Extraordinary decorations
I've recently visited houses and forts built in the 1800s - Osta Antica kind of knocks the stuffing out of that history. Those marble mosaics would almost be worth your trip by themselves. Wonderful! As for St. Sebastian, I wonder whether he'd have been bothered by being dug up for a notionally greater benefit . . .

Quietness
Judith: I could feel the quietness of the scenery and lack of people. Must have been a beautiful day! Were you overnight?

Quietness
Wonderfully quiet! This was a day trip, enough time to enjoy the outdoors.

WOW
So beautiful. I am trying convince my son- in - law that he should travel in his native country. Best from Berkeley. K.

Not a snow fan . . .
But your pictures are mighty impressive. Well seen; well done.

Snow fan
Easier to be a snow fan when a luxurious hotel is nearby.

Neede rest periods
Whenever we are in Italy we find we need to slow the pace down and move at an Italian pace. Sadly I always eat too much when I'm in Italy. So many temptations.

Rest periods
Eating lengthy lunches and dinners definitely slows the pace of travel in the most enjoyable way possible!

Continuity
What a day! And a great recounting, evoking the wonder of the depth of history you were standing on. How rarely do I turn to look back and appreciate the path that has led to this point, on the grand scale.

Continuity
I am always surprised by the continuity of history. Why? Must be the short-cut of learning dates and memorable occasions, thus missing out on what brought these "historic" moments to be.

Setting
We have ice sculptures in Ottawa, also, but usually either with a deep freeze or a race against melting. And never do we have such a wonderful setting.

Stone and symmetry
These structures (somehow, calling them "buildings" doesn't do them justice) would be impressive built today with concrete. To think they were built when they were, with stone, is amazing. And I liked the "human-scale symmetry" comment. A good reminder to look for symmetry on other scales. And getting started on designs for my own monument . . .

Stone and symmetry
The stone is "soft", rather like sandstone. Still, a marvellous feat of engineering.

Bella Italia
Thank you for transporting me to beautiful Rome for a few minutes today. It was the first European city our parents took us to in the 80s, and it still remains one of my all time favourite cities. Foot pedals in pubic toilets - why don't more places catch on to this excellent invention??? It would make my travel life so much better :)

Tourist Spots
What an amazing day! The more I travel, the more crowded I find tourist spots like the Wall Street bull in New York or the 90-miles-to-Cuba marker in Key West. Are they busier, I wonder, am I less tolerant of crowds,or am I just getting around to seeing the notable sights? Dunno. But the extra effort the crowds drive can be worth it. After all, how else would one get to see the Trevi Fountain?

Tourist spots
As a tourist, I never feel justified in complaining about tourists.

Amazing butterflies
Seeing exotic species close by was enchanting.

Your Room
It appears that you have a twin bed: Is that right? If so, I wonder if this is a Europe thing. When booking rooms in Iceland for an extra night on top of a tour, I saw that some rooms were singles with twin beds, as opposed to the ubiquitous queen-size beds we encounter in North America. And isn't it wonderful how much architecture varies, place to place.
10th January 2018

My room
The single bed was the narrowest possible. North American hotel rooms are designed by efficiency experts, which is why one can enter a room and momentarily forget which city one is visiting. Old buildings in Europe put singles in space extracted from the staircase or in the maids' rooms on the top floor. At least now they are almost all ensuite, which wasn't the case in the late nineties, when I stayed in a few challenging spaces.
