We woke up around 7:30, fairly rested, and headed out for our day of beach and rock sightseeing. As usual, we stopped at the first coffee place we found, Cafe Rock, a drive-thru espresso shack. I ordered a cappuccino and Manoli a coffee, and unfortunately I forgot that cappuccinos made by hand aren't sweet. I sipped my super strong cappuccino for a while until we found a gas station. Just outside Port Orford we pulled over for some photos, then continued on to Meyers beach. It looked really cool, but was pretty foggy like yesterday, so we continued on, planning on returning later, hopefully when the fog lifted. Our next stop, Arch Rock, was even worse, so we continued stopping at other viewpoints, then turned back to have lunch at Gold Beach. On our way back, ... read more

We left the KOA fairly early, since we needed to drive over 6 hours, plus we wanted to stop several places along the way. Our first stop was in Tillamook to see their creamery and hopefully get some fresh ice cream. I knew the factory didn't open until 10am, but from what I'd read they had a store/cafe that opened at 5am. Well, we found the factory where they give tours and it was only 9am, but we never found the store, so no ice cream. From here we headed South along the Oregon coastline, looking the interesting overviews and such that we'd read about. We didn't find any for over an hour, the Three Arches (I think), but the tide was low, so it was so impressive. All along the way South, we looked for ... read more

We woke up this morning and took our time getting going, since we had reservations for the Columbia Gorge stern-wheeler cruise, from Portland Spirit in Cascade Locks, at 11am, boarding at 10:45am. We had booked the cruise last night on the Portland Spirit website. The cost per person was $38, and the website said the trip went one way down the Columbia River, then the next trip would go the other way up the river, but we could stay onboard for both trips at no extra charge. Since we had some time to kill, we decided to travel west from the KOA to see what kind of view we could get of Mount Hood, one of the tallest mountains around. When we got off the interstate and headed down highway 35 South. We frequently spotted Mount ... read more

We left the KOA in Olympic Peninsula a little later than normal since we only had a 4 1/2 hour drive to Cascade Falls KOA. When we got near the bottom of the peninsula, Manoli noticed some nice views along the way, so we finally pulled into a combination gas station, hardware store and grocery store in Hood Canal. After buying a couple of coffees, we went across the street so Manoli could take some photos and collect some seashells. We continued on down towards Oregon and finally pulled off the interstate at Woodland to eat lunch. It took us a while to find a decent place to eat, but finally settled on Matt & Mandy's Family Diner, since it looked quaint and popular. The small dining room was covered with photos of veterans, from WWII ... read more

Thanks to the awesome little heater we had in the cabin, we both slept long and well last night, even though the temperature got pretty low. We left the KOA this morning on our way to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic Park. Manoli had decided that the trip to Hoh Rain Forest was just too long, at 2 1/2 hours one way, leaving little time later for anything else. We arrived at the Olympic Park Ranger station a little after 8am. After getting our bearings, we started the looong drive up to the Hurricane Ridge station, only 17 miles, but winding and slow. It was only about 9am when we got there and the store and snack bar didn't open until 10am .On the plus side, there was plenty of parking. We took a few photos from ... read more

Again, I apologize for being late in posting this, but this KOA's internet was up most of the time, but had extremely limited bandwidth last night. We left the Spokane KOA just before 8am, with no plans to stop anywhere along the way, except for lunch and gas, since the trip was over 6 and 1/2 hours. When we got to the Columbia River canyon, and saw they had an overlook, we couldn't resist. Such awesome views of the canyon, river, and the Ginkgo Petrified Forest on the other side. After stopping for some photos, we crossed the bridge over the river and continued on. The Google Map app had selected the best route to the Olympic KOA, having us go south of Seattle and just north of Tacoma, then up the Olympic Peninsula. I guess ... read more

Sorry for the delay in posting, but the KOA's WiFi was absolutely terrible. We left the KOA a bit later again, since we had less than 3 hours of driving. We got off the interstate at Petty Creek Road, yes, you heard me right, Petty, like my last name. Last night I'd discovered that there was a Petty Mountain, and Petty Creek Road, on our way to Spokane. We drove several miles down the road, hoping to see some sign telling us which mountain was Petty Mountain, but no such luck. We even went a few miles further, stopping to ask a couple of farmers about it. They weren't sure either, so we gave up, deciding we'd surely seen the mountain along the way. We got back on the interstate heading towards Lake Coeur d'Alene. We ... read more

We woke up late and since our reservation wasn't until noon, we left the KOA around 9am. Soon into the trip we entered the Flathead Indian Reservation, populated by the Salish Indian tribes. It was obvious we were on a reservation when many of the road signs had a very different looking language on them. See the photo of one sign. As we got close to our destination, Big Arm Marine, we got a view that was amazing, so I turned off onto the next roadside area and we walked way back up the road to get some photos. Soon after that, we made the sharp right turn onto the road where Big Arm Marine & Rentals were located. There is also a restaurant, a group of cabins, and a number of private homes along the ... read more

Day 6: This morning we were in no rush to leave because Manoli had to call Glacier National Park at 8am to see if we could get entry passes through the "lottery", first-come first-serve. Unfortunately, even though she was signed in by 8am, we didn't get them. Glacier National Park is part of the reason we planned on stopping at Missoula, to either spend a day at the park, or go there on our way to Spokane. We left the KOA and awesome Yellowstone behind and hit the road on our way to Missoula, about a 4-hour drive, with no special places to stop along the way. Since we already knew there was a WalMart near our destination, we didn't both stopping in Livingston or Bozeman. We did stop for gas and a coffee after we ... read more

We awoke a bit later than usual, around 7am, and headed out for our last trip to Yellowstone, stopping on the way there at our Sinclair station for some coffee. Not long after we ended the park, I spotted a buffalo not too far from the road, so I pulled over so we could take some photos. We continued on south to Old Faithful. I noticed today that the 20 to 30 mile drives from one main place to another through the park don't seem to take nearly as long. I guess that when you are not looking so closely at the scenery, even the slower speeds and frequent stops or slowdowns, the same amount of time passes more quickly. When we reached the Old Faithful, or Upper Geyser Basin turnoff, we fairly easily found a ... read more
