The final day of our postcard from Brussels. Check out time was 11am but as our flight was not until 17:15 we had a full day to explore another part of the city. When Roisin and I visit a new place we like to check out any nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites if possible. We have already visited one UNESCO site during this trip; La Grande Place (Groote Markt by any other name!) There is one other UNESCO site in Brussels; The architecture of Victor Horta. I spoke to Wanda during our walking tour of the city (what a great and appropriate name for a walking tour guide, by the way!!) She mentioned that there are four or five buildings dotted around the city attributed to Horta that fall under the protection of UNSECO. However, the ... read more

I can hear you all singing along as I write!! Even further back than the car towing incident, in 2001, we had plans to visit the battle site where the 1815 battle of Waterloo between the Imperial French army of Napoleon took on the might of the British, Dutch and Prussian allies. You think Napoleon would have learnt his lesson. Only having just escaped from Elba, rather than live his life a free man he decided to stick it out for round two. In case you don’t know your history (or Abba songs), the next line of the ditty is, Napoleon was defeated… Before I carry on, it is probably best that I provide a potted history of this tyrant with the nickname, the Little Corporal. After attending military school, ... read more

I’m still seething from the events of yesterday although we both had a good night’s sleep so I guess the incident hadn’t played on my mind too much. Today we had planned to take a walking tour through the narrow and winding streets in the old town of Brussels. Our hotel is an aparthotel so whilst there is a small dining area behind the reception, at €14 per person per day for breakfast, it was much cheaper to visit the super market and stock up on provisions as our room comes fitted with a kitchenette - complete with hob, microwave, kettle and even a dishwasher. The downside is that there is no servicing of the rooms during our stay so we have to make do with the same rather small and tired looking towels in the ... read more

On 2nd August 2018, Roisin and I walked out of the doors of HMRC for ever. The day had finally arrived. We are now retired (although not officially retired until 3rd September 2018). The most popular question to ask retirees is: ‘Now what are you going to do with your time?’ However, the few people that asked Roisin or myself this question knew, in their heart of hearts, what they answer would be!! When we both became partially retired twelve months ago no one asked us the question: ‘Now what are you going to do with the extra two days per week?’ I can now, however, reveal how one of us has spent most of HER partial retirement…..making travel arrangements for when we retire!!! As of 2nd August 2018 we had twelve ... read more

At around 03:15, after two nights in port, the Oriana finally left the ‘apex’ of our trip. With two days at these inhuman temperatures, the ship was well and truly broken!! As the Oriana had experienced -25°C, this had caused pipes to freeze and crack. Chaplin’s Cinema was under several feet of water on deck 8. As there is nowhere for the water to go except down, Lord’s Tavern, on deck 7, directly below, also suffered and became out of bounds. There were leaks all over the ship with some toilets out of operation. Aircon also suffered as the pipes in the fan coils had frozen and some had cracked so the cabins remained stuffy and warm. The captain stated that he checked the ship’s previous log for this destination and it turned out that the ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Alta March 3rd 2018

Alta, the apex of our trip. After this port we turn around and head back South so it was now or never. I’ll cut straight to the chase…we saw them!! The Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights. For those of you who don’t know or who think they know but aren’t too sure, here is the science bit: The Northern Lights, or to give them their scientific name, aurora borealis form when charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare penetrate the earth's magnetic shield and collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere. These collisions result in countless little bursts of light, called photons, which make up the aurora. Collisions with oxygen produce red and green auroras, nitrogen produces the pink and purple colours whilst helium produces an orange hew. With ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Tromsø March 2nd 2018

Tromsø is 186 miles inside the Arctic Circle. At 71,000 inhabitants, it is the principle city of Northern Norway and is the largest European city to lie within the Arctic boundary. It is more northerly than Orkney, Iceland and even most of Alaska….and we’re not done with travelling North yet!! Tromsø is situated on Tromsøya island in the area of Trom and has a fast expanding population. This is due to the relatively mild climate for a town that is so far North. The mercury very really falls below -15 in winter which is comparable with the climate in the countries capital, Oslo. I was expecting to see ice floes as we sailed in to Tromsø but I was informed that due to the Gulf Stream, the water in these parts never freezes over. Tromsø boasts ... read more

We arrived in Åndalsnes at 8:00am to clear skies and stunning scenery. This is just another of your typical fjord like communities. The snow-covered mountains swept down to the shore of the Romsdalsfjord. There were peaks in every direction giving the illusion of a town that is cut off from the rest of civilisation, yet with a population of approximately 2,500 life just goes on as normal. The temperature today is a chilly -11°C. A purpose-built quay has been constructed for cruise ships and the loch is deep enough for the modest sized ships to come along side. There is no need for a tender today!! We came ashore at 10:30, well wrapped up. The first thing noticeable was the wind. Whilst it wasn’t exactly gale force, the chill factor made the air temperature plummet which ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway February 26th 2018

Several years ago, Roisin and I visited Iceland hoping to see a phenomenon that is the Northern Lights. On that occasion, whilst experiencing amazing scenery, the nearest we got was a slightly green hue of the overcast skies. There was obviously some activity happening but nothing to write home (or a blog) about!! Despite driving to the edge of a housing estate where it was relatively free of light pollution and sitting, waiting for several hours, it was to no avail. I’m sure I saw a few curtains twitch. I’m surprised we never had a visit by the local constabulary as the only unusual activity in the area were these two strangers dressed in dark clothing sitting in a car, waiting…watching….The Police are obviously used to this kind of behaviour from over-keen foreigners!! We are now ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg (aka Nürnberg) December 22nd 2017

The end of the road. Nuremburg. If the boat had been using a sat-nav/ GPS, we would have heard those famous words: ‘You have reached your final destination!!’ It started raining, although quite a mild temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. Our organised tour in to Nuremburg was not until 13:30 so we had the morning free to decide if we wanted to go. Other than the more popular ‘optional’ excursion of the WWII tour, one of the more unusual excursions was to a pencil factory!! Nuremberg, I understand, is the pencil capital of the world (not many places can claim that distinction!) for they don’t just have one pencil factory but Nuremberg is home to the two largest manufacturers and distributors of pencils in the world in Stædtler and Faber-Castell.As Stan Laurel once said ... read more
