Geo: 35.9746, -112.126We planned a layover at the Grand Canyon on the way home, then a leisurely drive north through more astounding canyon country to Kanab, Utah, north past Bryce Canyon National Park (didn't visit it this time, though) and over to I 15 straight north. This country is one red butte after another--almost more than the eye can absorb. We spent sunset and sunrise at the Grand Canyon. Sunset was pretty okay, but the next morning was overcast until around 9 or so, when the sun finally started peeking through and we could begin to see detail in the canyon walls. We especially got a kick (no pun intended) out of the elk cavorting and frolicking--we'd never seen elk play like that. This hotel was wonderful with comfy beds, large breakfast and helpful staff. We highly recommend it to ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Phoenix March 26th 2010

Geo: 33.4479, -112.083Made it back to Phoenix FINALLY. We keep discovering stuff--like how you can drink the water right out of the tap and the room key's just this credit card thing-y.No medialunas for breakfast, either.Already I miss Argentina but I love Arizona, too. Bob's so happy to be able to just talk to anybody anywhere and have real coffee. You'd be amazed at how well he's done with the language, though. He doesn't think so, but he knows enough to get by now, and that's REALLY something. That is not easy. And I actually dreamed in Spanish last night. I was talking away in my dream --you know how you do--and when I woke up I realized I'd been speaking in Spanish and not translating in my head. I have to keep up my Spanish classes ... read more

Geo: 33.7481, -84.3909Our flight out of Buenos Aires was two hours late last night due to electrical problems, so when we finally got to Atlanda this morning, we'd missed our connection to Phoenix. The next flight they booked us on was oversold, as were all Atlanta flights to Phoenix today, so we re-routed through Washington, D.C.We're sitting in the Reagan airport in D.C. hoping this next plane into Phoenix will have a seat. We got the last two on the flight here, so we're crossing our fingers and trying to take it all in stride. We've been 22 hours and counting, now. When you miss a flight they automatically re-assign you to the next one, but it there's no seats it ends up being an un-funny joke.... read more

South America » Argentina March 24th 2010

Geo: -34.5761, -58.4088Our last day in Argentina. Estoy triste. Perhaps we never come back--we've been from one end of this country to the other and most places in-between, but then again we know how this country works now. When our bus rolled into Retiro bus terminal yesterday I was remembering the first time we were in that thing, three years ago. It's vast--bigger than most cities we've visited. There are 50 bus platforms below and 75 above where buses pull up, load up, and head out again. It's an amazing feat of organization with hundreds of different bus companies all coming and going in a dizzying blur. I was so confused and overwhelmed that first time I just sat down and cried. How would we ever find our way? But we did. What three years ago ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Fe » Rosario March 22nd 2010

Geo: -32.95, -60.6667Rosario hugs the banks of the winding Parana river four hours north of Buenos Aires. The same Parana that forms Iguazu Falls on the Argentine/Brazilian border another 1,041 km up river.Perhaps Rosario's greatest claim to fame comes from it's being the birthplace of the Argentine flag. It makes this claim and even has a gigantic memorial in commemoration, but quiet Entre Rios on the other side of the river says that since the flag was born on an island in the Parana--which islands belong to Entre Rios--the monument and all the whoopla should be theirs.Oh well. It's here now.We spent our one day there walking and shopping and enjoying the beautiful sunshine. As unique as the city is, it was the hostel that Rosario will be remembered by. South America » Argentina » San Luis March 19th 2010

Geo: -32.35, -65.0333Why are there no Nortes here? I know, we call ourselves Americans, but isn't that a slap to those of Latin America, who are also Americans. 'Course, they don't call themselves Americans (do they?), but it's still a little arrogant of us, so I prefer to call us what the Paraguayans called Kathleen when she was there in the Peace Corps--Nortes.So why do our countrymen not come to Merlo? Shopkeepers tell us they almost never see anyone from the United States here. It's knock your socks off beautiful in the most laid back, relaxing way possible. When you're not jumping off cliffs with a kite strapped to your back you can go 4x4ing or trekking or even throw your money away at the casino. This place has everything except smog, pollution and English. There are no ... read more

South America » Argentina » San Luis March 18th 2010

Geo: -32.35, -65.0333We love this town! Maybe it's the high concentration of negative ions like they say, or maybe it's the exquisite climate--purported in all the marketing hype to be one of three micro climates in the world, or maybe it's just because it's warm and sunny and rains only at night. But it's a favorite, right in there with Junin de los Andes and Salta. If you google this place you'll learn that it had an 85% increase in population in the last 10 years. Phenomenal. All the talk about the micro climate and the negative ions may or may not be part of the reason, but it's a grand little place and if you come, you'll love it.There's paragliding, ziplining, 4x4ing, trekking, fishing, swimming, handball, volleyball, golf and tennis. And when you're done there's a pool ... read more

Geo: -32.35, -65.0333I'd known there were people living in wild places like this, but I'd never had them cook me lunch.Bob and I took a 4x4 tour into the Sierras de los Comechingones, the mountains outside of Merlo that form a natural border between the provinces of Cordoba and San Luis. We drove to the top-- 2200 meters, or 7,217 feet, and hiked to a beautiful waterfall from there. The top stretches out forever. This sucker is w i d e, none of this pointy top business here, the tops of these mountains extend for miles--7 km in width and hundreds of kilometers in length. And they're rocky. I don't mean like the Rocky Mountains are rocky, I mean like somebody dumped a pile of rocks on top of bedrock rocky. But somehow there's enough soil for grasses, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Villa Carlos Paz March 14th 2010

Geo: -31.4, -64.5167We hadn't done anything fun for days and were sick of ourselves. So when the taxi came we asked him what any stupid foreigner would: Is there a golf course around here? What's the guy gonna say? Yea, there's one just around the corner? Not when he can take us to one waaaaaay out in the boonies. It was beautiful--Nicklaus designed--but after driving 50 miles it's-- what else?--closed. So now what do we do? We already owe this guy an arm and a leg for getting us out this far. Do we have him take us back into town and forget the golf, or do we drive another 10 km (he claims) to a different course and then take a bus back to town because we'll be too broke to hire another taxi? Oh yes, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Villa Carlos Paz March 12th 2010

Geo: -31.4, -64.5167Don't eat at the restaurant Ambrogioff in Carlos Paz. It's beautiful with a lovely view, but it's overpriced and has lousy food. My grilled chicken was not edible--dry and stringy on a bed of mushy overcooked vegetables. It was just before quiting for siesta and this was obviously something left warming in the oven a couple hours too long. So they carried it away and asked if I wanted to order something else.OK. I ordered raviolis with four cheese sauce. Even under a heat lamp I figured it'd be okay.It came to me with thick gooey white slop over some wrinkled noodles microwaved dry and tough where they weren't embedded.Story is, we ended up paying for all three entres. Bob had okay pork chops. We even paid extra for the butter for Bob's bread ... read more
