Formed by 2 huge volcanoes, Maui is Hawaii's second largest Island. It only lies about 80 miles west of Oahu so with the Sapphire Princess saying goodbye to Honolulu, she dropped anchor off the coast of Maui (Lahaina) in the early hours of Tuesday morning (28th September 2010). Until now, the main benefit of the cabin being right at the bow of the ship is that there is no noise from late night revellers (although Chris and Roisin weren't expecting the 'piss heads' express on this cruise!!) and no vibration or whirling from the engine room or propeller shafts. Now for everyone not familiar with the lay out of a ship, the anchor locker is usually at the front in the bow. ‘Dropping' anchor' means pressing a button or pulling a lever and letting 80 ton ... read more

After slightly over 2098 nautical miles (don't know what this is in proper miles – look it up!) and 4 solid days at sea, the Sapphire Princessmoored at Honolulu at 7am (6pm UK time) on Monday 27th September 2010. Honolulu means 'sheltered bay' or ‘place of shelter' in English. It is officially the biggest city in the world. Its municipal boundaries reach across 540,000 square miles of the Pacific, most of which is under water!! That also means that the fish are the officially recognised residents of this city with the human race being the ethnic minority being outnumbered by 1,500,000:1!!! ‘Aloha' is the Hawaiian word that means ‘greeting' and is similar in use to the Italian ‘Ciao'. The roots of the word ‘Aloha' date back 5000 years when 2 scousers, adrift in the ocean, fell ... read more

Yes indeedy! Chris and Roisin's last day at sea before hitting their first port of call – Honolulu on Oahu Island was greeted at 7am by the brightest rainbow. You could actually see where the rainbow ended. Not on the horizon as one would expect but actually in the middle of the Ocean. Roisin thought for a second that she could see a little green person bobbing in the sea holding on to a shiny cauldron muttering 'keep yer teevin' hands of me gold, begorrah!! 4 days in to the cruise and Chris and Roisin have not really taken part in any activities preferring instead to ‘sun it up' on deck and ‘pamper it up' in the thermal spa suite. So today to break the mould they decided to work out those brain cells (note the ... read more

This is Chris and Roisin's 3rd day at sea without sight of land, any other ship or plane. The sun is beating down relentlessly. Provisions ran out some time ago. Despite there being an ocean full of the stuff, water is no longer available. (although they're still serving cocktails in the Explorers bar, deck 7!!) Teody, their cabin steward has offered himself to be eaten. He says it would be a great honour and privilege to be consumed by such nice people. On the plus side, Roisin learned how to decorate an egg!!!! There is a wide diversity of people on board from all walks of life. Chris and Roisin have yet to find another couple that are still gainfully employed. There are those who are seasoned travellers and have amassed over 150 cruise days with ... read more

The 2nd full day at sea, Honolulu bound. At 11am the bridge made an announcement that Whales could be seen off the starboard bow. "Bloody hell!" Chris exclaimed, 'we haven't come very far. Where are we now? Just passing around the Great Orme??!' In reality (and Chris actually knew this but couldn't resist the chance) there were 2 young hump back whales blowing less that 50 yards from the hull of the ship. Chris and Roisin just so happened to be at the right place at the right time (but minus a camera so you'll just have to take their word for it!!) It's a pity there is no such species of whale called a klingon otherwise Chris would have paid to hear the navigation officer say, yes, you've guessed it, “Captain, Klingons off the starboard ... read more

Chris and Roisin's first wake up at sea was at 8am when a knock came at their door. It was the cabin steward with breakfast. Nothing too strenuous just the usual danish, cereal, yoghurt, fruit (and fruit juice), tea and/or coffee. This was not going to be the rule but as this service was included they thought they'd give it a try. They were adamant to give the gym a whirl. At least if this is the only day they use the equipment it will go down on record as having 'given it a go'!! The gym is amazing! State of the art. AND FREE!! There are at least a dozen hi-tech treadmills a number of cross-trainers, bikes (sit up and beg ones as well as the ‘easy rider' type!) and weights to tone bits of ... read more

Today is the day Chris and Roisin board the slow boat to Australia. The first port of call will be Honolulu on Oahu. The journey will take 4 days and is approximately 2108 nautical miles (don't ask the difference, we just know it's a bloody long way!!) During Chris & Rosin's time in San Fran, they had found the cruise terminal but it was at Pier 35 and not pier 27 as mentioned in the travel docs. Roisin had the nouse to consult Trip Advisor. Someone had posted that the reason for the switch was that there were 4 cruise ships in port today, the Norwegian Jewel, the Celebrity Millennium, one other and the most important one of all – the Sapphire Princess. The evidence was that there seemed to be more tour coaches in the ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42 Chris was skimming the pages of a San Francisco travel guide when it suddenly dawned on him – "The wiggly road thing. We forgot to visit it!" he exclaimed. So that settled it. Wednesday was scheduled to be a day of relaxation, and a night at the Opera. Chris and Roisin were out of the hotel and heading for the cable car to take them to Lombard Street, the crookedest Street in the world. Now, there were two cable car routes. One stopped at one end of Lombard Street and the other stopped at the bottom of Lombard Street. As the Powell-Hyde branch of the cable car ended at Fisherman's Wharf, Chris and Roisin decided to take the Powell-Mason line. This should be less busy. It only stopped 2 blocks away from Lombard ... read more

Chris and Roisin were up this morning at 07:30. Their plan today was to visit Alcatraz and then take a stroll through Fisherman's Wharf stopping off at the famous sea lions basking in the sun. As it turned out, the weather was a glorious 78ºF so the seals should be out in force today. After the obligatory bagel and coffee at Centos deli, the cable car conveniently ran past this establishment that would take them directly to Fisherman's Wharf. From there is would be only a short walk to Pier 33 to catch the ferry to Alcatraz. Chris and Roisin were warned that this tour is normally full of (English) tourists. The queues for tickets could be quite lengthy so one is recommended to get there early to ensure a place on the ferry. Not one ... read more

When travelling East to West, jet lag can be a real killjoy. Chris and Roisin finally turned in about 9pm on Saturday night. That would be 5am UK time!!! Come 3.45 am Sunday morning both of them were wide awake. Fortunately as they both realised that they were on holiday, neither of them could be arsed to get up so they turned over and managed to get some further rest!!! They arose at 8am and as breakfast was not included in their accommodation, found a local deli where a cream cheese bagel and americano was very welcome. Today was the day Chris had been waiting for, for 28 years. Ever since he received a San Francisco baseball cap he has supported the SF Giants. It feels as if he has come home! The game started at ... read more
