Geo: 33.3958, -110.789This was a spur of the moment deal. The carpet cleaners were here at the house and we needed to go someplace while the place dried. Where to go? Someplace close and interesting---someplace we hadn't seen yet... Always a sucker for scenic roads, we took off east to Globe. While not what you'd call picturesque itself, the road there goes through the beautiful Queen Creek canyon. Bob says it's 80 miles of driving for 2 miles of scenery let's-don't-ever-come-here-again, and that's one way---but we learned something.Globe is the center of the copper world--so they say (the #1 producer for Arizona, anyway). After we left the canyon we came to a string of decrepit mining towns put together from garage sale left-overs. The towns were pretty yukky but the mines were Impressive---capitol I. You could ... read more

Geo: 33.5264, -111.389We drove up into the desert mountains taking the scenic byway from Apache Junction east of Phoenix to Roosevelt Lake. Bob calls these dry desert hills ugly. We get that way living our privileged lives in beautiful Montana--but I think they're amazing. I love the FEELING of these rough, unforgiving hills around me. Driving or walking through these gullies and ravines --- there's a feel to it totally unlike a stroll along a green valley stream. There's a reason why pictures of this land are taken in the spring or at sunset. It's gray. It's sandpaper rough and sticker-y everywhere you put your foot. And it's hardpan dry. But if you'll take the time to get out of your car and look closely you'll see the orange in the cliffs and the tiniest wildflowers ... read more

Geo: 37.0475, -112.526We like Kanab. It's not as touted as Moab, nor as cute as Springdale, nor as dramatic as Lee's Ferry, but we love that it's surrounded by red. Red is big with me.Red walls, red canyons, red apples...The drive from Kanab to Sun Lakes is beautiful--our whole trip has gone through great country, but this route goes through the the mountains to Jacob Lake where you turn off to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, then down, down, down past the Vermillion Cliffs on a national scenic route, Lee's Ferry, pass another turn off to the Grand Canyon, into Flagstaff and then really down, down, down into the valley of the sun and Phoenix. It was like coming home again.... read more

Geo: 37.1753, -113.289So for my birthday this year I got an unbelievably gorgeous day in Zion National Park and LOTS of sunshine. I am a happy camper. Zion park has made what what has to be one of the smartest decisions ever and perhaps one of the dumbest. A shuttle bus similar to one in the Grand Canyon takes camera-touting tourists to the most visited places in the park, dropping off and picking up every 10 minutes or less. It's an ecological no-brainer and when will Yellowstone get smart I ask you? On the bus I struck up a conversation with the guy holding the biggest lens. Turns out, he was a professional photographer from St. George, hitting the park almost daily waiting for the leaves to show a little more color. He was kind enough ... read more

Geo: 42.3222, -111.297This was the last week the roads through Yellowstone and Teton National Parks were open so we grabbed at the chance. The sky was clear and cloudless as we drove up the Gallatin Canyon from Bozeman, and weather reports promised it would stay that way. They were right. The day was gorgeous. We'd never been in the parks in the snow and while down low it was dry, the passes were snow-packed and icy and the trees laden with the previous day's snowfall.... read more

Geo: 45.6793, -111.033As always, it was a wonderful stay at Jean's house visiting with the Morgan's and the Hicko's, but most especially---we got to see the new horse, which looks alot like the old horse to horse-less people. But as happy as Mary Rose was with one horse, she's in horse heaven with two. Maybe as happy as Cole was that he could finally go skiing at Bridger! Yes! Enough snow to ski!! At least til it turns 65 in a few days. That kid's happiest with the kind of snowy weather we're running from.... read more

Geo: 45.7836, -108.505We ran up to Red Lodge today for Daisy's IP meeting...you non-handicapped families can think of it as a ramped up parent/teacher conference. Anyway, she was thrilled to have added monthly swimming to her activities for the year. She loves "swimming" even tho, like her mother, it consists mostly of splashing around in the water and very little actually swimming.Daisy and I walked up to Kari and John's house for a bit before we took her out to dinner and then we had to return to Billings and our Red Lodge trip was done. It was a quickie.Next morning we were off to Bozeman.... read more

Geo: 45.7836, -108.505We wore a strange collection of...things, but it was an impromptu room-to-room trick or treat for family night so we had to wear whatever we were treated (or tricked). Good thing there were no cameras out, cause Becky and I both ended up wearing somebody's undies in un-customary chic.I'd brought with us a bucket of dollar store funzies for the kids which, unfortunately for the parents, included hand clappers that Tyler thought were the BEST.I think Jeffrey set a pox on 'em tho, as before we left 3 out of the 4 were non-functional. Tyler however, was just as happy with half a clap. ... read more

Geo: 46.8727, -113.996We got to Jim and Stacy's just in time to help Stacy stuff octupus legs. Bright red legs barely wide enough for a hand and as long as your leg. Keith wanted to be a red octupus and red octupus it was--he turned out to be the cutest dang cephalopod mollusc in Missoula--of any color. We had a good visit which included a beautiful walk up the Rattlesnake. I definitely have to go back with the camera because it's really, really nice.We left the next morning for Billings.... read more

Geo: 48.1958, -114.313Snow was coming, so we headed north in a hurry. At lunch in Kanab we found out the storm was heading for Kalispell--probably on Tuesday--so we skipped any more sight seeing and hit the trail. We only had snow over Monida pass though, the rest of the trip was mostly sunny with the most beautiful drive possible up Flathead lake. The next morning we woke to snow though, so we had made it just in time.It was an incredible five months, but it's good to be home.... read more
