While I inadvertently explored the roads west of Calgary, the group walked in the gentle green parks of Cochrane. From the Cochrane Ranche parking lot, it was simple to take the path under the 1-A highway and the railway, and follow along the gurgling course of Big Hill Creek. An impressive underpass took the walkers safely across Highway 22, to stride beside the fast-flowing Bow River, high with spring run-off. Thick with puffy white clouds, the Alberta blue sky gave its colour to the water. Along side Jumping Pound Creek, the path turned from its westward direction to head south and eventually to a way back into the town’s beloved parks, filled with families and local walkers. In a quiet moment, a yearling deer unconsciously displayed its downy self, still warmed with remnants of winter fur, ... read more

Three groups of four walkers each set off at intervals to make up our city walk this week. In Griffith Woods, autumn surrounded us: dried grass, bare trees, traces of old snow, hidden animals. Only tiny Wood Violets twinkled spring colour. The excellent path, groomed but natural, cherished our feet for most of the way west along multiple strands of the Elbow River. The still water shone with reflections of treed vistas and sculptural bushes. Everywhere Red Osier Dogwoods shared their bright red branches. In the quiet reaches of the river, mallards slowly drifted and dipped for underwater plant-life. For indiscernible reasons, park maintenance entailed the felling of many trees, some for making the path, but others for purposes left to our imaginations and mildly curious conversation. The trees were left to disintegrate naturally, undoubtedly making ... read more

The sun shone palely on us all morning. A breeze came steadily from the north east all morning. And sparkles of snow showered us all morning. Spring in Alberta! We met to explore Confluence Park , also known as east Nose Hill Park. Divided naturally into a walkers group and a photographers group, we were pandemic safe. The wide Alberta sky showed off the strange humps and bumps of dried grasses in the Nose Creek valley. Indeed, icicles hung like diamond strands in the shelter of a foot bridge, exciting us with what would have been ordinary a month ago. The west arm of Nose Creek rushed past us. A picturesque little waterfall drew us off the pathway. Further along, in calmer waters, the ubiquitous mallard ducks quacked at our presence but kept on div... read more

Summer came to welcome our out-of-city venture in Chestermere by the irrigation canal. We met for a brisk walk in this prairie environment. The fields shone golden, and the cloudless sky reflected blue in the canal along our path. The water level was low, before the snow melt in the mountains fills the irrigation system later in the year. Thus, the bright orange url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boom_(navigational_barrier)#:~:text=A%20boom%20or%20a%20chain,to%20control%20or%20block%20navigation.booms before and after the dangerous weir seemed to be redundant, although signs warned sternly about portage. At first, birds were elusive. A trio of horses substituted interest. At last, we spied a Canada Goose tr... read more

A large group of walkers gathered at Bebo Grove in Fish Creek Park. We broke into two groups and were so socially-distanced that inadvertently two routes were followed. The fresh air and brisk temperatures gave everyone an enjoyable day. Leaving behind the golden grasses near the pond, we immediately began to see birds flitting from crown to crown in the trees. Blue jays , finches and one raven kept us looking up into the aspens and evergreens. In the dull grey brush, dogwood bark shone brilliant red. Fish Creek surprised us with its persistent ice. In low places the path itself was ... read more

On this bright (almost) spring morning, a large group of walkers met at the Weaselhead . Divided into two groups of nine, we headed off towards the Elbow River. The morning light transformed twisted oxbow bends into sculptures of ice and water defined by the low-covered marsh. The Weaselhead Flats to the west shone more brightly than the hazy mountains. Poplar trees in North Glenmore Park reflected the light, revealing the slightest tinges of new green. As the morning warmed, and we stuffed garments into backpacks, the river ice melted into blue pools, which disappeared under the heavier ice of the dam. Cars rushed along the causeway, oblivious to the relaxed joy of our group and the many other walkers gladly escaping their homes. Returning to the starting point, our two groups kept thei... read more

The sun shone on us with autumnal warmth, even while the calendar said winter. The Calgary Greenwaystretches 138 kilometres around the city. We gathered at 16 Avenue and 68 Street NE to explore on foot a section that is usually ignored when we speed by in our cars. As we rounded a curve from 16 Avenue, we began to parallel Stoney Trail, albeit from a good distance. Neighbourhoods full of two-storey houses bordered the other side of the path, and it seemed that each neighbourhood had its own path onto the Greenway. Indeed, more than on any other walk, we encountered people striding and strolling for their daily exercise. We all waved and “helloed”. One couple stopped to talk to me. They wanted to know where we were from, possibly thinking we were a tour group. ... read more

The storminess of the day held off long enough to give us a picturesque walk along the Bow River and into the Inglewood district. We met at Pearce Estate Park and immediately headed down to the Bow River. The delightful smell and sound of crunched leaves accompanied us through the wooded part of the path. The clear blue river was calm enough to act as a mirror for the trees and high rises in the distance. Bridges were geometric exclamations: Nose Creek (CPR) bridge, the Zoo bridge, the George C King bridge, and the memorial to the St George’s Island bridge. We paused at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, talking about the First Nation... read more

After gathering at the Pumphouse Theatreparking lot, we fifteen walkers were immersed in the crackling, fluttering brown leaves of late fall - both the ones that had fallen onto the grass and those futilely clinging to the trees. Under a full sun, the river reflected vigorous blue, presenting a classic panorama of sky and water. The dappled light over the pathway let us forget the snowy cold of the past two weeks. Our leader, Nancy, surprised us by moving away from the pathway, leading across 14 Street to watch kids swooping up and around in the skateboard park. Innumerable times I have driven past the skatepark, but at 60 kmh, only tiny glimpses were possible. On foot, we had fun admiring the twists and tricks exec... read more

Our meet-up in Edworthy Park brought together 17 C hikers for a brisk day draped in vibrant fall colours. Following our leader, Dee, we warmed up in the sunshine as we walked through the park’s playground out to the pathway along the Bow River. The deep yellow grasses were punctuated with sparse, bright-red leaves on Saskatoon bushes, mostly stripped of their dark-blue berries by now. At a different life-stage, bunches of red berries adorned Elder bushes, still draped in pale green leaves. Suddenly our reveries were startled by the blaring horn of a freight train that roared and rattled close beside the walking path. At the bottom of the escarpment, we meandered through nameless woods. Golden leaf-litter led us into magical scenes of reds, oranges, and yellows affixed to dark branches and light popla... read more
