All I know is that this morning, I didn't want to go to work. I hate this job. I called the agency today and told them I'm not sure this is working out. They told me to speak with the assistant principal. So I sat down with him and began spilling out my frustrations. I don't have any keys, and all the freakin' doors are locked in this damn school. (The outside doors are open, but the inside doors are all locked, which makes no sense to me. Stangers could walk in off the street, but I can't even go to the bathroom.) I can't get my own science materials, I have to go through a technician who needs like a week's notice for anything. I don't have any office supplies. I have to ask the ... read more

One of my roommates, Krisztina, the Hungarian, has invited me to go with her friends to Cambridge. Krisztina and I left the house at eight this morning, walked to Gyorgyi's house, and she drove us to Hatfield to pick up Heni. So here I am, the only American among three boisterous Hungarian women. And it's a gloriously sunny day! The first thing we do is tour the famous University, which I found out is actually comprised of three smaller universities--St. John's, St. Katherine's, and Trinity. The only one we tour is St. John's, and we aren't permitted to go inside any of them. It's sooo beautiful! The elegance of the architecture, the heavy columns, the intricate stonework, the statues of saints. It feels like we're on the grounds of an ancient castle! The Cam River winds ... read more

I'm sitting by the window in a small Italian diner on a corner near Leicester Square. Watching the people go by, eating some delicious seafood pasta as the sun sets. I'm so content. I finally got a new cell phone today and a new contract! And I bought a mobile broadband device to hook up to my laptop, so I can have internet wherever I go! (That was another thing that confused the hell out of me when I was shopping for it.) What I did today: *Refused to be intimidated by the throngs of people in the Underground. *Took a bus tour of the City, sitting on top of the double-decker, taking tons of pictures. *London Eye *Boat tour on the Thames, from Waterloo Bridge to the Tower Bridge. *WALKED ACROSS THE TOWER BRIDGE! Oh ... read more

Oh. My. God. These are the ROWDIEST students I've ever seen in my life. I'm trying to establish rules, but they won't even sit down and shut up long enough to hear them. I can't put the whole class in detention. THEY WON'T LISTEN TO ME! They make fun of my accent, in a malicious way. Which doesn't hurt my feelings or anything, but when 4 kids mimic what I've just said, and they repeat it over and over, laughing and laughing, and everyone is laughing....it's hard for me to get the class back on track. It's just a big disruption. One girl said, "I'm going to have you sacked! Then you'll really cry!" Another said, "Why did you even come here? Why don't you just go back to America!" Plus half the kids don't know ... read more

On the bus today, I see a lady in a full burqa for the first time in my life. I'm fascinated. All I can see are her eyes. She digs around in her purse, and the cloth that covers her face hangs down, getting in the way. I wonder if she is sometimes annoyed that she has to wear the burqa. Then I think, maybe that’s all she knows, and maybe she feels it’s the right thing to do, so she doesn’t mind it. After all, this is the UK. It’s a free country, and lots of the Muslim women around here don’t wear the burqa. She has chosen to wear it, for whatever reason. I try not to let her notice me staring. She wears a tiny gold wedding band—another thing she has chosen to ... read more

Rather than hastily jumping into the lease on that fantastic room in St. Albans, I take the landlady's advice and "have a think on it." I don't know why I agree to think about it when I know for a fact that I'll be just as excited about tomorrow as I am right now. But the uncomfortable look on the landlady's face when I was like, "I'll take it!" makes me think that maybe I'm being too rash. So I hop the train into London with excitement soaking my spine. I sit by the window and watch the countryside and towns go by. I feel anxious to see my city. Oh London! I've been waiting to see you for so long, and now here I come! LONDON Apparently, I have to get off at Kentish Town, ... read more

I wake up at midnight and can't go back to sleep until 6 AM. So, yet again, I sleep until 11. AGAIN! I go across the street from the B&B to the convenience store to buy a paper. I look at the Luton newspaper and the paper for Hertfordshire right next to it. To hell with Luton, I think. I buy the Hertfordshire paper. The Indian man who works there, never smiles and speaks unintelligible English knows I'm apartment hunting. He loudly retorts, "This paper is not for Luton!" I look straight at him and simply say, "I know." He just looks at me. I look right back at him, offering no more explanation about my purchase. It's none of his damn business. He rings up the paper. As I walk out, I hope it's the ... read more

I need a phone! I arrive at the mall at 10 AM sharp to have my cell phone unlocked and practically shove it down the guy's throat, I'm so desperate for a phone. He tells me to come back in an hour. So I wander around the mall and buy some shampoo for curly hair and a straightening iron. (Hey, I'm a woman! I love wonderous variety!) I return impatiently to the cell phone stand, and the guy hooks up my phone to some computer and types in some codes or something. Ten minutes pass, and I can see something is going wrong, as the guy looks confused and keeps trying different things. It doesn't work. Baffled, he says, "I don't know why it's not unlocking." He calls another guy over, and they turn my ... read more

I'm still on Nashville time, taking naps and sleeping accordingly. In the morning, I'm going to get up at 7:30 and force myself to get on local time! I was up all night last night, finally falling asleep at 6:30 AM, which is 12:30 AM in Nashville. I slept until 11 and jumped out of bed, aggravated with myself for wasting time. Almost immediately, there was a frantic knock at my door. Wiping the sleep from my eyes and straightening my hair, I cracked the door. It was the lady from the cafe downstairs, who said something so fast and with such a thick accent, I couldn't understand her. After asking her to repeat it 3 times, I learned that my school had called Dave, the B&B owner, looking for me. (I had given my B&B ... read more

I'M FINALLY IN ENGLAND!! The flight from Nashville was good, though 7 hours long. I sat beside an old man with the most lovely British accent and kind, smiling eyes. He was funny in that British-humor sort of way. We chatted quite a bit about England and the States. He was now a resident of some obscure state like Wyoming. When night fell, he moved to the empty row in front of us so I could lie down across the seats. He joked, "It's been quite some time since I slept next to a young lady." The combination of his voice, his eyes, and his accent was so hypnotizing, I thought that if he was younger... I slept for probably 4 hours. Upon waking up, I saw on the plane's TV monitor that we were over ... read more
