change... We made it to Komotini by 11am - which is where we were supposed to spend the night, but since we were having such a great day, we decided to push on to Xanthi, which was another 50K... I'm certainly glad we did, because this morning, it was cold AND it started raining with only 15K left to our destination. We finally got into Kavala before it really started coming down. Barry was actually nice - he sat me down at a Cafe, ordered me a cappuccino and went to look for a hotel. Kavala is actually ... read more

OK I'm done my bitching from yesterday - As you might have been able to tell, yes I was pretty grumpy. After a nice dinner (actually the food was not too great but I didn't care) and a long sleep - I am MUCH happier today. We got up this morning around 6 and the wind was just a howling. Thankfully, Barry decided it was a good idea to stay put. It is actually probably borderline dangerous winds. So I'm glad about being able to spend another day here. Alexandroupolis is a cute little city situated on the Aegean Coast, about 20 or so Km from the Turkish border in a region called Thrace. An interesting region at that – historically it has been a big melting pot of Greeks, Turks, nomadic (gypsy-like) tribes and Slavic ... read more

I probably jinxed myself with my last entry when I said I was thankful we weren't cycling INTO the wind. Today can go down in the record books as being the worst winds I have ever cycled into. I honestly didn't think we were going to make it into Alexandroupolis. Barry had Bike trouble; we lost about an hour with that. We were still climbing a bit and then the winds started blowing out of the South. Not just blowing a bit.... But freakishly blowing. I wouldn't be surprised if they were over 50km wind gusts. We finally crossed the border around 1pm with still 50Km to go. We got a really warm welcome on the Greek side. The cycling was just torture for the rest of the day. Nothing more to say. TORTURE. I just ... read more

Sorry for the late update – Hotel didn’t have Wi-fi – actually they did, but no one seemed to know the password. We left Marmarereglesi after a late start and some breakfast… I do love sleeping in! The day started off pretty good – we had the first 20 K knocked off in about an hour and it looked as though we would have a good tail wind for the remainder of the day… We hit our first big town, Tekirdag, and the hills started. Hill after Hill, warning signs for trucks – “Steep Hill 7%grade 2800M” F@$k!!!!!! There is nothing more disheartening, that finishing a 2800m climb, and seeing another 700M to go. The downhill portion was of course a bit of payback, but it didn’t even seem enough. The tailwind didn’t help, except that ... read more

Today was our first day of cycling... ugggh... Barry, true to form, bolted out of bed like a kid on Christmas morning... I will never, ever, ever figure that one out. Who in their right mind jumps out of bed at the first stroke of the alarm, to load up their bike with 60 pounds of gear and ride 100km? Not even hitting snooze once! I was not so accommodating... At least we get to sleep in this trip... All our trips in the tropics necessitated a 4:00am wake-up and on the road before sunrise so as to avoid the mid-day heat. Seeing as the sun doesn't rise until about 7ish... we "slept-in". Getting out of Istanbul was a bit insane... Luckily, we had bike "trails" (if you can call them that) for about 20K or ... read more

After a disappointing dinner, Barry and I decided to experience a Turkish Bath... We went to one of the most famous baths in Istanbul, The Cemberlitas Hamami, built by architect Sinan in 1584. It is one of the most important works of the 16th century Ottoman architecture. As I have never experienced a Turkish bath before - I had no idea of what to expect... Barry had apparently visited one in Damascus years ago so was familiar, I however, was not. We signed up for the "luxury package" and Barry went off to the men's section, and I the women's. I was led to a locker room, and given a towel and slippers. I then was escorted into a huge, domed steam room, totally clad in white marble. The "attendant" then proceeded to whip off my ... read more

Well after an action packed day 2, How can you beat getting tear-gassed? We stayed away from the part of the city with the IMF conference... we saw the police chopper in the distance and stayed in Sultanhamet... Still LOTS to see... This place is just packed with history... Today, we had to take our bikes to the shop to get fixed.. Unfortunately, the plane ride wasn't that kind on them. I had a soft brake, and Barry’s rim was bent. So first thing we made our way to the shop.. The gentleman that owned the bike shop was a professional cyclist himself... He managed to fix mine up in no time, but we had to leave Barry's there for the day. So after bringing my bike back to the hotel, we set out to see ... read more

Well today was an interesting day.... Started out pretty normal... Sunny and hot today - good change from yesterday :) we started off at the Blue Mosque, although we just stayed on the grounds.. We are going to go back later when we are dressed more appropriately... in order to enter a mosque, arms and legs must be completely covered, and women must wear a headscarf. The headscarves were available at the entrance, however we were both wearing shorts, so we decided we would come back later. Quite a spectacular building - can't wait to see it inside! Over across the street to Aya Sophia - built in 537 AD by Justinian I as a Christian Basilica - the forth largest in the world I might add... the building has seen several additions, conversions and restorations ... read more

Istanbul - Day 1 The flight over was pretty smooth, small delay in Calgary, and small children sitting behind us kicking our chairs for 8 hours... other than that...The movies were good so they kept me from strangling them. We got into Istanbul at 1pm, I was dead tired... Little bit of a panic episode, while they tried to find our bikes... turns out they were just "slow" to unload them... but it was about 20min or so after everyone else got their bags, that we got our bikes. I don't think I remember seeing Barry so stressed! Anyway, after an hour an half trying to put the bikes together, I was getting antsy and I’m now sooo tired, my eyes are rolling to the back of my head. We still don't know if we have ... read more
