Our first full day in Lomé got off to a good start. After my last entry, we were walking down the main strip and saw a sign for another hotel. We checked it out and took it right away. It's a nice, quaint place owed by a French expat. Clean, quiet and friendly. Finally we can relax. After moving out of out first hotel, we wandered down to La Grande Marcheé, really almost the same as the one in Accra. We had a wonderful 3 course meal, where Barry ate a Pigeon (Yuck). But it was probably one of the best meals I have had since we arrived in Africa. I had a crème bruleé appetizer made with sundried tomatoes and fresh basil. mmmm... This morning, he headed to La Marcheé des Fetisheurs... Or the Fettish ... read more

The pain has finally ended... We made it all the way to Lomé... So out of Accra after our long and torturous 150km ride into the city. The morning had started off fabulously.. paved shoulders, great highway and a wicked tail wind. We put in 90 km before 11:00 and found a clean highway restaurant to have lunch. This would be the first any only time on our trip that we've had a proper lunch. After lunch however, the wind changed directions and we got caught in a monsoon. We waited out the storm in somebody's hut until it cleared enough to ride. The ride into Accra itself was a hairy experience to say the least. Apparently greater Accra is only 2.5M people but I would have to dispute that. We were 20km from Accra when ... read more

Well, another early start and we were out of Nkawkaw before 5:30. The ride out was OK, we had beautiful highway all the way to Kumasi. Unfortunately, the only food along the way was eating packaged food from gas stations along the way. I'm becoming to love Shell Stations! Cake and cookies and Milk drink are about it (along with plantain chips!). Barry was having another bad day of cycling and had to take a nap around noon. I have a picture of Barry lying on the ground, and chickens almost pecking his face - It was pretty funny! Kumasi is a city of close to 2M so we were on the outskirts with 15Km to go. We got into town and things are again pretty crazy with Taxis and Tro Tros everywhere. WE finally parked, ... read more

OK, so today started off OK... We got out of Kofftown early and pulled off 40K before 9:00. We stopped at a great restaurant on the side of the highway for breakfast and then pulled into our destination, Nkawkaw (pronounced Nacoco) around 1pm. We found a hotel in town (a modest one, definitely not as nice as we have had, but given that we are leaving first think it was suitable. So I don't know WTF is with the water pressure situation in Ghana, but seriously, it takes me 30 min just to rinse my hair because it is no more than a trickle. I want to scream! When I get home, I am going to sit in my shower for an hour just because I can. Anyway, Barry and I went in search of a ... read more

We left our hotel at 5:30 am - our ride out of Accra was OK, not great but OK. There was a lot of traffic, but most slow moving and we even had bike lanes for part of the ride. Aside from some road construction and THOUSANDS of big ass bats flying overhead it would have been easy. I actually thought these were big birds until Barry pointed out that they were in fact BATS. They were swooping and making all sorts of creepy noises... YIKES! I was a bit freaked... So once we got out of the city and onto a secondary highway, the traffic died down, and things started to look up... WAYYYY up! In once sense, the villages we were riding through, the people were amazingly friendly (Which we had hoped), and the ... read more

So Barry is still sick this morning, so I decided to venture out and find another Internet place. Did I mention how difficult is to find a good high-speed connection? Thus you will probably see no pictures until we get home. WAY to freaking slow. It took 15 min this morning just to open my blog. Anyway - I am on my own, so plan on picking up some groceries and doing some reading at the hotel. On my way out this morning - wow how different it is travelling around town by myself as opposed to being with Barry. Everyone wants to be my friend. I had several people almost follow me back to the hotel - either wanting to sell me something or otherwise... yikes! I told Barry that he wasn’t allowed to be ... read more

OK. I thought Cambodia was rustic - this place is such a strange juxtaposition of modern, derelict, charming and dirty... It's still difficult to have an opinion. We started out day yesterday taking a cab down to Independence Square. This is where past presidents such as Bill Clinton addressed the people of Ghana. The square itself, resembles a soviet-era cement pad with a golden Arch. Kind of strange. It is situated right on the coast, however, all access to the views have been blocked. This is true of most of Ghana - they seemed to have turned their backs on the sea. In fact, there are only a few true beaches that are how you and I would know it - most of the beaches are littered with Shanti towns and are used as a public ... read more

Oh Yeah we ARE!! After a gruelling flight (although made somewhat pleasant by the service on Lufthansa) we arrive in Accra around 7pm, slightly later than our scheduled arrival. No major incidences to report other than there was a huge bug on my seat in Calgary which Barry decided he would brush right on to me and I had a freak episode) No problems getting the bikes or going through immigration. Although an ominous experience when the two young lads taking our bikes off the plane requested a tip... (more on that) Leaving the airport made us really thankful that we had made reservations. We had someone from the hotel meet us at the airport and good thing for it was utter chaos! There are literally THOUSANDS of cab drivers here in Accra... All vying for ... read more
