Day 20. The ash seems to have stoped falling but the smoke may be worse due to the fire in Sicamous. I caught my first whiff as I exited the trailer to make my pancakes, well actually it turned into one large pancake but that’s irrelevant. I buy the “just add water” pancake mix and use eggs for my liquid to get some protein. Let’s be honest, pancakes are just to hold the syrup. That’s what we really want. Being diabetic I’ve discovered all sorts of “no sugar added” or “sugar free” things including pancake syrup. Most of these things contain sugar alcohols which are derived from sugar but the human body doesn’t absorb them like processed sugar. When I passed by Sicamous this morning I saw three water bombers in the air fighting the local ... read more

Day 19. When I stepped outside this morning everything was covered in ash and it continues to fall this evening. I assume it’s from the big fire near Kamloops but Osoyoos is on fire as well. The government has declared a state of emergency for the area and as of this morning 1100 hectares (2700 acres) were burning out of control. Today I decided I would not ride but go to the gym in Sicamous and do some grocery shopping. I tried calling the gym yesterday afternoon but just got voicemail. I tried again this morning and got the same so I went on their website and it showed day passes were available so I gathered my gear and headed to town. When I got to the gym the door was locked with a key pad ... read more

Day 18. After yesterday’s 29Km of gravel road the bike was pretty dirty but I knew I was going to ride another six and a half today so I just left it that way. Again I plotted a route in the GPS last evening so I knew what to expect. What I didn’t expect was how much smoke from the wild fires there was an hour South of here. I took Hwy 1, The Trans Canada Highway, to Salmon Arm that then the fun began as I turned South toward silver Creek and Yankee Flats. Beautiful pavement and lots of twists and turns all the way to Hwy 97. I could see the smoke was getting heavier as the hilltops started to disappear. By the time I got to 97 it was like riding in a ... read more

Day 17. I actually slept until nine this morning. Not straight through but I kept falling back to sleep. It’s been about eight a.m. most days that I didn’t intentionally get up early to move on to the next destination. Yoghurt with raspberries and nuts and then a bacon sandwich chaser got the day going. I finally remembered to put the one gallon gas can in my saddlebag just in case. I also carry a five gallon can of diesel in the Jeep for the same reason. I had a route that included some of the back roads highlighted on the map I got from the owner at the museum yesterday programmed into the GPS from the night before so off I went. The route South of Sicamous along Mara Lake is nice and I stayed ... read more

Day 16. The plan after pancakes was to ride a loop toward Kamloops I had loaded in the GPS last night. I set out as planned with an added stop at Canadian Tire in Salmon Arm to look at a new BBQ I’ve been thinking about. There is nothing wrong with my BBQ, it’s just that I used to have a better one so for some reason I think I need a better one again. Better being more expensive but not necessarily any more functional. Stupid, I know. Despite the website showing two in stock at that store I didn’t see any on the shelf and since I wasn’t prepared to buy it then and there I didn’t ask. Back on the road headed to Monte Creek I saw a sign for the Dreamcycle Motorcycle Museum ... read more

Day 15. 4230Km. Moving day if you will. I’ve moved further into the mountains in Malakwa. The peaks at Rogers Pass are stunning. Photos just don’t do them justice, especially when they are covered in smoke from the wild fires. All the photos look hazy from the smoke. It’s too bad too, the scenery is amazing. I took the quickest route through Golden and Revelstoke but for a second considered a different path that would have involved not one but two ferry crossings. There are many free ferry’s in British Columbia that are free because they are considered part of the highway system. When I arrived at camp or actually before I arrived I noticed helicopters in the sky carrying whatever they call the large bags to water-bomb forest fires. One was filling from a river ... read more

Day 14. This is my last full day in Cranbrook. It seemed like a good day for bacon and eggs since it will be a simple breakfast tomorrow. I decided a ride back to Creston was the route de jour. I’d only been that way once and I found a few secondary roads this time which made for some new pictures. A short ways out of the city a group of about 20 Hells Angels blew past me on a sold line. One in particular cut right back in front of me within feet while another waved as he passed. You’ll find all kinds no matter where you look. Further down the road traffic was stopped for paving and I could see the group ahead. When I got to Creston I pulled into a gas station ... read more

Day 13 The guy on the phone yesterday told me the welding shop opened at eight. I got up at seven, had a banana and gathered some tools to remove the bracket with the broken tab from my motorcycle. It’s not a big job and I’ve done it enough times that it’s not at all intimidating. I did forget that the muffler needs to be removed though. No biggie, two more bolts. I grabbed a protein bar, some peanuts and my gym bag in the hopes that I could drop the bracket off and pick it up later in the day. The gym was quite close and I wasn’t riding anyway. The guy at the welding shop took my part and said hang on a minute. He returned and said the supervisor said if I could ... read more

Day 12. The thunder woke me up last night at some point but I didn’t hear any rain until the next time I awoke at 4:15 but even that wasn’t much. I put the awning out to cover my cooking table and half the bike. Breakfast was PB on toast and yogurt with raspberries and nuts. Quick, easy and minimal cleanup compared to back and eggs. I cleaned the previous days dust off the bike and was off. I decided I’d try the road I stumbled upon a couple days earlier in the opposite direction for a different view. I saw another road on google maps I assumed was a gravel logging road but went to be sure. The first few kilometres turned out to be paved and lead me to a reservoir on the Kootenay ... read more

Day 11. I never actually checked to see if there are in fact hot springs in the city of Radium Hot Springs. I’m bad with sight seeing and tourist destinations. I’m bad at stopping to look at anything which is ridiculous because I have nowhere to be. It was a late start today. I was up much too late last night and once I finally finished breakfast and got mobile I spotted a coupe in the park with a Yamaha FZ-09 which is the previous version of the Tracer 9 GT which currently has my interest so I had to stop and see what his impressions were. Turns out he was a chatty Patty telling me every modification he had done as well as his and his fathers previous bikes. Eleven o’clock and off I go. ... read more
