Our presentation at 9:00 this morning was by renowned winemaker, Andres Antonietti, who will accompany us on the rest of our stay in Mendoza. His topic was wine tasting and the international points system for ranking. At our places around a U-shaped table was a form for recording colour, aroma, taste and balance. He reviewed viniculture with us, with which we are gradually becoming familiar. What is new every time is the passion of the speaker, each dedicated to their own vision of “perfect”. He helped us understand each rating category, while emphasizing that our taste was as valid as anyone’s and that liking a wine was paramount. For me, the colour and aroma of the first wine were excellent but the taste and balance were off. Some wines the group rated very low in all ... read more

Another restless night because the street noise is amplified between the buildings. I went down early to get some hot water to drink in my room – and to collect my newspaper with the headlines about Pope Francis. Martin and the receptionist were very impressed that I wanted the local paper on such a propitious occasion. The first few pages were about his life, and included was a poster. Later at breakfast, an older man getting his breakfast while I was getting mine burst out to me, unable to suppress his joy and pride on behalf of Argentinians. He claimed national possession not only of the Pope, but also the Queen of the Netherlands and Maradona! Our bus ride to Mendoza hardly got started before we sto... read more

4:55 p.m. The new Pope was just declared! Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires from the Metropolitan Cathedral, which we visited a couple of days ago. Martin is so excited he has goose bumps. (He has seen the Archbishop many times.) Victor, our Mendoza guide says the new pope is very simple and humble. Of course all the TV stations are covering the story. This afternoon was “compulsory nap” for our late evening at a winery. Indeed needing a nap, I watched TV long enough to see the url=http://abcnews.go.com/International/white-smoke-pope-black-smoke-nope-conclave-smoke/story?id=18719208white smoke. (Who needs Spanish!) Then my nap. Fortunately, I woke up soon enough to wait for a few minutes to watch the announc... read more

With all the visits done yesterday, we had free time this morning until 2:30 in the afternoon. Martin helped with suggestions, revising my goal of the Fine Arts Museum in favour of a walk through the historic district called San Telmo. It is on the same street as our hotel, except on the other side of the Plaza de Mayo. By walking several blocks east first, the redeveloped Madero Docks were the route beside the river. After one easy block, I had to cross a terrifyingly wide street filled with noisy traffic. In best traveller’s practices, I sidled up to other pedestrians and crossed in their wake. This practice continued through a construction site and several more streets both wide and narrow. What a relief to arrive at the port! The red-brick (British) warehouses have be ... read more

Our goal this morning was wine tasting at a sommelierschool. We set off walking with the flowing stream of pedestrians stepping over and around broken pavement and public works. Made a few more efforts to take photos, although the light was too contrasty. We entered a narrow hallway and climbed 1 1/2 storeys – no handrail of course - and we came into a narrow reception, decorated with wine and liqueur bottles from around the world. We had lots of time to examine these and some South American artworks, because it eventually transpired that the sommelier had been booked for the wrong day. Flexibility being paramount in both guiding and touring, our Tuesday morning visit to the Colon Opera House was substituted. More trekking through throngs of pedestrians, cars, motorbikes and trucks. I woke naturally at 7:15 after about nine hours sleep. Perfect! Breakfast was like in Italy, except the white rolls were replaced by white “croissants”, which were not flaky, only crescent-shaped. The ham and salami were the same. This morning a bus tour showed us the highlights of BA, as they call Buenos Aires here. Because it was Sunday, the traffic was very light, and Martin said we could see more things. Don’t know what the additions were. After a bit of a drive, and much frustration trying to take pictures of buildings in narrow streets from the bus window against the sun, we stopped at a marvelous artwork. An architect, Eduardo Catalano, raised $3 million to fund a huge, “functioning”, polished steel flower. Wit... read more

Awake at 4:15 a.m., taxi at 5:00 a.m., through security by 6:15 a.m., depart at 7:28 a.m. (except for de-icing, taxiing, etc.). Just enough time in San Francisco to find my way to the international terminal, wait 20 minutes to check-in (many people with very large suitcases), wait 20 minutes for security, grab a cup of tea to go, discover that the gate was down stairs (not where I was waiting), and wait for boarding. An hour or so into the flight, ate lunch and fell into a profound sleep for about an hour. Watched Lincoln because my seat-mate marvelled at its availability. More marvelous was the long stretch of Mexican land fully lit by afternoon sun below us. After dark, another nap and some reading. In Lima, just enough time to find the ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Kananaskis Country September 28th 2012

Our theme was viewing the larches turning colour; our destination was Kananaskis Country. We drove along the Smith-Dorien for a while and parked at the day use area. The weather was glorious, just a little fall briskness to make us appreciated the sunny blue sky. The first part of the trail was through a valley bottom meadow, easy walking with a few golden larches in the distance as enticement. Once into the treed area, the path headed uphill for the rest of the hike. A few twisted and some lone larches gleamed out of the dark green pines; these stood out because the dark trunks and limbs set off the gold needles. As soon as I stopped to take photos, the faster B group disappeared up the trail. Because it seemed there was only one path, ... read more

Our route this morning took us south through Longview to the Sentinel Recreation Area. My choice was the C group because both the leaders of the B group were fast walkers. Good choice because the whole way to our destination of Grass Pass was up. Our leader stopped every few minutes for a breather and for the opportunity to look into the woods. The aspens were beautiful, lit by a warm wash of light that my camera couldn’t capture. The pale, slightly golden trunks reminded me of birch used to make canoes. Scattered near the path were the last of the wildflowers, mainly Paintbrush and a lovely purply-blue flower I can’t identify. A few squirrels dashed about in the trees and underbrush, only one coming out to have a look at us while he chomped down ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park August 17th 2012

So many people signed up for this walk (73!) that organizers arranged car pools in addition to the bus. Finally walking with Joyce again, we went in her car with Ann and Cecile. The traffic was more obvious in a car, and surprising for so early on a Friday. Perhaps some were getting away early for the weekend, forecast with excellent weather. I had never been to Sunshine , presumably because of its main activity of skiing. The turn-off is a bit west of Banff; the others in the car were exclaiming about how much the road has improved, including paving all the way. As expected, we arrived before the bus – a good opportunity to get to the washrooms first. The disadvantage was that we never were clear on what walking options had been offered ... read more
