This week we had the BBQ to anticipate, thus not needing a lunch in our backpacks. I started the day with my fishcake bunwich breakfast, although another hiker forgot hers at home in the fridge – always a worry of mine. A couple of us shared our snacks with her so she wouldn’t be starving. She did notice lack of energy on our hike. So few people signed up for the B version of the planned walks that the A version was divided into A, slow A, and slower A, plus the C group that walked part way around Lake Kananaskis. I started with the slow A group, but they weren’t tolerating stoppages for photos or breathing. So I let the last person in that group know that I was hanging back for the slower A ... read more

Our trip was supposed to be to Burstall Pass, but the condition report said that there was three feet of water on the trail. So it was announced on the bus that we would go to Ribbon Creek. Outside, it was steadily raining from dark widespread clouds. The C group was dropped off at the Kananaskis Village, which is just a multi-purpose building not far from the hotels. I didn’t feel like spending the day wandering along local paths in the rain, so I took the advice of Wolfgang and Gerdie, sitting in front of me, by joining the B group. Ten minutes later when we arrived at the parking area for Ribbon Creek, the rain had stopped and never came again. I was decked out in my rain pants, fleece, long-sleeved light thermal, rain jacket ... read more

With the advent of July the bus leaves ay 7:30, prompting me to bring breakfast to eat on the bus – salmon cakes in a bun with lettuce spears and a banana. The bus was almost full with 47 participants. Our destination was Kananaskis. Eight of us chose the “C” option, a short walk up to the lake. The other options had 1500 ft in elevation change – too much for me, I think. The initial steep uphill was to the campground (no cars, wilderness permit required for camping). The footing was packed dirt with loose and embedded stones, possibly indicating forestry vehicle access. We all agreed to walk further beside the river into a beautiful valley affording a 360-degree view of mountain peaks, little snow. After not long we encountered a serious stream tumbling across ... read more

An extra-quick drive to Home Road got me to the Montgomery Community Association parking lot by 7:45, well in time for the bus arranged by the Skrastin’s Outdoor Club. Of course there were already other people on the bus, i.e., even earlier than me, and quite a few more came shortly after me. On the dot of 8:00 we left, driving to the Canadian Tire parking lot on Richmond Road. Here Joyce joined me on what became a full bus. We promptly left at 8:15, taking the Bragg Creek road out of town, then onto the Transcanada. After a while, the president of Skrastins Outdoor Club welcomed us and introduced the organizer, Wolfgang, who described the three hikes on offer today. Joyce and I (and most others) had already read about them on the website. At ... read more

You might remember this passage from 2012 January 16 when I bought my saris. A year later, I finished the sari curtains and celebrated with a tea party. “Thus we came to Kanchipuram, home of the best silk weavers and best sari collections. Along the street for about a kilometre or more were open-fronted shops spilling colourful saris and fabrics for men’s clothes. Vendors flapped open the tightly folded cloths for customers to examine. Ranks of parked motorbikes (or two-wheelers as they are called here) hemmed in customers and vendors alike. “Our stop brought us to an indoor store. On the nearest counter were heaps of silk scarves. I asked immediately about the saris and was ushered over to another counter. Before leaving Calgary I had used paint-tint-cards from Home Depot as samples to decide on ... read more

Our last day started with my last dosa (thin, crepe-like) with curried potatoes, which I only just learned is called masala potatoes. It also came with a vegetable gravy. I will miss this breakfast. Plus I had smoked salmon and half a bagel – can’t pass that up. We walked across the street to the Gateway of India. L__ wanted us to hustle but even she couldn’t resist another picture. I got some good ones of the gate and the Taj, both Palace and Tower. Past the Gateway was the jetty for tour boats. L__ rented one boat for our group alone, to be able to control the timing of our leaving (before too many other tourists arrived) and returning (in time for our lunch reservation). Our destination was Elephanta Island and the temple caves. The ... read more

Today the first part of our tour was on the bus, trying to see the historic buildings from British times through the windows. The sun was almost always in the wrong position to take photos, and we could only see bits of the buildings. Frustrating, even though our guide was knowledgeable and interesting in how she introduced the sites and their architecture. Most significant was the last cast-iron buildingin Mumbai – the hotel that refused entry to the “original” Mr Tata, Mumbai businessman, because he was Indian. He got his revenge by opening the Taj Mahal Palace, open to all. Six rupees per room then. Our first stop was at a Jain temple. This one was quite new, with part still under construction. A few weeks ago the historic temple was closed to tourists, because a ... read more

We had a late start: only a one-hour drive to the airport and an uneventful flight. Our arrival at the very modern Mumbai airport was also easy. On the road I was in for a shock! The pollution here is multiple times worse than in the other parts of India we have visited, although smog is persistent all over. We drove for a while through congested traffic. Near the airport are the infamous slums, which I photographed from the air – just like in Slum Dog Millionaire. The colour is deep brown and no light seems to penetrate the covered corridors. Considering the monsoons, having contiguous cover doesn’t seem unreasonable. The huts occupy roadsides and any “spare” land; but, away from the airport there are virtually no slums on our route. Buildings are of all qualities ... read more

Our guide, Cesar, is a lively, experienced guide who speaks excellent English; he obvious has Portuguese mix in his features. He says that Goans are not unhappy with their 450 years of colonial status, but they are glad to be free (since 1961 following an invasion by the Indian army). He is passionate about his Goan identity, and later in the day he waxed long about Indian politics and corruption, plus how the Russians are spoiling the tours industry by dressing and behaving inappropriately. This gravely insulted V__, who was born and lived in Russia. However, apparently some Russians do come for cheap all-inclusives, and they drink and eat too much. They have usually made their money from oil and drugs. Our tour started with two large adjacent churches: Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral. (Bom is ... read more

Our wake-up call was at 5:30 this morning, departure at 6:30 to allow enough time to get to Bangalore(now Bengaluru) in three hours, and through the city in two hours, to arrive at the airport for our 13:05 flight. Just after dawn was an interesting time to see rural India, albeit on a Sunday (no school, most businesses closed). Many bullock carts were being taken “where?” for the day. These have hardly changed in history, except now they use pneumatic tires. The cart is wooden, perhaps 4 feet square, a few a bit longer. Each is pulled by two thin bullocks, some still with decorated horns following the spring festival and Republic Day.The sun rose very orange in the sky, a sign of the terrible air pollution.(I have been wearing my cotton handkerchief over my nose and mouth in the ... read more
